Usually, yes—but installing updates alone does not guarantee offline access. For a digital game, load its virtual game card onto your Switch 2 before going offline. A game may still need internet access for its own online features or to verify a Nintendo Switch Online membership.
How offline access works on Switch 2
For a digital purchase, Nintendo’s key distinction is whether its virtual game card is loaded on the console or the game is being launched through an online license check.

Virtual game card loaded
Nintendo says a game or DLC whose virtual game card is loaded onto a console can be played without an internet connection. Other users on that console can also play it. This covers the license setup, not a game’s separate online requirements. Nintendo’s Virtual Game Card Guide explains how the feature works.

Online License used instead
Online License is a different way to access a purchased digital download when its virtual game card is not loaded. Nintendo describes this mode as allowing play while the system is connected to the internet; an active connection is required for the license check. See Nintendo’s instructions for enabling or disabling the Online License setting.

What to expect with each kind of game
| Access method | Offline expectation | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Digital purchase, virtual game card loaded | Can be played offline if the software itself does not require internet access. | Check whether the game or feature depends on online services or membership verification. |
| Digital purchase, Online License used and virtual game card not loaded | Expect an internet connection for the license check. | Load the virtual game card before disconnecting if you want to rely on offline access. |
| Physical game card | Insert the card to start the software, but the card does not guarantee that every game or feature works offline. | Check the game’s own online requirements. |
| Game or feature that checks Nintendo Switch Online membership | A membership verification may require an internet connection. | Check the specific game or feature’s requirements. |
Nintendo’s troubleshooting guidance includes inserting a physical game card as a way to start software, but online-dependent requirements still apply. Its guidance for the “Unable to connect to the Internet” message notes that some software may need an internet connection to play or to verify a Nintendo Switch Online membership.
Prepare a digital game before going offline
- While connected to the internet, load the game’s virtual game card onto the Switch 2 using Nintendo’s virtual game card controls.
- Start the game while online before you travel or lose connectivity. This is a practical check that the game launches with the license setup you plan to use.
- Check the game’s own requirements for online play or membership verification. An update does not remove a requirement imposed by the title or its services.
Does installing updates make a game playable offline?
Not by itself. Updates may install game data, but offline access also depends on how the digital license is being accessed and whether the title needs online services. Nintendo does not provide a title-by-title offline compatibility list in the cited guidance, so check the specific game’s requirements rather than assuming every updated Switch 2 game works without a connection.
