If your Samsung fridge freezer is not making ice, first check whether the bucket is empty or whether ice is present but will not dispense. Then verify the ice maker is switched on, the bucket is seated, the freezer can reach the temperature required for your model, and water can flow to the appliance. Samsung controls, reset steps and recovery times vary by model and region, so find the complete model code and use its matching manual before changing settings or removing parts.
First, distinguish an ice-making problem from a dispensing problem
Look inside the ice bucket. If it is empty, follow the production checks below. If it contains ice, the maker may be working and the fault may be at the dispenser instead.

- For ice that will not dispense, check whether Child Lock or Dispenser Lock is on, whether cubes are fused together, whether the chute is blocked, and whether the bucket is fully seated. Samsung notes that the dispenser motor may sound as if it is running when the bucket is not engaged correctly. See Samsung’s dispenser troubleshooting guidance.
- If the bucket is empty or nearly empty, work through the ice-production checks that follow. An empty bucket alone does not identify a failed part.
Check the controls and bucket
Make sure the ice maker is enabled. Controls differ: some models show an Ice Off indicator, some top-freezer models show Ice On, and connected models may offer controls through Fridge Manager or SmartThings. Use the exact model’s manual for button sequences rather than assuming another Samsung model uses the same controls.

Check freezing conditions, airflow and door closure
The ice maker needs the freezer and its ice-making area to reach the conditions specified for that model. Samsung’s US and UK guidance differs, so there is no single setpoint in this guidance that applies to every Samsung fridge freezer. Check the model manual for the appropriate setting.
- Make sure food is not blocking the freezer air vents.
- Limit repeated door openings while the appliance cools.
- Check that the doors close fully and that the ice-maker area is sealed as designed.
- If you see frost around the freezer or bucket, treat that as a separate clue to investigate rather than assuming a reset will solve it.
For regional guidance, see Samsung’s US troubleshooting page and UK ice-production guidance.
Verify water supply and flow
A closed household valve, kinked or leaking line, low water pressure, or restricted filter can interrupt filling or result in small cubes. Check that the supply valve is fully open and that the refrigerator line is connected, unkinked and not leaking.

If your model has a water dispenser, Samsung US suggests checking whether it dispenses 6 ounces (three-quarters of a cup) in under 10 seconds. This is a water-flow check, not a measurement of ice production. In the specific situation where the ice-maker test did not deliver water after a water-line adjustment, Samsung says to confirm at least 20 psi before continuing and recommends asking a plumber to check the supply. That threshold is not a diagnosis for every ice-maker problem. Samsung also warns that a reverse-osmosis system may reduce pressure. Details are on its US troubleshooting page.
Consider the filter only if the symptoms point to restricted flow
A filter that is restricted or overdue can reduce water flow. Samsung US rates its filters for 300 gallons, described as about six months of use in an average household; that is a rated usage interval, not a guarantee that every household will reach the same replacement date. Its US guidance suggests comparing operation with the filter removed in the troubleshooting conditions it describes. If production returns, replace the filter with one approved for your exact model. Regional instructions refer to Samsung-approved or compatible filters, so check the manual and local guidance before buying.
Choose a replacement water filter for your exact Samsung model only when the appliance uses one and the flow checks make the filter a plausible cause. Samsung’s US troubleshooting instructions and UK guidance cover filter considerations.

Use the test or reset procedure for your model—not a generic button sequence
The Test button’s location, access method and test duration vary by ice-maker design. Consult the matching manual before removing a cover or bucket. For some freezer-door models, Samsung instructs owners to remove the bucket or cover, locate Test and hold it until a chime. If there is no chime and no movement, its instructions say to power-cycle the refrigerator for two minutes and try again, then reinstall the bucket until it clicks. Other designs have different procedures; see Samsung’s model-dependent reset guidance.
Do not repeatedly press Test. Samsung warns that after the tray has filled, repeated tests can make water overflow or ice jam. A test is a diagnostic step after basic checks, not a universal first fix.

| What you observe | What to check or do next | What it may indicate |
|---|---|---|
| Bucket empty and maker enabled | Check the model’s temperature requirement, airflow, door and seal, water supply, then the model-specific test. | Several causes remain possible; the symptom alone does not identify a failed component. |
| Test cycle moves but does not fill | Check the valve, line, pressure, filter and model-specific connections. | A supply-side restriction is plausible; Samsung identifies low pressure as one possible cause. |
| Cubes are small or shattered | Check water flow, pressure, line kinks and filter condition. | Samsung associates small or shattered cubes with low pressure. |
| Ice is in the bucket but will not dispense | Check lock settings, clumped cubes, the chute and bucket seating. | This points to dispensing rather than necessarily failed ice production. |
| No response to the correct test after power cycling | Arrange Samsung service or qualified appliance repair. | Samsung advises service when the maker remains unresponsive. |
After the checks in its US procedure, Samsung says production should begin within three hours, although normal amounts may take up to 24 hours. These are manufacturer guidance for that procedure, not a guarantee for every model or after every repair. Samsung UK provides separate installation and first-use timings; follow the guidance for your region and model. See the US troubleshooting page and UK guidance.

Samsung’s production figures are model-dependent examples, not a universal performance promise: its US page says refrigerator-compartment makers may produce a tray every 45–65 minutes and freezer-compartment makers every 85 minutes. It defines a tray as eight cubes for a full-size refrigerator and six for a counter-depth refrigerator. The UK page reports approximately 120 cubes per day for refrigerators fitted with Samsung ice makers under its own guidance and conditions. These regional figures use different contexts and should not be combined as a single benchmark.
If the maker remains unresponsive to the correct test, or does not recover after the relevant model-specific waiting period, request Samsung service or contact a qualified appliance repair professional. Do not guess at replacing a valve, sensor or ice-maker assembly based only on an empty bucket.
