To get a website working when it says an ad blocker is active, turn off the blocker that is actually responsible. In Firefox that is either the built-in Enhanced Tracking Protection (ETP), which you can switch off for a single site, or an installed content-blocking extension, which you disable in Add-ons Manager. Check the built-in protection first, because it is the narrower change.
Work out which blocker is involved
A message such as “ad blocker detected” does not prove that an ad-blocking extension is installed. Firefox has its own protections, and other content-blocking extensions can also interfere with a page. Mozilla’s settings documentation distinguishes the two: Enhanced Tracking Protection is Firefox’s built-in feature that blocks known trackers, while optional content blockers are add-ons you install yourself. Because the two are separate controls, check both before changing anything.

Blocked trackers are not always harmless. Mozilla notes that blocked resources can sometimes stop a site’s images, video, login controls, or payment forms from working. That is the most common reason a page looks broken even when you have no ad blocker installed.
Option 1: Turn off ETP for one site
Use this first when the problem appears on one website and you have not installed a blocking extension.

- Open the page that is not working.
- Click the shield icon at the left end of the address bar.
- Turn Enhanced Tracking Protection off for this site.
- Reload the page.
This change applies only to the site you are on. Other websites keep their protection, so you do not need to disable ETP globally. If the page works, you can leave the change in place for that site or restore protection once you have finished with it. Mozilla’s Support article on ETP exceptions, last updated 2026-06-25, describes these site-level exceptions as a way to keep most protection while letting resources that a site needs load.
Option 2: Disable a content-blocking extension
If the site still reports blocking, or you know an extension is installed, disable that extension in Add-ons Manager.

- Click the Extensions button in the toolbar, which uses the puzzle-piece icon.
- Select Manage extensions.
- In Add-ons Manager, find the blocker you suspect.
- Click the blue toggle for that extension to switch it off. Mozilla’s Support article on managing extensions, updated 2026-08-27, uses this same wording: “Click the blue toggle for the extension you wish to disable.”
- Reload the page.
Many blockers also offer their own per-site allowlist or pause button in their toolbar menu. Those menus differ between extensions, so use the extension’s own controls when they exist. If none are available, disabling the extension in Add-ons Manager is the Firefox-level option, and it affects every site, not only the one that is broken.
Choosing the narrowest change

Start with the first row. Move down only if the site still fails after the narrower change.

If the site still does not work
Mozilla’s ETP guidance lists several follow-up steps when a page remains broken after a site-level change:
- Reload the page after each change, since a page may still show the old blocking state until it reloads.
- Try the same site in another browser. If it works there, the problem is most likely in your Firefox settings or extensions.
- Clear that site’s cookies and cache, then reload.
- Report the problem to Mozilla if the site is still broken and you believe the protection is at fault.
When you finish, restore any setting you changed that you no longer need. Turning ETP back on for the site, or re-enabling the extension, returns the protection you had before. Neither change is automatic, so check both controls after the site works.

Mozilla’s support pages describe these controls as they stand in 2026. Extension interfaces are maintained by their own developers, so labels inside a third-party blocker can change without notice.
