Samsung Galaxy Routines can change supported phone settings or run supported actions when chosen conditions are met. For example, a routine might turn on Wi-Fi and mute notification sounds at work, or lower screen brightness at bedtime. The options available depend on your Galaxy model, software and app versions, settings, and permissions; Routines are not an unrestricted way to automate any action in any app.
How Galaxy Modes and Routines work
A routine pairs a condition with one or more actions. In the editor, the condition is configured under If and the action under Then. Once saved, it runs when its configured condition is met. Samsung’s custom-routine instructions describe adding a trigger, choosing an action, and saving; recommended routines can also be customized.

Modes are activity or context profiles, such as a focus setup, while Routines are condition-and-action automations. A mode may start automatically when its conditions are met or be started manually. It can apply options such as Do not disturb or restrict app use. Routines can also be run automatically or manually; Samsung documents Home-screen widgets and assistant controls for some workflows. Labels and controls vary by device and software.

Samsung’s examples illustrate the kinds of changes available, but they are not a complete inventory of every trigger and action on every Galaxy device.

- Connectivity and context: turn on Wi-Fi when arriving at work. Samsung’s One UI 5 guidance also lists Airplane mode and Mobile Hotspot as possible routine conditions for that software generation.
- Sound and notifications: mute notification sounds for work. The One UI 5 examples include adjusting left/right sound balance as an action.
- Display and focus: lower screen brightness at bedtime, or use a mode to enable Do not disturb or restrict app usage.
- Apps and assistant commands: Samsung’s One UI 5 guide gives opening an app pair as an example. On specified newer software, a routine can use the Ask Bixby action to execute commands.
- Conditional logic: Samsung’s One UI 7 feature page describes If-Else logic and getting data as variables. This indicates more complex branching is supported in that software context, but does not establish a universal list of compatible devices or actions.
The examples are version-scoped: an action or condition documented for one One UI generation should not be assumed to appear on every Galaxy phone or tablet.
What limits a routine
The options depend on the device and software
Samsung says availability may vary by device and software version. Its New Zealand guidance, updated March 16, 2026, also cautions that menus, paths, and layouts can vary by model, software version, or app version. Some support materials still use the older “Bixby Routines” name; newer instructions call the feature “Modes and Routines.”

Automation is limited to offered triggers and actions
The routine editor presents available conditions and actions, with additional options within some of them. It is not a general automation API for arbitrary actions in third-party apps. Samsung does not provide a single complete, current action matrix covering every device and software version, so check whether the trigger and action you want actually appear in your phone’s editor.
Settings and power management can affect operation
Required permissions, app state, connectivity, and other settings can matter. Samsung’s Gulf support guidance, updated June 24, 2026, advises checking battery settings because power-saving modes may restrict routines or modes. That is a troubleshooting possibility, not a claim that every power-saving mode disables every routine.

Some related Bixby features have changed
Samsung says Bixby Quick Commands is no longer available on Galaxy S25 and later running One UI 7.0 with Bixby 3.0; it identifies the Ask Bixby action within Routines as an alternative. This is a specific software boundary, not evidence that Galaxy Routines themselves were removed.
How to create a routine
- Open Settings → Modes and Routines → Routines. On some software versions the feature may instead appear in the Bixby Routines app.
- Add a routine, then tap the sentence under If and choose an available condition or trigger.
- Choose what should happen under Then, selecting an action available on your device.
- Save the routine. Review any additional options shown for its condition or action.
Samsung’s Android-version guidance says features previously in the Bixby Routines app are under Settings → Modes and Routines on Android 14 and 13, while Android 12 and 11 use the Bixby Routines app. This guidance is specific to those versions; menus can differ across models, regions, and app releases.

Why a routine may not behave as expected
- It did not start: confirm that the selected condition occurred as configured and that the desired trigger is available on your software version.
- An action is missing: inspect the Then action list on that device; Samsung’s examples do not guarantee that the same action exists across models or versions.
- Battery settings may be involved: check whether power-saving settings could be restricting routines or modes.
- The phone changed unexpectedly: inspect running routines and their configured conditions and actions. Samsung says you can check a routine notification, the Routines app, or an active mode in the Now bar.
To check what your phone is actually doing, use Samsung’s instructions for checking running routines. The available menu and status indicators may differ by device and software.

How to judge whether your Galaxy can do a specific task
Before building a routine, check the device itself rather than relying on a list written for another Galaxy or One UI release:

- Does the editor offer the condition you need?
- Does its Then list include the action you want?
- If you need branching or variables, are those controls present in your software?
- Can the routine access the relevant setting or app, and are connectivity and battery settings compatible with the behavior?
- Are you looking for a Mode—a profile—or a Routine that responds to conditions with actions?
Samsung’s public guidance does not establish exact feature parity across Galaxy S, Z, A, tablet, or regional variants. Availability should be verified on the particular device.
