How to Delete (or Edit) a Filter in Gmail

Learn how to edit or delete a Gmail filter from Filters and Blocked Addresses on a computer, and how to check filters that delete or skip mail.

To change or remove a Gmail filter, open the filter list in Gmail’s computer settings, choose Edit to change a rule or Delete to remove it. The steps below cover Gmail on a computer, which is the only platform Google’s filter instructions document.

Where Gmail stores your filters

Every filter you have created, whether to label mail, archive it, forward it, or send it to Trash, is listed in one place: the Filters and Blocked Addresses tab of Gmail’s settings. Google’s official filter guidance (Google Gmail Help, “Create rules to filter your emails”) describes this location for the computer version of Gmail. The mobile apps are not covered by that guidance, so if you are on a phone, use a computer or the Gmail website in a browser to manage filters.

How to edit a Gmail filter

Editing keeps the rule in place and lets you change its criteria or actions. Use this when a filter is mostly right but matches the wrong messages or does the wrong thing with them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Gmail in a web browser on your computer.
  2. At the top right, click the Settings gear, then choose See all settings.
  3. Select the Filters and Blocked Addresses tab.
  4. Find the filter you want to change and click Edit.
  5. Adjust the search criteria (for example, the sender, subject, or keywords) or the actions the filter performs.
  6. Click Continue, then click Update filter.

An edit does not take effect until you finish the last two steps. If you close the window after changing the criteria, the original rule stays as it was.

How to delete a Gmail filter

Deleting removes the rule entirely. Gmail will stop applying it to new incoming mail. Deletion does not reverse what the filter already did to messages that arrived while it was active, so check those separately if you are trying to recover mail.

  1. Open Gmail on a computer and go to Settings then See all settings.
  2. Select Filters and Blocked Addresses.
  3. Find the filter and click Delete.
  4. Confirm by clicking OK.

Edit or delete: which one to choose

  • Edit when the rule is still useful but its criteria or actions need changing.
  • Delete when you no longer want the rule to run at all.

Why expected messages are missing

Many people open this page because mail they expected is not showing up. Google’s troubleshooting guidance for missing messages (Google Gmail Help, “Gmail messages are missing – Computer”) points to two filter actions as the most common cause: Delete it and Skip Inbox. Before assuming mail has been lost, open each filter whose criteria match the missing messages and check whether it uses either action. If it does, edit the filter to remove that action or delete the filter, following the steps above.

Unfamiliar filters and forwarding

If you find a filter you do not remember creating, look at what it does. Google’s Gmail security guidance (Google Gmail Help, “Gmail security tips – Computer”) advises checking any filter that forwards messages to an address you do not recognise or that automatically deletes mail. If you did not create the filter, treat it as a possible sign that someone else has access to your account. Delete the filter, then review your account’s security settings and recent sign-in activity.

Filters are not the same as blocking a sender

Editing or deleting a filter is a separate task from blocking an address. Google’s guidance on blocking (Google Gmail Help, “Block an email address in Gmail – Computer”) says that mail from a blocked sender goes to Spam. Blocked addresses appear in the same Filters and Blocked Addresses tab, so it is easy to confuse the two. If your goal is to get a sender’s mail back into your Inbox, look for that sender under blocked addresses and unblock them there, rather than only deleting a filter.

Quick checklist

  • Use See all settings then Filters and Blocked Addresses on a computer.
  • To change a rule, click Edit, then Continue, then Update filter.
  • To remove a rule, click Delete, then OK.
  • For missing mail, check for Delete it and Skip Inbox actions first.
  • Investigate any forwarding or auto-deleting filter you did not create.

Google’s filter and blocking pages are the primary sources for the interface labels above. Interface wording can change over time, so if a label differs on your screen, look for the same option in the same settings tab.
