Google Assistant routines—managed through Google Home and Assistant—combine starters and actions for personal tasks and shared smart-home automation. The practical choice depends on whether you want to change how your phone behaves, run an assistant workflow, or coordinate compatible home devices.
How the two routine systems differ
| What you want to compare | Samsung Modes and Routines | Google Assistant routines |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Automates behavior on a Galaxy phone. | Automates personal assistant tasks and shared household tasks. |
| Basic setup | Choose conditions and actions; Samsung offers recommended routines as well as customization. | Add at least one starter and one action. Available choices depend on the routine type and setup. |
| Typical uses | Phone behavior for situations such as commuting, leaving work, or preparing for sleep. | Spoken workflows, timed tasks, information or media actions, and control of compatible smart-home devices. |
| Smart-home focus | Samsung’s reviewed guide focuses on Galaxy phone behavior and does not establish a complete cross-device compatibility list. | Household routines can automate compatible connected devices, subject to setup and feature availability. |
| Personal information | The reviewed Samsung guide does not define a comparable personal-versus-household routine system. | Personal routines can use personal results such as calendar events and reminders; household routines cannot provide an individual member’s calendar events or reminders. |
What Samsung Modes and Routines does
Samsung describes Galaxy Routines as a way to make a phone run configured actions when specified conditions occur. Its examples include routines for commuting, leaving work, and preparing for sleep. You can start with a recommended routine and customize its conditions and actions. Samsung’s guide is an example of the feature, not a definitive list of every trigger and action supported across all Galaxy models.

Where to find it
In Samsung’s UK guidance, Android 13 and 14 place the feature at Settings > Modes and Routines. On Android 11 and 12, Samsung says routines are provided through the Bixby Routines app. Menu names, paths, and screen layouts can vary by model, software version, and app version, so use the path that appears on your device. See Samsung’s Galaxy Routines guide.

Google routines use starters to begin an automation and actions to say what happens next. Depending on the routine, possible starters include a voice command, a time, sunrise or sunset, dismissing an alarm, device activity, presence sensing, or a manual start. Actions can include controlling home devices, playing or controlling media, providing information or reminders, communicating or making announcements, adjusting Assistant volume, or carrying out a command that works with Assistant.

Those options are conditional, not universal: Google says available starters and actions depend on routine type, connected devices, settings, and other limitations. For some time, sunrise or sunset, and home-arrival or departure starters, an address is required; some starters also need a compatible device. Google’s Android routine help describes the setup and limitations.
Personal routines and household routines are different
A personal routine is for an individual and can return that person’s results, such as calendar events and reminders. A household routine automates shared devices in a Google Home and is visible in the home’s history to its members; it cannot provide an individual member’s personal calendar events or reminders. That distinction matters if an automation should be shared with a household rather than tied to one person’s private information.

Smart-home automation depends on compatibility
Google documents Assistant control for lights, switches, outlets, and thermostats, and its routine guidance also discusses examples involving plugs, motion sensors, doorbells, and presence sensing. These are examples, not a promise that every device can serve as a starter or respond to every action. Check the particular device and routine options available in your home. Google’s smart-home control guide explains supported device categories and setup.

Can both systems be used on a Galaxy phone?
Yes. Samsung says Google Assistant is supported on Galaxy phones and tablets running Android 5.0 or higher. Its support page also notes that seamless action across apps is not supported. Using both systems does not mean they automatically share triggers or actions; configure each routine in its own system. See Samsung’s Google Assistant guide for Galaxy devices.

Do not rely on routines for critical safety
Google explicitly describes routines as a convenience feature, not for safety- or security-critical use cases. An automation should not be the sole safeguard for an emergency, a security risk, or another outcome that must happen reliably.
