How to adjust exposure on a Galaxy phone

Open the Camera app.

Tap Quick controls, then choose Exposure.

Move the slider toward brighter or darker, then take the photo. Samsung says the exposure icon highlights when you change the setting.

Samsung’s guidance says this adjustment resets when Camera is closed, so set it again in a later camera session if needed. The controls can vary by model and software version. Samsung India’s exposure instructions describe the current steps; Samsung US’s Galaxy S25 guidance also identifies Exposure as a quick control.

Why you may not see an HDR switch
There is no single HDR menu path for every Galaxy. In an August 16, 2023 Samsung Members FAQ, Samsung says automatic HDR is always active in standard Camera mode on One UI 4.0 and later. The FAQ describes Pro mode as not applying HDR and says Camera Assistant or Expert RAW may offer Auto HDR controls on supported setups. It also notes that some models released before the Galaxy S22 may have an Auto HDR or HDR (Rich Tone) option in Camera settings. These instructions are version- and device-dependent, not a universal map of current menus. Samsung Members’ Galaxy Camera FAQ gives those qualifications; Samsung’s support guidance likewise cautions that settings vary by model and software.

Before following an online menu path, check your phone model, installed One UI version, and camera mode. If a setting disappeared after an update, that context helps distinguish a changed interface from a feature that is not supported on your setup.
Why a saved photo can look different from the preview
Samsung describes HDR as capturing three images at different exposure levels and combining them into one final image. That processing is intended to retain detail across bright and dark parts of mixed-light scenes, so the saved image’s balance can differ from what a single exposure would produce. This explains one way brightness can change; it does not establish a universal cause for every Galaxy photo that looks different after saving. When troubleshooting, first identify what looks different: the live Camera preview, the saved photo in Gallery, or an image opened in another app. Samsung says camera photos and videos are saved to Gallery for viewing and management, but the cited support information does not identify one universal post-capture cause across Galaxy models. Choose the control that matches the result you want

Make the capture brighter or darker: adjust Exposure in Quick controls before taking the photo. This is the simplest adjustment, but Samsung says it resets when Camera closes. Samsung’s instructions explain the slider.

Control more than brightness: where available, Pro Photo mode offers ISO, shutter speed, white balance, and exposure controls; Samsung also says it can save RAW images for later editing. Feature availability depends on the device and app. Samsung’s camera technology overview describes these Pro Photo options.

Avoid HDR processing: the Samsung Members FAQ says Pro mode does not apply HDR; Camera Assistant or Expert RAW may provide Auto HDR controls on supported setups. Standard Photo mode on One UI 4.0 and later is described as using automatic HDR, while some pre-S22 models may expose an HDR setting. Check the model and software before relying on any of these routes. Samsung Members’ FAQ sets out the version-dependent options.

These controls address different goals: Exposure changes the requested brightness, while HDR combines different exposure levels to balance a scene. A darker exposure may reduce brightness, but whether it gives the natural-looking result you want depends on the scene and the phone’s processing.

Whether Exposure was changed before capture; the setting does not persist after Camera closes, according to Samsung’s guidance.
Without those details, a brighter saved photo cannot be assigned to one cause with confidence. Samsung’s documentation establishes the available controls and a general HDR process, not a model-independent diagnosis.
