For a Coinbase.com account, start by adding a passkey or security key in your 2-step verification settings, keep a backup way to sign in, secure the email account tied to Coinbase, and enable the Address Book allowlist. Coinbase.com holds newly allowlisted addresses for 48 hours before they can receive a send. The steps and timing below are specifically for Coinbase.com; Coinbase Exchange and Coinbase International Exchange have separate instructions.
1. Strengthen sign-in and keep a recovery path
Coinbase recommends a security key or passkey for 2-step verification and advises having multiple methods available. In Coinbase’s 2-step verification setup guidance, it recommends two security keys for a high-security combination, or a passkey plus a security key as a convenient combination with a backup.

Sign in to Coinbase.com and open your Security or 2-step verification settings. Add a passkey or security key, then confirm that you can access the backup method you intend to rely on. If you choose a hardware key, check that it works with the browsers and devices you use to sign in. Store a spare security key somewhere secure, separate from your everyday key.

Coinbase says passkeys are generated on your device and are not shared or stored on a server. Your ability to use one depends on being able to access it through the device or passkey provider where it is saved, so plan for a lost or replaced device. A security key is a physical authentication device; two keys reduce the risk that losing one will lock you out.

Authenticator apps, push notifications, and SMS
Coinbase also supports time-based one-time password (TOTP) authenticator apps, including Duo, Google Authenticator, and Microsoft Authenticator, as well as push notifications and SMS. Coinbase describes SMS as its least secure 2-step method. An authenticator app can be a useful alternative or backup, but make sure you understand how you would restore access if you lose the phone or app that generates its codes.
2. Secure the email account, password, and devices around Coinbase
- Use a unique password. Choose a strong Coinbase password that you do not reuse elsewhere; a password manager can help you create and store it.
- Protect your linked email. Turn on 2-step verification for that account, review its recovery addresses and phone numbers, authorized devices, and forwarding rules. Email access can affect the security of other accounts, including Coinbase.
- Review Coinbase access. Check active sessions and authorized apps or devices, and revoke anything you do not recognize. Coinbase’s account-security guidance recommends changing both your Coinbase and email passwords if you notice an unrecognized sign-in.
- Lock down the mobile app. Coinbase documents a PIN or biometric lock, such as Touch ID or Face ID, for its mobile app. This is an extra local safeguard, not a replacement for account-level 2-step verification.
- Avoid impersonation scams. Coinbase’s account-security help guidance states: “Coinbase employees will never ask for your password.” Do not give anyone your password, 2-step verification code, email access, remote control of your device, or money in response to an unsolicited call or message. Reach Coinbase through a bookmark or its official help center rather than a phone number or social-media account sent to you.
3. Enable the Coinbase.com Address Book allowlist
Coinbase.com allowlisting restricts crypto sends to addresses saved in your Address Book. It can limit where an intruder can send funds if they gain account access, but it cannot prevent every loss—for example, if you are tricked into approving a transfer or your email or device is compromised.

- Sign in to Coinbase.com.
- Open your profile settings, choose Settings, then select Allow list.
- Turn on allowlisting and complete the prompts. Coinbase requires access to your 2-step verification method to activate, deactivate, and use the feature.
- Add the destination address with its relevant currency and details. Before saving, independently verify the address, asset, and network; an incorrect destination or network can make a transfer difficult or impossible to recover.
- Wait for the activation hold to expire before sending to a newly added address.
Coinbase says a newly added Coinbase.com allowlist address becomes available after 48 hours. Turning off allowlisting also takes 48 hours, except Coinbase says the hold does not apply when it is turned off within 8 hours of activation. These are Coinbase.com operational rules, not a general timing guarantee for other Coinbase services. Allowlisting also does not change Coinbase’s separate eligibility rules for Account Protection: Coinbase says reimbursement, where available, is limited to eligible Coinbase One subscribers in supported regions and is subject to requirements and exclusions, as described in its Account Protection Overview.
4. Use the instructions for the Coinbase service you actually use
Coinbase.com, Coinbase Exchange, and Coinbase International Exchange are distinct services. Do not assume that a menu path, feature availability, or address activation delay for one applies to another.

- Coinbase.com: Follow the Address Book allowlist steps above. Coinbase’s help page specifies a 48-hour wait for newly added addresses.
- Coinbase Exchange: Coinbase has separate Address Book and crypto withdrawal address whitelisting instructions. Coinbase says those features are available through Exchange, not Coinbase.com or the Coinbase app.
- Coinbase International Exchange: Its allowlist documentation surfaced a 24-hour address activation period. That timing is separate from Coinbase.com’s 48-hour rule; consult the documentation for the exact International Exchange service you use.
