Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Before you transfer files to a used MacBook Air, make sure the previous owner has removed Activation Lock and protect your data with a backup. Then choose the reset method for the Mac’s processor and macOS version, and use Migration Assistant to move files from another Mac, a Time Machine backup, a startup disk, or a Windows PC. You can migrate during first-time setup or later.
1. Make sure the Mac is no longer linked to its previous owner
If setup asks for the previous owner’s Apple Account, Activation Lock has not been cleared. Ask the seller to remove the Mac from their account before you continue. Erasing the Mac does not necessarily clear the lock: Apple says reactivation may require the linked account password or the device passcode. See Apple’s Activation Lock guidance.

Do not treat a successful erase as proof that the Mac is ready for you. Resolve an account prompt with the previous owner before entering your own details or relying on the Mac as yours.
2. Identify the Mac before deciding whether to erase it
A reset is useful when you want a clean start, but it is not required just to transfer files. If you choose to erase the Mac, first identify whether it has Apple silicon or an Intel processor, and check its macOS version. Apple’s steps differ by hardware and operating system.

Apple silicon or Intel with T2 on macOS Monterey 12 or later
Apple says Erase Assistant is available on Apple silicon Macs and Intel Macs with a T2 Security Chip running macOS Monterey 12 or later. It signs out of Apple services, disables Find My and Activation Lock, and removes accounts, files, settings, installed apps, and volumes. Use Apple’s Erase all content and settings instructions to confirm eligibility and follow the steps for your macOS version.
Other Intel Macs
Older Intel models may not support Erase Assistant. Apple’s macOS Recovery erase-and-reinstall instructions cover the alternative process. Follow the procedure for the Mac rather than assuming that menus or steps for a newer model apply.

3. Back up the source Mac before moving or erasing anything
Keep an independent copy of important files before you erase a computer or begin a migration. Apple’s Time Machine guide explains how to back up a Mac or selected files to an external hard drive. This is the more complete option when you need a backup of the Mac rather than just a few synced categories.
iCloud can sync selected data, including photos, files, notes, passwords, contacts, and calendars. It is not a full-Mac backup: Apple explicitly states, “iCloud doesn’t back up your entire Mac.” Use iCloud for the categories you want synced, not as the only safeguard for everything on the source computer.

4. Choose how to transfer your files
| Source | How to transfer | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Another Mac | Use Migration Assistant during setup or later. | Connect both Macs to the same network for wireless migration, or connect them directly with a cable. Apple says a direct connection is often faster; the cited guide does not specify one universal cable type. |
| Time Machine backup or startup disk | Select the Mac, Time Machine backup, or startup-disk source in Migration Assistant. | A Time Machine backup requires an external hard drive. Apple’s migration guidance does not state a transfer time. |
| Windows PC | Choose the Windows PC source in Migration Assistant and use the Windows Migration Assistant version that matches the receiving Mac’s macOS. | Check Apple’s current download instructions for the compatible version. |
| iCloud | Sign in and enable syncing for the categories you need. | Syncs selected data; it does not migrate or back up the entire Mac. |
| No transfer yet | Set up the Mac as new and run Migration Assistant later. | Skipping migration in first-time setup does not close the option. |
Apple’s guide to migrating to a new Mac covers Mac, Time Machine, startup-disk, and Windows sources. For a wireless Mac-to-Mac transfer, Apple says both computers should be on the same network. Its Windows migration guide notes that large transfers may take hours and can appear to pause; the actual time varies.
5. Migrate during first-time setup or afterward
During initial setup
- Turn on the MacBook Air and follow Setup Assistant. If you have already erased the Mac, use Apple’s reset steps for its model and macOS version first.
- When Setup Assistant offers to transfer information, choose the option that matches your source: another Mac, a Time Machine backup or startup disk, or a Windows PC.
- Prepare the source as required. For wireless Mac-to-Mac migration, connect both computers to the same network; for a wired connection, connect them directly.
- Follow the on-screen instructions on both computers. Keep them connected and powered during migration. A large transfer can take hours and may appear to pause, so allow it to finish.
After initial setup
- Open Migration Assistant on the new Mac. Apple’s migration guide provides the current steps and source options for your macOS version.
- Choose the source type and follow the prompts to connect to the other Mac, backup, startup disk, or Windows PC.
- Leave the source and receiving computers connected until Migration Assistant reports completion.
If you are moving from Windows, get the Windows Migration Assistant version that matches the macOS installed on the MacBook Air; Apple’s download instructions can change as macOS versions change.

6. Finish setup and verify your files
Complete account and macOS setup, then open the files and apps that matter to you: for example, several documents, photos, and folders from different locations. Check that they are present and usable on the new Mac before you erase, trade in, or otherwise retire the old computer or its backup. This is a cautious verification step, not a guarantee from Migration Assistant that every item has transferred exactly as expected.
