If a computer or tablet asks for the network security key when joining your Samsung Galaxy hotspot, enter the hotspot’s Wi-Fi password. You can find or change it in the phone’s Mobile Hotspot settings. It is not automatically your screen-lock code or the password for another Wi-Fi network.
What is the network security key for a Samsung hotspot?
It is the password configured for your Galaxy phone’s Mobile Hotspot. The prompt may say “network security key” instead of “Wi-Fi password,” but it is asking for the credential that lets the other device join the phone’s hotspot.

There is no single password shared by all Samsung phones. Use the password shown in the settings for your own hotspot. Android’s hotspot and tethering instructions explain that you connect another device by selecting the phone’s hotspot and entering its password.
Where do I find the key on my Galaxy phone?
- On the Galaxy phone, open Settings > Connections > Mobile Hotspot and Tethering > Mobile Hotspot.
- Read the password in the hotspot settings. If it is hidden, use the on-screen control to reveal it.
- If you do not know the current password, change it in the hotspot settings and use the new password when connecting. Devices that saved the old password may need their saved hotspot connection updated.
Samsung’s Galaxy Mobile Hotspot setup guide, updated June 9, 2026, describes configuring hotspot settings, including the password. Menu wording and available options can differ by model, software version, and market. If the path does not match your phone, search Settings for “Mobile Hotspot” or check the manual for your model.

What key do I enter when my computer asks for one?
On the computer, tablet, or other joining device, select your Galaxy hotspot’s network name from the Wi-Fi list and enter the password shown in the phone’s Mobile Hotspot settings. Check that the network name is the one broadcast by your phone; do not substitute your phone’s screen-lock code or another network’s password.
Some supported Galaxy screens also let you share the hotspot using a QR code. Samsung Canada notes that someone who obtains the code may be able to determine the network password, so share it only with people you intend to connect. See Samsung Canada’s connection guidance.

What if the key is rejected or the hotspot will not connect?
- Confirm the network: Make sure the joining device selected your phone’s hotspot, not a nearby Wi-Fi network with a similar name.
- Check the current password: Read it again in the phone’s hotspot settings. If you changed it, remove or update the saved connection on the joining device and enter the new one.
- Check hotspot availability: If Mobile Hotspot is missing or will not activate, the menu may differ on your model or software, and your carrier may require a tethering plan. Google’s Android hotspot guidance notes that carrier support can affect tethering.
Should I use a password or an open hotspot?
Keep password protection enabled so unintended users cannot join. Samsung Business Insights recommends keeping a password rather than setting the hotspot to “open” in its 2022 Galaxy hotspot guidance. Samsung says WPA2 is available on supported devices and advises considering WPA3 as support becomes more widespread; the security modes offered depend on the Galaxy model and software. Choose a mode supported by both your phone and the device connecting to it.

Samsung’s setup material lists 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz options on supported devices. A 2.4 GHz connection may work with a broader range of devices, while 5 GHz is another option when both the phone and joining device support it. The best choice depends on the devices and the surrounding wireless environment; not every Galaxy offers the same options.
