Old computers and office equipment can contain reusable hard drives, but a listing is only a lead—not a guarantee. Check whether storage is actually present, identify the drive before connecting it, and treat any data on it as private. Here are six kinds of discarded equipment worth inspecting, plus a safe way to decide whether to keep, wipe, or recycle them.
Six kinds of equipment worth checking
These categories are clues, not promises: storage may be missing, inaccessible, damaged, or incompatible with your intended use. Inspect the unit and its documentation rather than assuming a drive is inside.

1. Desktop towers and old PCs
A desktop may contain a hard drive or another kind of storage, but its configuration depends on the machine and what a previous owner removed. The FTC advises consumers to erase a computer’s drive before disposal because it may contain sensitive personal information. Check the tower for an installed drive and note its model and connections before planning to reuse it. FTC guidance on disposing of old computers.

Laptops are another potential source of storage, though a drive may have been removed or replaced. The FTC recommends backing up personal information and erasing a computer’s drive before disposal; EPA says certified recyclers wipe laptops. If you are preparing your own laptop for erasure, the FTC lists an external USB drive as one possible backup option. Do not trust an unknown salvaged drive with sensitive backups. #1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
3. NAS boxes
A network-attached storage (NAS) enclosure is designed to hold drives, but it may be empty or use drives that are not suitable for your setup. Seagate documentation for its Personal Cloud NAS family describes a two-bay model supporting up to two 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch drives and a four-bay model supporting up to four. Those are specifications for that model family, not a rule for every NAS. Check the exact model’s manual and whether drives are installed. Seagate Personal Cloud NAS documentation.
4. DVR and NVR recorders
Digital video recorders (DVRs) and network video recorders (NVRs) may use drives built for continuous video recording. Seagate describes installing a surveillance drive in a DVR/NVR system, but a drive removed from a recorder may have device-specific settings or locks and may not work as ordinary PC storage. Look up the recorder and drive documentation before counting it as reusable. Seagate documentation.

5. Digital copiers
Some digital copiers store documents on an internal hard drive, including documents users may not realize remain available. That makes a discarded copier both a possible storage source and a privacy-sensitive device. The FTC’s business guide explains copier data security and secure handling: Digital Copier Data Security: A Guide for Businesses.
6. Servers and workstations
A server or workstation is worth checking for installed storage, but there is no fixed configuration to expect from a used unit. Drives may be absent, difficult to remove, or tied to a particular setup. Treat it like any other computer: inspect the actual hardware and do not assume its storage is usable or empty.

How to inspect a find without assuming the drive is usable
- Confirm a drive is present. Check the device itself and its model documentation. A case or enclosure does not prove that storage remains inside.
- Identify the drive. Record the model, form factor, interface, and visible condition. NAS and recorder designs vary, so confirm compatibility against the exact device documentation rather than guessing.
- Keep privacy first. If a drive contains someone else’s files, do not browse, copy, or share them. Prioritize secure handling and erasure or proper disposal.
- Make a keep, wipe, or recycle decision. Keep a drive only if it is present, accessible, and suitable for your intended use. If data can be securely erased and the hardware is appropriate, wipe it before reuse. If not, use a responsible electronics-recycling route.
Why deleting or formatting is not enough
Deleting files or reformatting a drive is not the same as secure overwriting. The FTC’s Digital Copier Data Security: A Guide for Businesses states: “Overwriting is different from deleting or reformatting.” The distinction matters when equipment may retain private files. Read the FTC copier data-security guide.

If a device is unwanted, unsuitable for reuse, or cannot be securely cleared, look for a certified electronics recycler. EPA identifies R2 and e-Stewards as accredited standards and recommends certified electronics recycling. Ask the specific recycler whether it accepts the device and what data-erasure process it uses; a collection location should not be assumed to wipe every drive. EPA certified electronics recyclers.

Follow local disposal rules. EPA notes that older electronics can contain hazardous substances and points consumers to reuse and recycling options, local waste-management offices, household hazardous-waste facilities, and manufacturer or retailer collection programs. Do not put unwanted electronics in ordinary trash. EPA electronics donation and recycling options.
HHS also describes clearing, purging, or destroying media as ways covered entities may address final disposition of electronic protected health information. Those requirements apply to covered entities and ePHI; they are not a blanket legal rule for every person who finds a used drive. HHS HIPAA security guidance.
