Check for a known Microsoft incident before changing settings, use Quick Repair first, and move to Online Repair or reinstall only if needed. These steps cover Windows Microsoft 365 Apps and Office 2016–2024; Mac repair steps are outside this guide.
1. Give the update time to finish, then restart Windows
If Office says it is busy or an update or repair appears to be running, wait a few minutes and try the app again. If it still will not open, restart Windows once and retry. This is a low-impact first check; it does not establish that the update caused the launch problem.

Before broader repairs, look at Microsoft’s live list of recent Office installation or activation issues. Match the listed app, platform, version or update channel, and exact error wording to your situation. Microsoft labels issues with statuses such as fixed, resolved, or workaround; follow a workaround only when it applies to your setup.

3. Run Quick Repair
Quick Repair is the first built-in repair to try. Microsoft describes it as the faster option: it detects and replaces corrupted files. The repair may apply to the full Office suite even if only one app is failing.
- In Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Find your Office installation, open its menu, and choose Modify. In Windows 10, the equivalent list is commonly under Apps & Features.
- Choose Quick Repair when the repair options appear, then follow the prompts.
- When the repair finishes, try opening the app again.
Menu names and available repair choices can vary by Windows version and Office installation type. Microsoft’s steps are in Error code 30029-4 when trying to uninstall Office.

4. Escalate to Online Repair
If Quick Repair does not solve the problem, repeat the Office Modify process and choose Online Repair instead. Microsoft describes this as the fuller repair; it requires an active internet connection and can repair the suite when just one app fails. Let it complete, then test the app.

5. Check Office and Windows update access
If any Office app opens
In an Office app, go to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now to check for Office updates. Microsoft’s instructions are at How to update Microsoft 365 or Office for Windows.
If Update Options are missing
Update controls may be absent on a volume-license installation or because an organization manages updates. On a work or school PC, contact your IT or help desk instead of trying to override a managed policy.

Do not treat KB5002907 as a general fix
Microsoft’s KB5002907 notice describes an optional update with narrow eligibility: Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows PCs more than 90 days out of date on Current Channel or Monthly Enterprise Channel. It does not apply to other channels or operating systems, and it does not change devices managed through Group Policy or Cloud Update. The notice says Microsoft paused the rollout to prevent additional devices from being affected, and reports that some Office 2016 or Office 2019 devices were left without functioning versions after the update’s repair action. That report does not show that the same incident caused your failure; check the live notice for its current status and applicability rather than installing the optional update broadly.
6. Uninstall and reinstall Office if repair fails
If neither repair option restores the apps, uninstall Office using Microsoft’s troubleshooter for the same Windows PC, then reinstall the licensed product. Microsoft says the troubleshooter requires Windows 10 or later and currently cannot uninstall Office 2024. The cited guidance says the Office applications are removed, not user-created documents, but confirm important files are backed up or synced before a major repair.

If network, proxy, firewall, or antivirus issues block reinstalling, Microsoft says the Microsoft 365 offline installer may help bypass those installation obstacles. If only Outlook will not open
For classic Outlook, first test whether an add-in is involved by starting Outlook in safe mode with Outlook /safe. If it opens, disable COM add-ins, then enable them one at a time to identify the problem add-in. Microsoft’s diagnostic guidance at Outlook crashes or stops responding applies to classic Outlook, not new Outlook for Windows.
Do not remove an Outlook profile casually: Microsoft warns that doing so also removes associated data files. If you are unsure whether those files are backed up or stored on the server, skip profile removal.
