Start by checking what used power, then make targeted, reversible changes. Samsung’s support guidance does not establish the specific trigger or routine behind the original title, so the steps below are a practical diagnostic sequence—not a claim about one tested phone.
Find out what used battery overnight
Before changing settings, check the phone’s battery-use details. On many Galaxy models, open Settings > Battery and review the usage breakdown; menu names and layout can differ by model and software version. Samsung recommends checking app usage as part of troubleshooting rather than restricting apps blindly. Samsung’s battery-drain troubleshooting guidance describes several possible causes, not a diagnosis of any particular device.

- If one app stands out, check whether you used it recently and whether it needs to run or sync in the background.
- If usage is spread across apps or the phone remains active while idle, investigate signal conditions and background activity next.
- Compare what you see across more than one night if needed; a single night’s usage screen may not explain a recurring pattern.
Check signal and recent setup activity
A weak or unstable mobile signal can make a phone use more power as it maintains a connection. Samsung also notes that 5G can drain battery faster when a device connects across multiple networks. If overnight drain happens mainly in a location with poor 5G coverage, try a different available network mode as a temporary, reversible test, then compare results. This is not a universal recommendation to turn off 5G: the useful setting depends on coverage, carrier, model, and software.
Battery use can also rise during initial setup or after changes that trigger background activity. If the drain began after setting up the phone or making a substantial change, allow that activity to settle and inspect battery usage again before imposing broad restrictions. Restrict only apps that do not need background access
For an app you rarely use and do not rely on for timely updates, Samsung provides sleeping and deep sleeping controls. The available controls and path can vary; look under Settings > Battery for background usage limits or sleeping-app options.
- Sleeping apps have restricted background activity. This may delay notifications or other work that normally happens in the background.
- Deep sleeping apps do not run in the background and work only when you open them manually. Do not deep-sleep apps you need for messages, alarms, health monitoring, or timely sync.
Apply restrictions selectively, then check whether the overnight usage changes and whether the app still behaves as you need. Samsung explains these background controls in its Galaxy background-usage guidance.
Use Power saving mode when its tradeoffs are acceptable
Power saving mode reduces background activity and may disable high-power features such as Always On Display. Depending on the device and settings, it can also limit app behavior, sync, or notifications. Consider it when you can tolerate those restrictions; check important notifications and background tasks afterward rather than assuming everything will continue normally.

Galaxy Routines can run actions when specified conditions are met, but the available conditions, actions, and Settings path vary by model and software version. Samsung’s documentation describes the feature; it does not verify a universal overnight battery-saving recipe or reveal the exact routine implied by the title. Samsung’s Modes and Routines guidance explains the general capability.
To make your own routine, choose an overnight condition your phone actually supports, then select only an action you understand and can reverse. For example, you might use a supported time condition to enable Power saving mode, if that action is available on your device. Test whether it triggers at the expected time and whether it interferes with notifications or other tasks. Do not assume that a particular action or trigger exists on every Galaxy, and do not automate a network change unless you have checked its effect on calls and connectivity.

Consider battery condition if the pattern persists
Battery capacity declines gradually through repeated charging and discharging. Samsung describes the battery as a consumable component and says lost capacity cannot be restored. That fact alone does not show that a phone with overnight drain needs a replacement battery.
