To try the iPhone trick, turn on grayscale: go to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Color Filters, switch on Color Filters, then select Grayscale. It changes the screen’s appearance; it does not set a time limit or block apps. Whether the less colorful display makes you less likely to open or keep using an app is something to test for yourself, not an effect Apple promises.
How to turn on grayscale on iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Accessibility, then Display & Text Size.
- Tap Color Filters and turn on Color Filters.
- Select Grayscale.
Apple’s Color Filters are designed to adjust how content appears on screen, including for people with color-vision needs. The other filter options include color adjustments and screen tinting. Filters may also change the appearance of pictures and videos. Menu wording can vary with iOS versions.

Grayscale is a visual cue: icons, photos, and other content appear without color. It does not impose a usage quota, schedule downtime, silence notifications, or prevent you from opening an app. The idea that a less colorful screen might make you pause before scrolling is a reasonable personal experiment, but Apple’s support guidance does not establish that grayscale reduces screen time.

Try it during the times you tend to scroll automatically, then decide whether the change makes a difference to you. If you still open apps out of habit, choose a setting that adds a stronger boundary rather than expecting a display filter to do that job.
Choose a built-in setting for the kind of friction you need

These features solve different problems; Apple’s documentation describes how they work, not which one is most effective at changing an individual’s habits. Use the least restrictive option that addresses the problem you have noticed.

Set a stronger boundary with Screen Time
For app-specific limits or scheduled downtime, open Settings > Screen Time. Set an App Limit for the apps or categories you want to constrain, or schedule Downtime for a period when you want most apps unavailable. If you need restricted apps blocked during scheduled downtime, enable Block at Downtime. Apple notes that app limits can be ignored by default, so check the available controls if a reminder is not enough.
To understand when you reach for your phone, review Screen Time reports. They include app and website use, pickups, and notifications. If you use more than one Apple device, Share Across Devices can apply Screen Time limits or schedules across those devices when enabled.

Use Focus to reduce interruptions
Focus is for managing interruptions, not setting a scrolling quota. Apple describes it as a feature that helps you concentrate by minimizing distractions. You can silence notifications or allow selected people and apps, and choose a Lock Screen or Home Screen to use with a Focus. It is a useful choice when alerts—or a busy Home Screen—keep pulling your attention away.

Guided Access temporarily keeps iPhone in a single app and can be configured with a time limit. It suits a defined task, such as staying in a reading or learning app for a session. Because it restricts the device to one app, it is not a general control for scrolling across multiple apps.

- Want a small visual change? Try grayscale and see whether it prompts you to pause.
- Want to cap or schedule access to specific apps? Use Screen Time limits or Downtime.
- Want fewer interruptions? Configure Focus.
- Need to stay in one app for a set session? Use Guided Access.
