To set up a Samsung refrigerator ice maker, first check your exact model’s manual: controls, water connections, filters, and reset buttons vary. If your model needs a household water line, connect it without leaks and confirm adequate pressure; then enable the ice maker and allow time for initial production. If no ice appears, check the control, bucket, door seal, water supply, and filter before trying a reset.
Start with your refrigerator’s model and ice-maker location
Find the full model code on the refrigerator label and open the matching Samsung Support manual. Ice makers may be in the refrigerator compartment, freezer, freezer door, or another location. Their activation controls and Test buttons differ, so there is no single button sequence that applies to every Samsung refrigerator.

Use the manual to identify whether your model has a water dispenser, a replaceable water filter, one or more ice makers, and a household water-line connection. Instructions below are based on Samsung US support guidance; availability and setup details may differ by model and region.

Connect a water line if your model requires one
Some ice makers need a connection to household water. If there is no suitable refrigerator supply line, Samsung says a water-line kit may be needed. Its installation guidance lists common components such as 1/4-inch compression nuts, copper or plastic tubing, a ferrule for copper tubing, a compression fitting, and a molded end for plastic tubing. These are examples, not a guarantee that a particular kit or fitting fits every refrigerator or plumbing setup. Check your model manual and the fitting requirements for your home.

- Follow the model manual and kit instructions to connect the tubing to the refrigerator and water supply.
- Tighten the compression nut until it reaches the fitting; Samsung advises against over-tightening.
- Turn on the water supply and inspect the connection points for leaks. If you find a leak, turn off the main water supply, check the connections, and tighten as needed.
Samsung specifies at least 30 psi for proper ice-maker operation. Low pressure can prevent ice production or result in undersized cubes. If pressure is uncertain, confirm the water supply before assuming the refrigerator has a mechanical fault. Get qualified plumbing help if the installation is unclear or a connection continues to leak.
Install the correct filter and flush water when applicable
If your refrigerator uses a replaceable water filter, use the filter specified for your model. Filter location and installation steps differ; consult the manual or Samsung’s filter guidance rather than assuming filters are interchangeable. For dispenser models, Samsung says to dispense one gallon of water before drinking or using refrigerator water after setup.

Samsung separately recommends dispensing two to three gallons of water and discarding the first batch of ice when addressing an unpleasant taste or odor in a new refrigerator. This is a taste-and-odor recommendation, distinct from the one-gallon instruction for applicable dispenser models.

Allow time for the first ice
For a newly activated ice maker, Samsung advises allowing one to two days for ice production and discarding the first two buckets to help clear impurities from the water line. This is setup guidance, not a promise that every model will produce at a particular rate.

Check these things if the refrigerator is not making ice
Before resetting anything, work through the checks that can stop production or make the refrigerator think its bucket is full:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Ice-maker status: Confirm the control is set to make ice, using the indicator or app control specified for your model.
- Bucket position: Seat and latch the ice bucket correctly. Remove non-ice items from it; an obstruction can be detected as a full bucket.
- Door and seal: Make sure the freezer door or ice-maker compartment closes and seals properly. Frost or a poor seal can affect temperature.
- Water supply: Confirm the household valve is on and the line is connected. Look for leaks and consider whether pressure meets Samsung’s 30 psi minimum.
- Filter: Check that the correct filter is installed and is not due for replacement. Follow the model-specific troubleshooting instructions if checking operation without a filter.
For dispenser-equipped refrigerators, Samsung’s troubleshooting guide gives a water-flow check: 6 ounces (three-quarters of a cup) should dispense in less than 10 seconds. The guide also discusses filter removal as a diagnostic step in certain situations; do not treat that as a general setup instruction. Use the Samsung troubleshooting guide for the steps applicable to your plumbing and model.
Reset the ice maker only after basic checks
Samsung describes a Test-button reset as a later troubleshooting step when an ice maker is not making ice. The button’s location and reset sequence depend on the design; it may be on the side or bottom, and some models require removing a cover. Follow the reset instructions for your exact ice-maker type.
- Remove the ice bucket if the model instructions call for it and locate the Test button.
- Press and hold the button as directed, until you hear a chime or see movement.
- Reinstall the bucket correctly after the test, following the manual.
- If there is no chime and no movement, Samsung’s guidance says to power-cycle the refrigerator for two minutes, then try again.
Do not keep pressing Test. Samsung warns that repeated tests can cause water to overflow or ice to jam, and its general reset guidance recommends no more than one reset per day. If the correct reset procedure does not work, or water continues to leak, use Samsung support for model-specific troubleshooting rather than repeating the test.
