For Patagonia’s current Men’s Down Sweater, the instructions are to machine wash cold, avoid bleach, tumble dry low, do not iron, and use two tennis balls for best drying results. Patagonia also recommends a cleaner made for down and drying the jacket completely before storing it.
Before you wash: check the label and prepare the jacket
Patagonia’s Men’s Down Sweater instructions are a useful example, not a universal label for every Patagonia down garment. Follow the care label sewn into your own jacket if it differs. Patagonia’s product-care hub links to garment care and repair guidance.

- Use a cleaner specifically made for down, following its bottle directions. Patagonia explains that ordinary detergent may remove down’s natural oils or leave residue; its guide names Nikwax Down Wash as one effective option, not the only one. See Patagonia’s down-jacket washing guide.
- When available, choose a front-loading washer. Patagonia’s 2011 guide says top-loader agitation may snag or damage lightweight shells. It allows a gentle top-loader for some lighter garments but urges extra caution with thick jackets and parkas.
- For especially dirty cuffs or the neck, spot-treat with a fabric stain remover before washing, and follow that product’s instructions.
How to machine-wash a Patagonia down jacket
- Place the jacket in the washer and select a cold machine wash, as specified for the current Men’s Down Sweater.
- Add the down-specific cleaner in the amount directed on its packaging. Do not use bleach or fabric softener.
- After the wash, consider an extra rinse or soap-free wash to help clear residue. Patagonia’s detailed 2011 guide suggests this, but it is an optional thorough-rinse step, not a universal label requirement.
Patagonia’s current Men’s Down Sweater product page lists its model-specific care instructions as: “Machine Wash Cold, Do Not Bleach, Tumble Dry Low, Do Not Iron, For Best Results Dry With 2 Tennis Balls.”

Use a dryer when the care label permits
Tumble dry on low heat if that matches your jacket’s label. Add two clean tennis balls; Patagonia recommends them for best results on the current Men’s Down Sweater. The balls help break up down clumps as the jacket dries. Drying can take multiple cycles, so periodically take the jacket out and gently separate clumps by hand.

If you need to air-dry
Patagonia’s older guide describes air-drying as possible when a dryer is unsuitable, but slow and labor-intensive. Depending on humidity, it says air drying may take from a couple of days to more than a week. Check the jacket periodically and separate clumps by hand as it dries. Do not pack or store it until it is completely dry: down may feel dry before it is, and damp packed down can develop mildew.
What to avoid
- Do not bleach the Men’s Down Sweater; its current care instructions explicitly say not to.
- Do not use fabric softener, which Patagonia advises against in its down-care guidance.
- Do not dry-clean the jacket, according to Patagonia’s down-care guide.
- Do not iron the Men’s Down Sweater; its current product instructions say not to.
Repair small damage separately
If a feather sticks out but the shell has no hole, do not pull the feather out. Patagonia says to work it back into the garment. For a small shell hole, its small-hole repair guide recommends fabric repair tape, including Gear Aid Tenacious Tape or Patagonia’s Worn Wear Patch Kit; let the patch set for 24 hours before washing. For larger damage, contact Patagonia’s repair service rather than treating tape as a structural repair.
