Parental control software is a broad category of software and settings that helps a parent or caregiver set boundaries around a child’s digital activity. Depending on the device or service, it may limit screen time, restrict content or purchases, show information about app or website use, or manage who can communicate with a child. No single feature set is standard across all tools.
What does parental control software do?
Controls generally help families manage one or more parts of a child’s online life. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes them as a way to reinforce good habits and create safer online spaces for children to learn and play. The controls available vary by product, device, app, and account.

- Screen time: Set time limits or schedules for device or app use.
- Content access: Restrict certain websites, apps, or kinds of content.
- Activity information: View some information about websites visited or apps used.
- Communications: Limit or manage who a child can contact, where supported.
- Purchases: Restrict or require approval for some purchases.
These are possible functions, not a promise that any particular tool includes all of them or can see every activity.
Where do parental controls come from?
Built-in device, app, and platform settings
Operating systems, apps, and online platforms may include controls within their own settings. The available options can differ across services and may apply only to that device, app, platform, or account.

- Ultra-fast WiFi Speed – RT-AX1800S supports 1024-QAM for dramatically faster wireless connections
- Increase Capacity and Efficiency – Supporting not only MU-MIMO but also OFDMA technique to efficiently allocate channels, communicate with multiple devices simultaneously
- 5 Gigabit ports – One Gigabit WAN port and four Gigabit LAN ports, 10X faster than 100–Base T Ethernet.
- Commercial-grade Security Anywhere – Protect your home network with AiProtection Classic, powered by Trend Micro. And when away from home, ASUS Instant Guard gives you a one-click secure VPN.
Third-party software and services
Separate services may offer controls or monitoring across supported devices and accounts. Their reach depends on what devices and services they support and what access is configured; “cross-device” does not mean universal coverage.
Network-level controls
Some routers, networks, or internet providers offer ways to restrict access on a particular network. Unlike a setting tied to a child’s device, a network control may not apply when the device connects elsewhere, such as on mobile data or another Wi-Fi network.

- A New Way to WiFi: Deco Mesh technology gives you a better WiFi experience in all directions with faster WiFi speeds and strong WiFi signal to cover your whole home.
- Better Coverage than traditional WiFi routers: Deco S4 2 units work seamlessly to create a WiFi mesh network that can cover homes up to 3,800 sq. ft. No Dead Zone anymore.
- Seamless and Stable WiFi Mesh: Rather than wifi range extender that need multiple network names and passwords, Deco S4 allows you to enjoy seamless roaming throughout the house, with a single network name and password.
- Incredibly fast 3× 3 6Stream AC1900 speeds makes the deco capable of providing connectivity for up to 75 devices.
- With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds
How should a family decide what kind of control to use?
Start with the devices and accounts the child actually uses, then identify the boundary the family wants to set. The FTC’s guide recommends choosing based on those devices and the boundaries the family has decided on—not on a broad claim that one tool is “best.”
- For a time limit, check whether the relevant device or app can set schedules or usage limits.
- For website or content restrictions, check what types of content and which browsers or apps the control covers.
- For communication or purchase limits, confirm that the specific service supports the relevant contacts or transactions.
- For activity reports, understand which activity is visible, who can see it, and what data the service collects.
Questions such as “What are the best parental controls for blocking websites?” have no universal answer: the right option depends on the child’s devices, the sites or content in question, and the family’s boundaries.

Can children disable or get around parental controls?
Some controls can be circumvented, and keeping them configured across devices and services can be difficult. Common Sense Media notes that controls can create a false sense of security if families assume they prevent every unwanted interaction or reveal all activity. Treat them as one layer of support, not a guarantee of safety or a substitute for checking how the settings work in practice.

Monitoring can expose information about a child’s activity, so families should consider what is collected, how it is used, and who can access it. UNICEF’s report on children’s rights in the digital environment discusses how parental controls can support children while also raising questions about privacy, data security, trust, and the development of independent digital judgment. That context does not establish that every current product handles data poorly; it does make transparency and age-appropriate expectations important.

Controls work best alongside conversations about why a boundary exists and how to make sound choices online. They can support a child’s learning and safety, but cannot replace communication or the gradual development of judgment.
