Update X.Org Server through your Linux distribution’s supported package manager and official repositories, then follow that distribution’s security advisory and restart instructions. There is no single update command or universal package version: distributions can ship different versions and backport fixes.

Why there is no universal X.Org update command

X.Org is not updated as one single, all-at-once desktop release. Its components are maintained as independently released modules, each with its own version number. The upstream xorg-server version is more useful than an umbrella X11 release label, but it is not necessarily the version string your distribution uses for its package. See the X.Org release notes and X.Org versioning guide.

Distribution maintainers may backport a fix without changing their package string to match the upstream version. For example, Ubuntu’s security notice lists package versions separately for each affected Ubuntu release. Check the notice for your exact distribution and release rather than treating an upstream version comparison as proof that your installed package is vulnerable or fixed: Ubuntu security notices.

Safe update procedure

  1. Identify your distribution and release. Use that release’s official package documentation and security notices; package names, commands, and supported update procedures differ.
  2. Check the relevant X.Org or X server advisory. Confirm the affected package and the fixed package version for your release. Use your distribution’s interpretation of its package version, including any backported fixes.
  3. Update from supported repositories. Use the distribution’s normal package manager and trusted repositories, not an untrusted repository or a third-party X.Org module. X.Org cautions that loadable modules run with server privileges; its X11R7.7 release notes state: “The Xorg server runs with root privileges, so the Xorg server loadable modules also run with these privileges.”
  4. Keep local configuration in view. If you maintain a custom /etc/X11/xorg.conf or files under /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d, note those changes and consult the relevant driver documentation if behavior changes. Many users do not need a main configuration file, but custom configuration snippets are available when needed; see the xorg.conf manual.
  5. Follow the distribution’s restart guidance. Some updates may require restarting the graphical session or rebooting. Do not assume one rule applies everywhere: Ubuntu’s cited notice directs users to reboot after the standard system update so all necessary changes take effect.
  6. Check the desktop after the update. Verify the graphical session, display arrangement, input devices, and any essential accelerated graphics use. If something fails, consult your distribution’s logs and the documentation for the graphics driver in use.

Security version context as of October 7, 2026

X.Org’s security advisory index lists July 8, 2026 issues affecting X.Org X server versions earlier than 21.1.24 and Xwayland versions earlier than 24.1.13; it lists xorg-server 21.1.24 and Xwayland 24.1.13 as fixed. Those are upstream thresholds, not universal package-version requirements for Linux distributions. Follow the advisory and fixed-package guidance for your installed distribution and release.

The July 8 index entry names CVE-2026-55999 and CVE-2026-56000. For details about their impact and affected configurations, read the linked individual advisories rather than inferring more from the index entry alone.

When not to build X.Org from source

Compiling X.Org Server yourself is not the normal desktop update path. It leaves you responsible for matching the server to the rest of your distribution’s X.Org modules, graphics drivers, and package maintenance. The X.Org documentation describes modules as individually released and directs builders to track module update announcements as needed; that is a specialized maintenance model, not a substitute for the supported package update route for an ordinary desktop installation.
