The whitelist then allows joins only from the listed accounts.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Unturned servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Use the file method for a persistent friends-only setup or bulk changes. If an administrator is online, Permit and Permits can manage the permitted list at runtime. Whitelisting controls who may join; it does not by itself make the server visible or reachable over the Internet.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat the Unturned whitelist does
Unturned’s whitelist is an allow-list for joining the server. When the server is configured as whitelisted, an account must be present in the permitted-player list to connect. Everyone else is refused, even if they know the server name or connection address.
Two files have different jobs:
Commands.datcontains startup commands. The lineWhitelistedturns on restricted joining.Whitelist.datcontains the SteamID64 value for every account allowed to join.
Keep those roles separate. Adding an ID to Whitelist.dat without enabling Whitelisted does not activate the restriction, while enabling the command without adding IDs leaves no ordinary player permitted.

Before you edit anything
Stop the correct server cleanly
Shut down the server before changing its configuration. Most settings are read at startup and cannot be configured reliably while the server is open. A clean stop also prevents the running process from overwriting your edits when it exits.
Identify the active server profile
Unturned stores each server profile beneath a path in the form U3DSServers<ServerName>Server. The name in that path must be the profile that your launcher or service actually starts. If you operate several worlds or profiles, changing a similarly named folder will have no effect on the live server.
Prepare the permitted accounts
Collect the SteamID64 for every player who should be allowed in. The value must be the account’s 64-bit Steam identifier, not a display name, nickname, short SteamID format, or character name. Check each value before putting it in the file; one incorrect digit prevents that account from matching.
Enable the whitelist with the configuration files
This is the durable method because the switch and the permitted IDs are loaded whenever the server starts.

- Stop the server. Confirm the console or hosting panel reports that the process has exited.
- Open the active profile directory. Navigate to
U3DSServers<ServerName>Server. - Edit
Commands.dat. This file contains basic server commands, one command per line. Add the lineWhitelistedon its own line. Do not append it to another command or put a player ID on the same line. - Open or create
Whitelist.dat. Keep it in the sameServerdirectory asCommands.dat. - Add approved SteamID64 values. Put one permitted account on each line. Do not add commas, quotation marks, labels, or display names.
- Save both files. Check that the editor did not add an extra extension such as
.txt. The names must remain exactlyCommands.datandWhitelist.dat. - Start the server again. Wait for normal startup to complete before testing a connection.
Example file layout
The startup command file can contain other commands, but each command occupies its own line:
Whitelisted
The whitelist file contains only the permitted SteamID64 entries, one per line:

7656119YYYYYYYYYY
The values above are format examples, not usable IDs. Replace them with the exact SteamID64 values for the accounts you intend to permit.
Verify that the restriction is active
Do not treat a saved edit as proof that the server loaded it. Test the running server after the restart.

Whitelist.dat. It should be able to join. - Attempt a connection with an account that is not listed. It should be denied by the whitelist.
- If both accounts behave the same way, stop the server and recheck the active profile path, filenames, command spelling, and IDs.
Testing with two different accounts distinguishes a working allow-list from a server that simply remained unwhitelisted or was restarted from a different profile.
Manage permitted players while the server is running
The command reference provides runtime alternatives for administrators. Enter commands in the Server Console, or use in-game chat with an @ or / prefix when the account has administrator privileges.

Administrator access is required in chat
If a command works in the Server Console but fails in chat, the account probably lacks administrator privileges or the command prefix was omitted. Console access is separate from in-game permissions. Grant administration through one of the supported routes before relying on chat commands.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →How to grant administration for runtime management
The official administration setup supports three routes:
- Place a SteamID64 in the
Ownercommand. - Run the
Admincommand during runtime. - Use
Adminlist.dat.
Choose one route appropriate to your hosting arrangement, then reconnect or run the required command as applicable. Once the account is recognized as an administrator, use the Server Console or prefixed chat commands to manage permits. Administration is broader than whitelist membership: an administrator can have server-control abilities, while a permitted player only has join access.
File-based versus runtime whitelist management
| Management method | Persists across restarts | Administrator access needed | Best use | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Commands.dat plus Whitelist.dat |
Yes, when saved in the active profile | No special in-game role is needed to edit stopped-server files | Initial setup, permanent policy, or many IDs at once | Editing the wrong server profile or making a filename/format error |
Permit in the Server Console |
Use the server’s runtime list; verify persistence after a restart | Console access | Immediate changes while monitoring the server | Changing the wrong running instance or forgetting to verify after restarting |
Permit in in-game chat |
Use the server’s runtime list; verify persistence after a restart | Administrator privileges and an @ or / prefix |
A quick addition when an administrator is online | Permission failure, mistyped ID, or command entered without a prefix |
For a stable friends-only server, keep the configuration files as the source of truth. Runtime commands are convenient for temporary or urgent changes, but confirm the resulting list and test again after a restart so an in-memory change does not surprise you later.
Best Value
Troubleshoot a whitelist that is not working
The server still accepts everyone
- Confirm that
Whitelistedappears as a separate line inCommands.dat. - Check capitalization and spelling. Use the command exactly as
Whitelisted. - Verify that the server was stopped and started after the edit.
- Make sure you edited the profile that the launcher actually starts, not another
<ServerName>directory. - Check that the file is named
Commands.dat, rather thanCommands.dat.txtor a similarly named copy.
A permitted player is denied
- Compare the entry with the player’s exact SteamID64, digit by digit.
- Ensure the entry is in
Whitelist.datin the sameServerdirectory as the activeCommands.dat. - Put the ID on its own line with no spaces, labels, punctuation, or quotation marks.
- Save the file and restart the server; a running process may still be using the previous list.
- If you used
Permit, runPermitsto confirm that the server accepted the addition.
An unlisted player can still connect
First establish whether the whitelist command loaded at all by checking the startup file and performing a fresh restart. If the command is present but an unlisted account still joins, inspect the active profile path and verify that the test account is not unintentionally present in the effective permitted list. Test with a clearly different account rather than relying on a previously cached session.
Runtime chat commands fail
- Use the Server Console to separate command syntax problems from permission problems.
- When using chat, prefix the command with
@or/. - Confirm that the account has administrator privileges through an
Ownerentry, the runtimeAdmincommand, orAdminlist.dat. - Check the command spelling:
Permitadds an entry andPermitsdisplays the list.
Changes disappear after a restart
Recheck the file-based configuration in the active profile. A runtime change that is not reflected after restarting should not be assumed to be permanent. Re-enter the approved SteamID64 values in Whitelist.dat, retain Whitelisted in Commands.dat, and restart once more before testing.
Whitelist access versus Internet connectivity
A whitelist answers “which accounts may join?” It does not answer “can players on the Internet reach this server?” Internet hosting is a separate setup task. The official setup requirements identify a Game Server Login Token and either Fake IP or port forwarding for an Internet server.
Consequently, a server can be correctly whitelisted yet unreachable because its network exposure is incomplete. Conversely, a server can be publicly reachable but still reject every account that is not on its permitted list. Diagnose access control and network connectivity independently:
- If nobody can discover or reach the server, check the Internet-hosting prerequisites, token, and network path.
- If the server is reachable but the wrong accounts are admitted, inspect
Whitelisted,Whitelist.dat, and the restart state.
Operational checklist for a friends-only server
- Choose the exact server profile and record its
U3DSServers<ServerName>Serverpath. - Stop the server cleanly.
- Add
Whitelistedas a standalone command inCommands.dat. - Create or edit
Whitelist.datin that same directory. - Enter every approved player’s exact SteamID64 on a separate line.
- Save both files with the correct names and extensions.
- Start the server and wait for it to finish loading.
- Test one listed account and one unlisted account.
- If administrators will make live changes, verify their privileges and document whether runtime additions must also be copied into the file-based list.
- Keep Internet visibility and port or token configuration as a separate troubleshooting track.
Removing access safely
To revoke a player through the file method, stop the server, remove that account’s SteamID64 line from Whitelist.dat, save the file, and restart. For a live change, use the server’s available permit-management command or console controls, then run Permits to inspect the resulting list. Test with the removed account after the change has loaded.
Key distinction to remember
Whitelisted is the on/off switch, Whitelist.dat is the list of permitted SteamID64 accounts, and a restart is the point at which stopped-server file edits become active. Permit and Permits are the runtime tools for administrators. Keeping those responsibilities distinct makes a friends-only Unturned server predictable to maintain.
