WordPress Multisite vs Multiple Installations: Which to Choose

WordPress Multisite centralizes core files, themes, plugins and administration for a coordinated portfolio. Separate installations provide independent code, databases, hosting, teams and migrations. This guide explains the trade-offs and gives a practical decision framework.

Choose WordPress Multisite when your sites are one managed portfolio with shared code, governance and deployment practices. Choose separate WordPress installations when sites need independent databases, hosting, administrators, release schedules, migration paths or failure boundaries. Multisite reduces duplicated administration, but it also makes the network’s technical decisions a constraint for every site. Independent installations require more maintenance, while preserving the freedom to let each site evolve on its own.

What the two architectures actually are

WordPress Multisite

WordPress Multisite creates several sites from one WordPress installation. WordPress Developer Resources defines it this way: “A multisite network is a collection of sites that all share the same WordPress installation core files.” The network uses one set of WordPress core files, and the network administrator installs themes and plugins centrally. Those themes and plugins can then be activated for individual sites according to the network’s governance rules.

Each site still has its own content tables and media-upload directory. A subsite therefore has separate posts, pages, settings and uploaded files, even though the sites live inside the same installation and database model. Multisite is a management architecture, not an automatic content-sharing system.

During setup, you choose a URL pattern based on subdomains, such as store.example.com, or subdirectories, such as example.com/store. A network can also serve mapped top-level domains, but that requires DNS, SSL and web-server configuration rather than a simple toggle in the dashboard.

Multiple independent installations

With multiple installations, every site is a separate WordPress instance with its own files and configuration. WordPress documents several variants:

  • Separate instances can use one database with different table prefixes.
  • Each instance can use its own database while sharing a hosting server.
  • Each instance can run on a separate server, hosting provider or infrastructure stack.

A separate-database installation has its own wp-config.php database settings and connection. That creates a clearer boundary for credentials, backups, incidents and migrations. The trade-off is operational duplication: core, plugins, themes, updates, monitoring and security work must be repeated for every installation unless you add fleet-management tooling.

Multisite versus separate installations at a glance

Decision axis Multisite Multiple installations
Core, themes and plugins One core installation; themes and plugins can be installed and governed centrally. Every instance has its own files and update process.
Site autonomy Site administrators operate within network-level plugin and theme controls. Each installation can select its own code, settings and release timing.
Data and failure boundaries Sites have separate content tables within the shared installation and database model. Separate databases and infrastructure provide stronger operational separation.
Domains Subdomains and subdirectories are native patterns; mapped top-level domains need DNS and SSL work. Each installation can point to its own domain independently.
Server configuration URL rewriting is required; configuration differs between Apache, IIS and Nginx. Each site follows ordinary single-site server configuration.
Migration The entire network and its relationships must be planned together; WordPress describes Multisite moves as more complicated than moving one installation. Sites can be migrated one at a time, with a separate procedure for each.

How Multisite changes day-to-day administration

Centralized code governance

The network administrator controls which themes and plugins are available. A site administrator may be able to activate an approved extension, but cannot necessarily install arbitrary code. This is useful when every site must follow the same security review, branding system, PHP compatibility policy or deployment calendar.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Centralization also creates a shared blast radius. A plugin update that causes a fatal error, performance problem or compatibility conflict can affect more than one site. Test updates against representative subsites before applying them to a production network, and keep a tested rollback or restore process.

Separate content does not mean shared application data

Multisite subsites are separate and are not automatically interconnected. WordPress’s preparation guidance cautions that Multisite may not be the best choice when sites require strong interconnection, shared data or shared users. If the main requirement is a unified application with genuinely shared records, design that data-sharing layer deliberately rather than assuming that putting sites in one network will provide it.

Network and site administration

A network administrator manages installation-wide themes, plugins and network settings. Individual site administrators manage their own site content and whatever controls the network makes available. This division works well for a central IT or publishing team supervising many similar sites. It is less suitable when customers or departments must have unrestricted control over code and configuration.

Domain choices and web-server work

Subdomains and subdirectories are built-in network URL patterns. For a domain-based network, point DNS records to the server, install valid SSL certificates for the required hostnames, configure the network’s URL behavior and verify rewrite rules. Native domain mapping has been available since WordPress 4.5, but the surrounding DNS, certificate and web-server work still applies.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

URL rewriting is mandatory. Apache, IIS and Nginx use different configuration methods, and WordPress does not generate Nginx configuration for you. A network that works on one server can fail after a move if rewrite rules, wildcard DNS, certificate coverage or proxy settings are not reproduced.

What independence looks like with separate installations

Independent technology choices

Each site can run a different theme, plugin set, PHP-compatible codebase and deployment schedule. One site can adopt a new editor or commerce extension while another remains on a conservative stack. You can also give different teams control over staging, releases and maintenance windows.

Independent infrastructure and credentials

Separate installations can use different hosting providers, servers, databases, system users, deployment keys and backup destinations. A compromised administrator account or failed server is less likely to become a network-wide event when credentials and infrastructure are not shared.

For separate WordPress installations, Antihost managed WordPress hosting gives each site its own isolated environment, with one-click staging, free migration, automated and manual backups, and free SSL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Independent ownership and transfer

If a site may be sold, transferred to another agency or handed to a different customer, an independent installation is usually easier to package. Its files, database, configuration and domain can be documented and moved without extracting one site from a larger network.

The operational cost of autonomy

Independence does not eliminate maintenance; it distributes it. Every installation needs its own update testing, vulnerability response, backups, uptime checks, staging process and recovery documentation. A central fleet-management process can reduce repetitive work, but the sites remain separate systems with separate failure investigations.

When Multisite is the better fit

  • One organization owns the portfolio. A single team is accountable for security, updates, DNS and support.
  • The sites share a design and plugin baseline. A common theme system, approved extension list or deployment cadence is a benefit rather than a restriction.
  • Central administration matters more than local freedom. You want one place to govern code and network-wide settings.
  • The sites are structurally similar. Regional offices, school departments, franchise locations or product microsites can often use a repeatable setup.
  • You can operate the network infrastructure. Your team can handle DNS, SSL certificates, URL rewriting and the selected web server.

Before choosing it, confirm that every site can live with the same core version, plugin policy and maintenance windows. A portfolio that is similar today can become a poor Multisite candidate if its sites are expected to diverge materially.

When separate installations make more sense

  • Sites need materially different code. Conflicting plugins, themes, PHP requirements or custom integrations are warning signs.
  • Teams or customers need full autonomy. Separate administrators should be able to install, configure and update their own software.
  • Release schedules differ. A site with urgent releases should not be tied to a network-wide change window.
  • Hosting or geography differs. Regulatory, latency, residency or vendor requirements may require separate environments.
  • Failure isolation is a priority. You need an incident on one site to remain contained, with separate credentials and recovery paths.
  • An eventual split is likely. Planned sale, transfer, rebranding or organizational separation favors an architecture that is already independent.
  • The sites need strong shared data or user integration. Multisite does not automatically provide those relationships; choose a deliberate integration design instead.

Can Multisite use different domains?

Yes. Subdomains and subdirectories are native choices, and mapped top-level domains are supported. The mapping itself is only one part of the implementation:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Create the required DNS records so each hostname resolves to the network server.
  2. Obtain and install SSL certificates covering every hostname, including any wildcard or alternate names your design requires.
  3. Configure the network’s domain and URL behavior in WordPress and in the web server or reverse proxy.
  4. Verify rewrite rules for the selected server software. Nginx requires administrator-written configuration because WordPress does not generate it.
  5. Test login cookies, media URLs, redirects, canonical URLs and mixed-content behavior for every mapped site.

If you do not control DNS, certificates and server configuration, the apparent convenience of one installation may be outweighed by deployment complexity. Separate installations still need domain and SSL setup, but each site follows a conventional single-site configuration rather than a network-wide mapping scheme.

Do all Multisite sites share plugins and themes?

They share the installed code, but not necessarily the enabled functionality. The network administrator installs themes and plugins once. Individual sites can use only the themes and plugins that network policy makes available, and activation can be controlled per site. This is efficient for a standard stack and restrictive for teams that need unapproved extensions.

Because the code is shared, treat plugin and theme updates as network changes. Check compatibility with the network’s WordPress and PHP versions, test on a staging copy or representative site, and schedule maintenance with every affected site owner in mind.

Database and backup boundaries

Multisite boundaries

Each subsite has separate content tables and media-upload directories, but the installation and database model are shared. A backup and restore plan must therefore understand both network-wide components and site-specific data. Decide whether your tooling can restore one subsite safely or whether recovery is performed for the entire network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate-installation boundaries

With separate databases, each site has its own database credentials, tables, files and restore set. Shared-database installations with distinct table prefixes are possible, but they provide less isolation than separate databases and still require careful backup and access controls.

Do not select a database arrangement solely for convenience. Match it to the recovery unit you need: the smallest set of data and code that must be restored after an error, compromise or infrastructure failure.

Migration: the decision many teams underestimate

Why Multisite moves need more planning

WordPress states that moving a Multisite installation is more complicated than moving a single install. A move can involve network URL settings, subsite-specific tables, media paths, domain mappings, rewrite rules, serialized configuration, user relationships and server-level DNS or SSL changes. Extracting one subsite from a network adds another layer of work because its data and uploads must be separated from shared network components.

What independent migrations look like

An independent site still needs a tested file-and-database migration, URL updates, DNS cutover, SSL validation and post-move checks. The difference is scope: one site can be moved, restored or handed over without coordinating every other site in the portfolio.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pre-commit migration test

  1. Make a full backup of files, databases, uploads and configuration, and document where each component is stored.
  2. Restore that backup in a non-production environment using the same server software and PHP assumptions as the target.
  3. For Multisite, test both a complete network restore and the smallest site-level recovery your business requires.
  4. Exercise domain changes, redirects, login sessions, scheduled tasks, media delivery and email links.
  5. Record the exact DNS, SSL, rewrite and database steps so another administrator can repeat them.
  6. Measure the time to restore and define who approves a rollback before the production cutover.

If the team cannot demonstrate the required recovery procedure, treat that as an architectural risk rather than waiting until the first emergency.

Common selection mistakes

Choosing Multisite only to save disk space

The strongest reason for Multisite is coordinated governance, not an assumed performance or cost percentage. No authoritative benchmark establishes a universal speed advantage or guaranteed saving. Hosting limits, traffic patterns, plugin behavior, backups and support work determine the real operating cost.

Assuming one database means one shared application

Subsites are separate and are not automatically linked. If users, products, inventory or editorial records must be shared, specify the integration and permissions model explicitly.

Ignoring the network administrator boundary

Confirm who can install code, approve updates, access network settings and respond to incidents. A customer or department that expects full control may be frustrated by Multisite’s centralized governance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Underestimating server configuration

Test the actual Apache, IIS or Nginx configuration, including rewrites, wildcard or per-domain DNS, SSL coverage and proxy behavior. A dashboard setup that appears complete is not proof that every hostname works correctly.

Failing to plan the exit

Ask how one site would be transferred, sold or isolated. If the answer involves an untested extraction from a network, that future event should influence today’s architecture.

A practical decision checklist

Select Multisite only when most answers below are “yes”:

  • Will one organization own and operate every site?
  • Can all sites use the same WordPress core, PHP support policy and approved extension set?
  • Are centralized updates and network administration more valuable than per-site autonomy?
  • Can the team manage DNS, SSL certificates and rewrite configuration?
  • Is a network-wide backup and recovery model acceptable?

Select separate installations when any of these conditions is decisive:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A site needs a different plugin, theme, PHP codebase or release calendar.
  • Different customers or teams require independent administrators and credentials.
  • Separate hosting, databases, regions, backups or incident boundaries are required.
  • A site may need to be migrated, sold or transferred independently.
  • The sites require shared application data or users that Multisite will not provide automatically.

The bottom line for common scenarios

Scenario More suitable starting point Reason
One company’s regional sites with one design system Multisite Central code governance and repeatable administration outweigh local autonomy.
Several client websites managed by an agency Separate installations Clients need independent credentials, contracts, migrations and failure boundaries.
Departments that need unrelated plugins and release dates Separate installations Network-wide code policy would become a constraint.
Many branded sites that must share actual business records Evaluate an integration architecture first Multisite does not automatically interconnect content, users or application data.
A portfolio likely to be split or sold Separate installations Independent ownership and migration are simpler from the start.

There is no universal winner. Multisite is the right tool when the sites are one operational unit with shared code and governance. Separate installations are the safer default when independence, transferability and fault isolation matter more than centralized administration.
