To update most Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets, open Settings > Software update (some versions use System updates), then choose Download and install, Check for system updates, or the equivalent label. Follow the prompts until the device restarts. If the update is not offered on the phone, Samsung Smart Switch can sometimes install it from a Windows PC or Mac over USB.
Update availability and support are model-, market-, software-version-, and carrier-specific. Samsung’s current policy says eligible devices may receive up to seven years of security updates; that is not a universal promise for every Galaxy model or every kind of update.

How do I update my Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet?
The on-device route is the normal method. Exact wording differs between Galaxy models, Android/One UI versions and carriers, but the controls are found in the software-update section of Settings.
- Connect to a reliable Wi-Fi network if your carrier or model requires Wi-Fi for a large download.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Software update. On some devices the menu is called System updates.
- Choose Download and install, Check for system updates, or Check for software updates.
- Read the version and size shown, then start the download and installation.
- Complete every on-screen prompt. Some devices install more than one update cycle, so repeat the check if the phone asks you to.
Samsung’s US and UK support instructions recommend Wi-Fi and an adequately charged battery. Samsung does not publish one battery percentage that applies to every model, so follow the warning or charging instruction shown on your device rather than relying on a universal threshold.

During installation the phone is unavailable, including for calls, and files cannot be accessed. Leave it connected to power when practical, do not force a restart, and wait for the process to finish. The device may reboot one or more times.
Check the installed version
To see what is already installed, open Settings > About phone (or About tablet) > Software information. Record the Android version, One UI version and build number before troubleshooting. Those details help Samsung or a carrier identify the correct package.
Automatic downloads
Some Galaxy models offer an automatic-download or automatic-update option in the same Software update area. Availability and the exact switch name vary. Enabling it does not bypass a carrier’s release schedule; it only lets the device obtain an update after that release is made available to your model and region.

Yes. Samsung Smart Switch can present an Update button when a compatible update is available for the connected Galaxy device. The computer method is useful when an on-device download repeatedly fails or when the phone has limited connectivity.

- Install and open Samsung Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac.
- Connect the Galaxy phone or tablet with a USB cable that supports data transfer. The cable supplied with the device may be used; try an existing data cable before buying anything.
- Unlock the device and approve any USB or trust prompt.
- When Smart Switch detects an available firmware update, select Update.
- Read the information, start the update and follow every instruction in Smart Switch and on the device.
- Do not unplug the cable, close Smart Switch or use the phone until the process reports completion. The Galaxy may restart.
Smart Switch is an alternative delivery route, not a guarantee that a delayed carrier release will appear there. If no update is offered in Smart Switch, the same model, market and carrier restrictions may still apply.
Why is my Samsung update not showing up?
A missing update does not by itself prove that the phone is unsupported. Samsung and carriers release software by exact model and market, sometimes in waves. Work through these checks in order.
- Confirm the current software. Use Settings > About phone/tablet > Software information and compare the build with the release information for your exact model.
- Check the carrier schedule. For an unlocked phone originally sold for a particular carrier, Samsung says the original carrier may handle updates. A phone can therefore wait for that carrier even after another network has begun distribution.
- Use Wi-Fi. Some carriers require Wi-Fi before allowing a large package to download.
- Try the original-carrier SIM when applicable. Samsung notes that a SIM from the phone’s original carrier may be required in some cases after the device has been SIM-unlocked.
- Allow for a staged rollout. A new release may reach only part of the eligible population at first. Check again later instead of assuming exclusion. Samsung does not provide one universal rollout deadline.
- Try Smart Switch. Connect by USB and check whether Smart Switch offers an update. Some carriers also provide their own update utility.
Availability can also differ by country, network provider, product variant and software version. Use the support information for the exact model and carrier rather than a release date reported for a different region.

Not enough storage
If the phone says there is insufficient space, remove or move enough data to meet the amount shown on screen. Large videos, offline media and unused apps are common space consumers. Do not guess at a required amount; use the figure supplied by the updater.
Download stopped or is incomplete
Samsung says an interrupted download may be resumable from the notification. Reconnect to stable Wi-Fi, open the update notification and choose the resume option if shown. Keep the device charged while the package is retrieved.
Repeated download errors
Try Samsung Smart Switch on a computer using a USB data connection. This can bypass a damaged or repeatedly interrupted on-device download, but it still follows model and carrier eligibility.

A failed installation may recover and retry. If the Galaxy cannot boot normally after the update fails, Samsung’s support guidance says service is required to reflash the device. Contact Samsung or an authorized service provider and describe the exact error and build number.

Do not make a factory reset your first response. Recovery or reset actions can erase personal data. Samsung recommends backing up before a factory data reset, and a reset should be considered only when support instructions for your exact situation call for it.
What should I do about bugs after a successful update?
First verify that the installation actually completed and check Settings > Software update for a later patch. Review the release notes for the exact model and consult Samsung Members or Samsung support for documented issues and workarounds.
Official support material does not establish that a particular Galaxy update causes a specific symptom, nor does it publish a general failure or bug rate. Battery drain, heat, app crashes or connectivity changes can have multiple causes, so do not assume the update is solely responsible without model-specific evidence.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before any reset or service appointment:
- Back up photos, messages, authentication data and other important files.
- Record the software build, app version and the time the symptom began.
- Install available app updates from the relevant app store.
- Check whether a later Samsung patch is available.
- Use Samsung Members diagnostics or support channels for device-specific guidance.
How long will my Galaxy get software updates?
There is no single answer for the Galaxy range. Separate operating-system upgrades (new Android and One UI generations) from security updates (patches addressing security vulnerabilities). A model can receive security patches after its major OS-upgrade commitment ends.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. | Samsung statement | What it covers | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung Mobile Security policy, as of January 2024 | Security updates for eligible Galaxy devices | Up to seven years; eligibility, timing and availability vary by model, market and network provider. |
| Galaxy S24 series announcement | OS upgrades and security updates | Seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates for the S24 series described in that announcement; timing and availability vary by device and market. |
| Samsung 2022 announcement for select devices | OS upgrades and security updates | Four generations of OS upgrades and up to five years of security updates for the eligible devices covered by that announcement. |
These are policy maxima or commitments for the named eligible groups, not a measurement across every Galaxy phone. Launch generation, exact model code, country and carrier can change both the end date and the cadence.
How to compare two Galaxy models
Do not compare phones using one “years of updates” number. Check all four dimensions:
- Number of promised OS-upgrade generations.
- Security-update duration.
- Security cadence while supported, such as monthly, quarterly or another schedule listed for that model.
- Whether release timing or eligibility changes by market, network provider or exact model variant.
Samsung’s Mobile Security policy page and the support information for your carrier and model are the authoritative places to verify a specific phone’s status. A general “up to seven years” statement cannot establish an end date for an individual device.
What to prepare before installing an update
- Back up important data. Updates are designed to preserve data, but backup protects you if recovery or service becomes necessary.
- Free storage proactively. Leave room for both the downloaded package and temporary installation files.
- Use dependable Wi-Fi and power. A stable connection reduces interrupted downloads, while adequate charge avoids installation pauses.
- Plan for downtime. Calls, apps and files are unavailable during installation.
- Keep account and support details. Note the model number, carrier, software build and any error code before contacting support.
When should you contact Samsung or your carrier?
Contact the carrier when the release is absent only on that network, when an original-carrier SIM appears to be required, or when the carrier’s schedule is unclear. Contact Samsung when Smart Switch and on-device checks fail, when you need model-specific release information, or when the phone cannot boot after an unsuccessful installation. Provide the exact model, country, carrier, current build, update attempt date and displayed error. That information distinguishes a normal staged rollout from a failed installation.
Key takeaways
Use Settings > Software update and the equivalent download-and-install command for routine updates. Smart Switch provides a USB computer route when the phone’s download fails, but it does not override carrier or regional eligibility. Missing updates commonly reflect staged distribution, carrier control, Wi-Fi requirements or an original-carrier SIM condition. For failures, free the storage requested, resume incomplete downloads, then try Smart Switch; a Galaxy that will not boot normally needs service rather than an improvised reset. Finally, treat support life as model-specific: Samsung’s headline figures range from the earlier four-OS/up-to-five-security commitment for select devices to seven OS generations and seven security years for the S24 series, while the broader security policy says eligible devices may receive up to seven years.
