How to Choose an All-in-One Printer for Your Print Habits

These five all-in-one printer examples serve different needs, from low upfront cost to refillable color ink and monochrome documents. Compare supplies and features before buying.

There is no single cheapest all-in-one printer for every household: a low checkout price can come with higher ink costs, while a refillable tank or monochrome laser may make more sense for frequent printing. These five US-market examples match different priorities rather than forming a universal ranking. Compare what you print, how often you print it, and whether you need an automatic document feeder before choosing.

How to choose an all-in-one printer

Start with your typical jobs and printing frequency. Cartridge inkjets are an entry point for color printing, refillable tanks target people who print color more often, and monochrome lasers suit document-heavy households that do not need color. The printer’s purchase price is only part of the cost: ink or toner, and in some cases a separately replaced drum, add to ownership costs.

  • For occasional color: weigh the initial price against cartridge replacement frequency.
  • For frequent color: compare refillable-tank models, but check the yield claim for the exact model rather than assuming a family-wide maximum applies.
  • For mostly text: consider monochrome laser and include both toner and drum in the cost calculation.
  • For scanning or copying: check for an automatic document feeder (ADF) if you handle multi-page originals. An ADF is separate from automatic duplex printing, which prints on both sides of a sheet.

Wireless printing, paper capacity, number of input trays, print speed, and expected monthly volume can also determine whether a low-cost model fits your workflow.

Best for Example Why it fits Tradeoff or detail to verify
Low-upfront cartridge inkjet Brother MFC-J1360DW RTINGS names it its “Best Budget All-In-One Printer” and describes it as a wireless color inkjet with an ADF. RTINGS reports about 400 black-and-white and 300 color pages per standard cartridge; high-yield options can roughly double those figures. Those page counts are RTINGS review estimates, not guaranteed yield for every user’s coverage or settings. Check replacement-cartridge cost and local availability. RTINGS, 2026.
Cheap entry option, if currently available Canon PIXMA MG3620 RTINGS includes it under “Best Cheap All-In-One Printer,” making it a candidate to investigate when purchase price is the priority. The available comparison does not establish a full current specification or cost comparison. Confirm current availability, exact variant, and whether its features meet your needs before buying. RTINGS, 2026.
Frequent color printing with refillable ink Canon MegaTank PIXMA G3290 Tom’s Guide describes print, scan, and copy functions, duplex printing, Wi-Fi, and estimates color printing at about 0.9 cents per page, compared with its stated 1.9-cent category average. Those per-page figures are Tom’s Guide editorial estimates, not a universal or independently guaranteed cost. The model has one tray and no ADF, so it may be less convenient for multi-page scan or copy jobs. Tom’s Guide, 2026.
Black-and-white documents Brother MFC-L2820DW RTINGS reports a print speed of 33 pages per minute and recommends considering it for monochrome documents or to avoid potential inkjet clogs. RTINGS reports just under 1,300 prints from a regular toner cartridge; the XL cartridge has an advertised yield of 3,000 pages. These speed and yield figures are from RTINGS’ 2026 review, and actual results may vary. Factor in the separately replaced drum. This is not a color-photo solution. RTINGS, 2026.
Home use with a published cost comparison HP ENVY 6555e Consumer Reports’ 2026 Buying Guide lists an approximate retail price of $110 and estimated annual ink cost of $261, offering a useful example of why checkout price alone can mislead. Consumer Reports says its overall score combines test results with survey data on predicted reliability and owner satisfaction. Its annual ink or toner estimate draws on testing and member-reported printing habits; the listed price is approximate retail, not a live offer. Individual costs vary. Consumer Reports, 2026.

When a refillable tank may be worth considering

Tank printers are aimed at people who expect to print color regularly and want to reduce dependence on small cartridges. Epson’s US EcoTank category page advertises up to 6,600 color pages and 5,500 black pages. Those are Epson’s family-level maximum claims, not tested yields for every EcoTank model; check the specifications for the exact printer before using them to estimate costs. Epson US, product-category page accessed October 7, 2026.

Low-volume users should also consider periods of inactivity: RTINGS notes potential printhead-clog concerns when discussing an EcoTank alternative. If you print rarely, compare that practical consideration with the cost and convenience of other printer types rather than assuming a tank is automatically the economical choice. RTINGS, 2026.

What the cost figures can—and cannot—tell you

Consumer Reports’ 2026 guide lists the HP ENVY 6555e at $110 approximate retail with $261 estimated annual ink cost, and the Brother MFC-J1010DW at $100 approximate retail with $77 estimated annual ink cost. The guide’s price is approximate, not live; its annual supply estimate is based on testing and how members reported they print. Consumer Reports also combines test results with survey data on predicted reliability and owner satisfaction for its overall score. These figures are category- and methodology-dependent context, not a personal forecast. Consumer Reports, 2026 Buying Guide and methodology.

Use those estimates as a prompt to calculate your own likely use: consider pages per month, how much of each page is covered with ink, color versus black printing, replacement-supply prices, and whether you will use high-yield supplies. A manufacturer’s advertised yield, a reviewer’s page-cost estimate, and an annual cost estimate based on member habits answer different questions; do not treat them as interchangeable.

Check these details before you buy

  1. Confirm the exact model and region. Similar model names and suffixes can refer to different regional versions or features. Check the retailer listing against the manufacturer’s specification page.
  2. Match the scanner to your workflow. Look for an ADF if you scan or copy multiple pages. Check duplex scanning separately if you need both sides of originals scanned automatically.
  3. Check paper handling. Verify input-tray count and capacity, supported paper sizes, and automatic duplex printing if you routinely print two-sided documents.
  4. Estimate supply cost for your volume. Check compatible ink or toner for the exact model, and include any separately replaceable drum where applicable.
  5. Check connectivity and workload fit. Confirm wireless or mobile-printing support, print speed, and the stated monthly volume against how you plan to use the device.

For broader category guidance, HP positions DeskJet models for budget and light-volume use, ENVY for versatile home use and occasional photos, and Smart Tank for higher-volume printing. Those are family-level positioning statements, not a substitute for checking an individual model’s features and running costs. HP, 2026 home-printer guide.
