Samsung’s documented option for an extra access barrier is Secure Folder, a separate protected space for apps—not a confirmed password lock for individual conversations in Samsung Messages. The right choice depends on whether you want protection for messages in transit, less visible threads, or an extra barrier on the device.
What the lock icon means in Google Messages
Google Messages uses a lock icon to indicate that end-to-end encryption is active for an eligible RCS conversation. Google says RCS chats between Google Messages users are automatically upgraded to end-to-end encryption. When active, a lock appears on the send button and beside message timestamps. That icon is an encryption status indicator, not a control for hiding a conversation or requiring a password to open it. Google Messages Help: end-to-end encryption

When encryption applies
Both participants must use Google Messages with RCS enabled. RCS requires a data or Wi-Fi connection. SMS and MMS messages are not end-to-end encrypted, and a conversation may fall back to SMS if RCS or connectivity is unavailable. Check the indicator in the conversation rather than assuming that every message sent through Google Messages is encrypted. Google Messages Help: end-to-end encryption
Can you hide or password-lock a Google Messages conversation?
Google Messages lets you archive a conversation. Archiving removes it from the home screen, but the conversation remains readable; sending a new message to it returns it to the home screen. Treat archive as a way to clear the main list, not as a password lock or a substitute for encryption. The cited archive instructions do not describe a password-protected chat feature. What Samsung Messages offers for privacy
Samsung’s support guidance describes lock-screen notification controls for Galaxy Messages, including showing or hiding notification content while the phone is locked. This changes what is visible in notifications; it does not encrypt the message transport or add a separate password to a conversation. Samsung’s cited guidance documents notification controls and Secure Folder, but does not document a per-chat password lock in Samsung Messages. Menu labels and features may differ by device, software version, and region. Samsung Support: how to use the Messages app
Secure Folder is a separate protected space
Samsung Secure Folder can contain apps and data behind a folder lock. Samsung describes protection with a PIN, password, pattern, or supported fingerprint, and says the Secure Folder shortcut can be hidden. Availability varies by device and software version. It is a device-level container, not evidence of a built-in lock for selected threads in the ordinary Samsung Messages app. Samsung’s guidance does not establish that putting a messaging app in Secure Folder preserves all of its notifications, backups, or messaging behavior unchanged. How Google Messages and Samsung Messages compare
| Privacy question | Google Messages | Samsung Messages and Galaxy controls |
|---|---|---|
| Is message content end-to-end encrypted? | Eligible RCS chats between Google Messages users are encrypted when both people have RCS enabled; the lock icon indicates active encryption. SMS/MMS is not end-to-end encrypted. Google Messages Help | Samsung Messages may use RCS, including Google-provided RCS in some cases. RCS alone does not establish that a particular conversation is end-to-end encrypted; check the actual conversation and its encryption indicator where available. Google Messages Help: RCS |
| Can you remove a thread from the main list? | Yes. Archive removes it from the home screen but leaves it readable. The cited archive guidance does not document a password lock. Google Messages Help | The cited Samsung guidance documents notification controls and Secure Folder, not a native per-thread password lock. Samsung Support |
| Can you add another access barrier on the device? | The cited Google Messages guidance discusses Android backup and app permissions as access considerations; it does not document a per-conversation password lock. Google Messages Help | Secure Folder can protect apps placed inside the separate folder with a supported lock method. Availability varies by device and software version. Samsung Support |
| Can notifications reveal message content? | Apps granted SMS or notification permissions may access received messages, according to Google’s encryption guidance. Google Messages Help | Galaxy Messages guidance includes settings to show or hide content on the lock screen. Samsung Support |
| Does RCS work the same everywhere? | RCS may be provided by Google or a mobile carrier; availability and settings depend on the service and device. Google Messages Help: RCS | RCS availability depends on device, software, region, carrier, and provider. Samsung Messages may connect to Google’s RCS service. Google Messages Help: RCS |
RCS does not automatically mean encrypted
RCS is a messaging standard, not a guarantee that every RCS chat has end-to-end encryption. Google says RCS can be supplied by a carrier or by Google, and messaging apps that support RCS—including Samsung Messages—may connect to Google’s RCS service. On most Samsung devices, Google gives this route to RCS settings: Samsung Messages → Menu → Settings → RCS chats settings. Labels and availability can vary. For Google Messages, rely on the lock indicator in the conversation to confirm whether encryption is active. Google Messages Help: RCS
Privacy beyond encryption: backups, permissions, and spam checks
End-to-end encryption protects eligible messages as they travel between participants; it does not by itself settle who can access content on an unlocked phone, through backups, or through permissions. Google says received end-to-end encrypted messages are included in Android backup and that apps granted SMS or notification permissions can access received messages. Consider those paths separately when reviewing your phone’s privacy settings. Google Messages Help: end-to-end encryption

Google says Messages does not use message content for advertising, while noting that some features, such as spam detection, require additional data. Google’s spam guidance says filtering can use on-device machine-learning models, may check message URLs by uploading them for malicious-link review, and may ephemerally process unencrypted message content for spam detection and model improvement. That description concerns unencrypted content; it should not be generalized into a claim that Google reads the contents of end-to-end encrypted RCS chats. Which option fits your privacy goal?
- You want protection while messages travel: Use an eligible Google Messages RCS conversation and verify the lock icon. SMS/MMS is not end-to-end encrypted.
- You want a thread out of the main list: Archive it in Google Messages, understanding that it remains readable and can return to the home screen when you message it.
- You want an extra barrier before opening an app: Check whether Secure Folder is available on your Samsung device and whether its separate protected space fits your needs. Do not mistake it for a confirmed per-chat lock in Samsung Messages.
- You want message previews hidden on the lock screen: Review notification-content settings for your messaging app; those settings affect previews, not encryption.
Check the feature on your phone
- For Google Messages encryption: Open the conversation and check for the lock on the send button or beside message timestamps. If it is absent, do not assume the message is end-to-end encrypted.
- For Samsung RCS settings: Open Samsung Messages and go to Menu → Settings → RCS chats settings, if that option is available on your device.
- For Secure Folder: Search your Samsung device’s settings or app list for Secure Folder, then check which lock methods and app options your software version supports.
- For notification previews: Review the messaging app’s notification settings and Android lock-screen notification settings; wording and paths vary across devices.
Samsung Messages availability, RCS providers, menu names, and Secure Folder support can vary by country, carrier, device, app release, and software version. Verify the settings shown on your own phone.
