There is no proven universal winner. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S12+ is the more straightforward choice if you want a stylus included and Samsung’s three-app split-screen workflow. The current iPad Air gives you a choice of 11-inch or 13-inch models and supports Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C), but Apple’s cited compatibility page does not say a Pencil is included. For students, the deciding factors are usually required apps, preferred screen size, handwriting needs, ecosystem, and the complete local cost—not an unverified performance or battery comparison.
Which tablet should a student choose?
- Choose the Galaxy Tab S12+ if you want a large screen, an S Pen included according to Samsung, and a workflow that can place up to three supported apps on screen at once.
- Choose the iPad Air if you prefer iPadOS, want to choose between 11-inch and 13-inch sizes, or need to use Apple Pencil Pro or Apple Pencil (USB-C).
- Pause before choosing either if your school requires specific exam, learning-management, note-taking, or creative software. Confirm that each essential app works on the exact model and operating system you plan to buy.
These are workflow-based recommendations, not the result of a controlled student test. The available product information comes from Samsung and Apple; it does not establish that one tablet is faster, lasts longer in real classes, or produces better academic results than the other.

Which is better for taking notes and studying?
Galaxy Tab S12+: more included for handwriting and split-screen study
Samsung says the S Pen comes with the Tab S12+ and describes using it for note-taking, highlighting, and sketching in Samsung Notes or other creativity apps. That makes the out-of-box handwriting setup simpler on the information cited here: you do not need to add a separately listed compatible Pencil just to have a stylus. Samsung’s Multi Window can put as many as three apps in separate screen sections, which may suit a lecture video, notes, and reference material at once. App support matters, so test the layout with your own tools rather than assuming every app will fit it.
Samsung also describes Note Assist features for formatting, spell checking, translation, and summarization. The cited Notes operation is limited to 200–4,000 characters and requires a Samsung account and internet connection; some AI feature terms can differ. Treat these as specific tools with stated conditions, not as unrestricted or universally free services. Samsung’s student information describes the features and qualifications.

iPad Air: choose screen size and Pencil compatibility
Apple’s two sizes give students a choice between the more compact 11-inch model and the larger 13-inch model. Apple lists compatibility with Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C), so check which Pencil fits your intended use and budget. The cited Apple page confirms compatibility, not inclusion. Apple’s specifications list the models and compatible Pencil options.
For either tablet, the most important study-app question is practical: can you open your course platform, annotate the documents your instructors provide, and use any required exam or proctoring app on that device? The product pages cited here do not compare school software libraries or verify compatibility with a particular institution’s systems.

What should students compare before paying?
- List required apps. Check your school’s learning-management system, exam and proctoring tools, note app, and any discipline-specific software against the exact tablet model and OS. Do not rely only on general Android or iPadOS availability.
- Decide on screen size. The Tab S12+ is 12.6 inches; iPad Air comes in 11-inch and 13-inch versions. Consider whether you value a larger canvas for reading and handwriting or a smaller device to carry between classes.
- Price the full handwriting setup. Samsung says the S Pen is included. Apple lists Pencil compatibility but does not say a Pencil is bundled on the cited page. Compare the tablet plus the stylus you actually need, rather than tablet-only prices.
- Check local configurations and stock. Price, student discounts, storage, cellular options, availability, and box contents vary by market and date. Apple’s cited education-store examples are from India: the listing viewed showed ₹83,900 for a 128GB Wi-Fi configuration, with higher prices for other storage or cellular configurations. Those are regional examples accessed in 2026, not universal or current prices elsewhere. Apple India education store.
- Match the ecosystem you already use. The cited product information identifies Android 17/One UI 9 for Samsung and iPadOS for Apple. Consider where your files, accounts, and other devices already work best, then verify any school-specific requirements.
Does Samsung’s performance or battery claim prove it is better?
No. Samsung compares the S12 series processor with the previous-generation Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra and claims up to 61% faster NPU processing, 19% faster CPU performance, and 17% improved GPU power. Those are Samsung’s comparisons against its predecessor, not iPad Air benchmark results, so they do not show that the S12+ is faster than the iPad Air. Samsung’s announcement states the comparison.
Likewise, Samsung’s up-to-21-hour figure and Apple’s up-to-10-hour Wi-Fi web browsing or video claim are not evidence from a shared test. Neither figure guarantees a full day of classes for an individual student.
Which one is the better value?
The sources do not support a universal price winner. The cited Apple education-store prices are specific to India, while Samsung pricing, regional student offers, and current availability depend on location and date. A fair comparison is the cost of the exact storage and connectivity configuration you need, plus any required stylus and accessories, after checking local education pricing and what is in each box. Do not compare an India education price with a Samsung price from another market as if they were equivalent.

Recommendation by student type
- Handwritten notes on a budget: Start with the Galaxy Tab S12+ if the included S Pen and Samsung’s described notes workflow meet your needs. Confirm the local tablet price and the apps you need.
- Student who wants size options: Consider iPad Air if choosing between 11 inches and 13 inches is valuable, and include a compatible Apple Pencil in your cost calculation if handwriting is essential.
- Student who studies across multiple apps: The S12+ has Samsung’s explicit three-section Multi Window description, but your apps must support it. Verify the actual course workflow before treating it as a deciding advantage.
- Student with institution-specific software: Buy only after confirming the required app or exam system runs on the precise model and OS. Neither manufacturer comparison establishes compatibility for every school.
