Samsung Fridge Temperature Settings: What to Set and How to Adjust Them

Samsung’s recommended temperatures vary by region and model. Identify your control panel, set a suitable target, and allow time for the compartment to stabilize before checking it.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most Samsung refrigerators in the US, Samsung recommends 38°F for the fridge and -2°F for the freezer. The right setting and the button sequence depend on your model and region, so use these as starting points—not universal values—and follow your model’s manual if it specifies something different.

What temperature should a Samsung fridge and freezer be?

Samsung’s recommended starting settings differ slightly by region. These are appliance settings, not the same thing as food-safety limits.

Guidance Refrigerator Freezer Qualification
Samsung US starting settings 38°F -2°F Recommended for most models. Samsung US guidance.
Samsung Canada starting settings 3°C (38°F) -19°C (-2°F) Current Canadian guidance. Samsung Canada guidance.
Samsung UK starting settings +3°C -18°C Guidance based on an ambient temperature of 25°C; updated August 4, 2026. Samsung UK guidance.

For food storage, Samsung US cites USDA advice to keep refrigerated food below 40°F and frozen food below 0°F. Samsung Canada cites Health Canada advice to keep refrigerated food below 4°C and frozen food below -18°C. These are food-storage thresholds; they are not Samsung’s recommended display settings. See the corresponding US and Canadian guidance.

Use your model’s manual if its recommended settings differ. Samsung notes that controls and options vary by model, and some options vary by country. Find your model number and match the panel before following a button sequence.

Identify your control panel first

Samsung refrigerators do not all use the same controls. Check whether yours has a Family Hub screen, separate Fridge and Freezer buttons, arrow controls, or a simpler dial. The model-specific manual is the best guide when your controls do not match the descriptions below. Samsung’s temperature-setting guide covers several common control types.

Control type How you choose a setting What to check
Family Hub Adjust through SmartThings; Samsung identifies Fridge Manager for older models. App and feature availability depends on the model and generation.
Separate Fridge and Freezer buttons Press the button for the compartment repeatedly to cycle through its available settings. On the US guide’s described panels, each press changes by one degree or one temperature bar; the sequence cycles back to the highest setting.
Arrow controls or touchscreen Use the arrows to select the compartment or setting, then press the select/confirmation control if the panel requires it. Button names and confirmation steps differ; check the manual for your panel.
Dial or other panel Use the control and instructions shown in your model’s manual. Do not assume a dial position or range is the same across models.

How to adjust the temperature

  1. Find the model number and panel type. Use the model-specific user manual if the controls are unfamiliar or the panel does not match the examples.
  2. Choose the compartment. On a Family Hub model, use SmartThings, or Fridge Manager on older models. On a button panel, choose Fridge or Freezer. On an arrow panel, navigate to the compartment or temperature setting.
  3. Set the target. Start with the regional guidance for your model: typically 38°F and -2°F in the US, 3°C and -19°C in Canada, or +3°C and -18°C in UK guidance based on 25°C ambient temperature.
  4. Confirm the change if your panel requires it. Button panels may apply a setting as you cycle; arrow panels may have a select button. Follow the manual if the confirmation behavior is unclear.
  5. Give the compartment time to respond. Avoid frequent door openings while it settles. Samsung Canada says the actual interior temperature may take up to 28 hours to stabilize after an adjustment.

Some top-freezer and upright models allow a compartment to be converted or turned off. Use those options only if your model supports them and its manual explains the effect; they are not ordinary temperature adjustments.

How to check the actual temperature

The display may show an average rather than the temperature at every point in the compartment. Samsung notes that refrigerators can have warmer and cooler zones, so a displayed setting is not necessarily a direct reading of the food’s temperature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. For the refrigerator: Put a thermometer in a glass of water near the middle of the compartment. Leave it undisturbed; Samsung says a reading may take up to eight hours.
  2. For the freezer: Place the thermometer between frozen packages.
  3. Compare the result with the food-storage threshold for your region. If the compartment is too warm, lower its setting and allow time for it to stabilize before checking again.

A refrigerator or fridge-and-freezer thermometer is optional; you can change the setting using the refrigerator controls without buying one. Samsung’s US and Canadian instructions describe thermometer placement and checking.

  • INSTALLATION AND DIAGNOSIS – Disconnect refrigerator power before servicing. Inaccurate temperature readings or unstable cooling may also be caused by damaged wiring, fans, control boards or other components, so confirm the original sensor is faulty before replacement.

If the fridge still seems too warm

  • Check the actual temperature with the placement and wait times above instead of relying only on the display.
  • If it is above the relevant food-storage threshold, lower the setting and wait before checking again. Samsung US recommends waiting 28 hours after lowering the setting before rechecking a compartment that was above its cited threshold.
  • Minimize door openings while waiting; repeated openings can interfere with the appliance settling.
  • If the panel’s controls or available settings differ from these steps, consult the manual for your exact model rather than assuming another Samsung model uses the same range or sequence.
