You cannot safely follow a universal root recipe for Samsung One UI 9 / Android 17: rootability depends on the exact Galaxy model, region, carrier variant, firmware build, and bootloader status. Magisk documents a general Samsung method, but that is not confirmation of a tested One UI 9 procedure for your phone. First verify that your specific device can have its bootloader unlocked; if it cannot, stop rather than trying firmware or files meant for another device.
Does One UI 9 on Android 17 mean your Galaxy can be rooted?
No. One UI 9 is based on Android 17, but the Android version alone does not determine whether a Samsung phone can be rooted. Bootloader-unlock eligibility varies by model and market, and carrier variants, firmware, and device lock state matter too.

Samsung announced the One UI 9 beta on May 12, 2026, initially for the Galaxy S26 series, and described it as based on Android 17. In its September 16, 2026 rollout announcement, Samsung said One UI 9 had already reached the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Z Fold8, and Z Flip8, with rollout starting on the Galaxy S26, S26+, and S26 Ultra. That staged availability does not establish eligibility for other Galaxy models. Google’s June 16, 2026 Android 17 announcement concerned supported Pixel devices and Android Open Source Project code; it does not establish Samsung root compatibility.
What to verify before downloading or patching anything
Write down the information for your own phone, not just its marketing name. A guide for a similarly named Galaxy can still be wrong for your variant.

- Identify the exact model number. Find it in the phone’s device information and record the complete model identifier.
- Record the sales region and carrier variant. Bootloader unlocking may be restricted by market or device configuration.
- Record the firmware build. Use the installed software information to capture the current build before seeking any device-specific instructions.
- Check Download Mode’s lock information. Magisk’s Samsung documentation directs users to inspect OEM Lock and KnoxGuard status. If an OEM Lock value is absent in Download Mode, Magisk says that can indicate the device cannot be unlocked in that market; do not treat absence as permission to proceed.
- Confirm device-specific compatibility. Do not flash a patched image or firmware package made for another phone, even if its model name looks the same.
If you cannot verify that your exact model and variant are unlockable on the installed firmware, do not proceed. The documented sources do not establish a safe, supported workaround for a locked One UI 9 bootloader.
What Magisk’s general Samsung method involves
Magisk’s official Samsung instructions describe a workflow for devices whose bootloader can be unlocked. In broad terms, it uses the phone’s own official firmware package: the AP file is patched in the Magisk app, then the patched package is flashed using desktop flashing software. These are general Samsung instructions, not a verified One UI 9 / Android 17 recipe for an unspecified Galaxy.

The method is device-specific. Do not substitute a patched AP file, boot image, or other firmware component from another phone. A procedure should match the exact model, region or carrier variant, and firmware build, and should include instructions for that device’s firmware-update process.

Your data
Magisk says initial Samsung installation requires a full data wipe and advises backing up first. Treat the phone’s contents as at risk before unlocking or flashing; do not begin unless you can restore what matters.

Knox Warranty Bit
Magisk’s Samsung guide warns: “Installing Magisk WILL trip your Knox Warranty Bit, this action is not reversible in any way.” The Knox Warranty Bit trip is irreversible, so returning to stock firmware does not undo that consequence.
Integrity checks and security
Samsung’s Knox documentation describes Knox Attestation as a way to assess whether a device has been rooted or is running unofficial firmware. Rooting can therefore affect device-integrity checks or services that rely on them. Samsung also explains that Secure Boot has each bootloader cryptographically verify the next one in the chain, with the root of trust resident in hardware. Modified boot components are security-sensitive, not interchangeable files.

Firmware updates
Magisk distinguishes initial Samsung installation from later firmware upgrades and warns that ordinary over-the-air updates may not preserve root. A device-specific guide needs to explain how updates and any required re-rooting work for that phone and build; do not assume an update is safe to apply with a modified setup.
What if Download Mode shows KnoxGuard “Prenormal”?
Magisk’s documentation includes a conditional KnoxGuard troubleshooting note mentioning 168 hours of uptime. This is not a universal bootloader-unlock waiting period or a guarantee that a phone will become unlockable after that time. Check the exact status and device-specific guidance rather than relying on the number as a general rule.

When to stop
- Your exact model, region, or carrier variant does not have a confirmed unlock path.
- Download Mode indicates a locked state, or the relevant OEM Lock information is missing and unlock eligibility is unclear.
- The instructions or patched files target a different model or firmware build.
- You cannot accept a full data wipe, an irreversible Knox Warranty Bit trip, or possible effects on integrity checks and updates.
The consulted Samsung, Google, and Magisk materials establish One UI 9’s Android 17 basis, general Samsung Magisk prerequisites, and relevant Knox consequences. They do not provide a verified root success rate, a count of rootable One UI 9 models, or a tested firmware-specific procedure for an unspecified Galaxy. Until an exact-device guide confirms compatibility, the responsible answer to “how do I root it?” is to verify eligibility first and not flash.
