First check which step source Samsung Health is showing: open Steps > More options > Select step data to show, then choose All steps or inspect the phone and watch separately. If a device’s own count is missing, troubleshoot how it detects movement; if the watch has a count but the phone does not, check syncing.
Check whether steps are missing or just hidden by the selected source
Samsung Health can show steps from one device or combine readings from a phone, Galaxy Watch, and other connected devices. The phone and watch count independently before Samsung Health combines their totals, so selecting a single source can make the displayed number look incomplete. Samsung also notes that step counts are estimates, not exact manual tallies. Samsung’s step-count guidance explains the source selection and estimate.

- Open Samsung Health on your phone and tap Steps.
- Tap More options (the three-dot menu), then Select step data to show.
- Choose All steps for the combined total. To diagnose a problem, select the phone or watch individually and check whether that source has recorded steps.
If the menu wording differs, Samsung’s options can vary by device, software, and region; check the support page or manual for your model.

Carry the phone during the walk and give it a reasonable stretch of movement before judging the result. Samsung describes the count as an estimate affected by movement and where the phone is carried. Its regional support guidance says a phone or tablet may record steps in a pocket, purse, backpack, or hand, but placement and model can affect what it detects. Samsung India’s step-count guidance provides more detail.

- Update Samsung Health and the phone’s software, then try another walk.
Samsung does not provide a universal accuracy percentage for step counts, so a small difference from a manual count is not by itself proof of a fault.
If your Galaxy Watch is not counting steps
Allow for the watch’s detection behavior before treating a slow display as a failure. Samsung says some watches may need 10 continuous steps before the count starts updating, and the on-screen number may lag. The watch may also miss steps when your arm stays still, such as while pushing a cart or lawn mower. Walk naturally and let your arms move rather than holding your wrist up to watch the display. Samsung’s watch step-count troubleshooting describes these behaviors.

Run Samsung’s step-count check
- Walk continuously for 50 steps on a straight path, with a natural gait and normal arm movement.
- Check whether the watch recognizes the walk. Do not judge it from only a few steps or from walking with your arm still.
- If it still does not recognize the steps correctly after this check, Samsung advises contacting service.
If the watch counts steps but the phone does not show them
This points to a transfer or display issue rather than a lack of watch detection. Samsung recommends checking that Samsung Health synchronization is enabled and using Sync now, then verifying the Bluetooth connection in Galaxy Wearable. Also check that the watch is not in Power saving, Airplane, or Watch only mode, which can restrict syncing. Follow Samsung’s Galaxy Watch sync guidance for the applicable settings.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Samsung Health and run its available sync action.
- In Galaxy Wearable, confirm the watch is connected over Bluetooth.
- Turn off Power saving, Airplane, or Watch only mode if enabled, then sync again.
A watch initially configured without a phone may keep recent activity only on the watch. Back up your data before resetting the watch; a reset should not be the first troubleshooting step.

When permissions or software-version guidance applies
Samsung has a separate notice for sync or restore symptoms after Samsung Health 7.0 that points to missing permissions, including privacy consent and location settings. That guidance is specific to those 7.0 sync/restore situations; it is not a universal fix for a phone or watch that is not counting steps. See Samsung’s Samsung Health 7.0 sync and restore notice if that description matches your issue.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to contact Samsung service
If the watch fails Samsung’s 50-step check, contact Samsung support or service for your model. Samsung’s cited guidance recommends service after a failed check; it does not specify a part or a do-it-yourself sensor repair procedure. For a phone that still records no steps after carrying it, updating the app and software, and checking the source view, use Samsung support for the exact device and regional menu labels.
