What keeps working during an outage depends on the bulb, how it connects, and whether your router and local network stay powered. Local controls may continue on some models; remote access, voice assistants, setup, and updates often rely on internet service.
Internet, Wi-Fi, and bulb connections are different things
“Wi-Fi” and “internet” are often used interchangeably, but they refer to different parts of a smart-lighting setup. Your router creates a local network in the home. Internet service connects that network to services outside the home. A bulb may communicate with your phone over local Wi-Fi, directly over Bluetooth, or with a hub over Zigbee.

So an internet outage does not necessarily switch off the bulb. If the router and local network remain on, some local controls may still work. If the router loses power, a Wi-Fi bulb generally cannot communicate over that network, even if the bulb itself still has power.
What may work when the internet is down?
Outage behavior is feature-specific. Check the exact bulb and setup rather than assuming that all smart features will continue.

| Local app control | May continue for some products if the router and local network stay on and the phone is connected to that network. LIFX says its basic controls work over local Wi-Fi without internet; IKEA says local app control works when the phone and hub system remain on the same Wi-Fi network. LIFX Wi-Fi requirements; IKEA support |
| Remote control away from home | Typically depends on internet access. LIFX says remote app control requires active internet. LIFX Wi-Fi requirements |
| Voice assistant commands | May stop working because the assistant or its cloud service needs internet. LIFX identifies voice commands as internet-dependent. LIFX Wi-Fi requirements |
| Automations | Behavior varies by product and where the automation runs. The cited manufacturer guidance does not establish one rule for all bulbs; check whether a particular schedule or automation runs locally or through an online service. |
| Firmware updates and initial setup | May require internet. LIFX says firmware updates require active internet, and setup requirements vary by product. LIFX Wi-Fi requirements; WiZ network requirements |
| Physical wall switch | Still turns power to the bulb on or off. When the switch cuts power, the bulb cannot respond to wireless commands until power is restored. IKEA notes that its bulbs can be operated with the main power switch. IKEA support |
How the connection type changes the answer
Direct Wi-Fi bulbs
A direct Wi-Fi bulb joins the home Wi-Fi network, so its local communication path depends on the router and network being available. LIFX documents basic local controls that can continue without internet, while remote control, voice commands, and firmware updates require active internet. That is a product-specific example, not a guarantee for every Wi-Fi bulb. LIFX Wi-Fi requirements
Bluetooth bulbs
Bluetooth can let a phone communicate directly with a bulb without using the home Wi-Fi network. Philips Hue lists Bluetooth as one communication option and describes it as in-room control. Range and available features depend on the product; Bluetooth should not be treated as equivalent to remote access from outside the home. Philips Hue: Bluetooth vs. Bridge

Hub-based Zigbee systems
A hub changes the connection path: bulbs communicate with the hub over Zigbee, while the hub connects to the home network for app access. Philips Hue says its Bridge creates a Zigbee network and connects to the router. IKEA describes its Zigbee lighting as a mesh and says its hub or gateway links lights to the app over home Wi-Fi. Philips Hue: Bluetooth vs. Bridge; IKEA support
IKEA support states that its DIRIGERA hub and TRÅDFRI gateway must connect to the Wi-Fi router, but do not need an actual internet connection for local control. The phone must remain on the same Wi-Fi network for the described local app control. A hub therefore can preserve some local functions during an internet outage, but it does not remove the need for a powered local network for that app-control path. IKEA support

Switch between RGB mode and white light mode via the APP to match any occasion.
- 【Scheduling and Group Control】 Automate daily routines, such as activating sunrise mode in the morning, dimming lights before bed. You can also add multiple bulbs to a group for convenient and quick control.
Check network requirements before buying or setting up
Wi-Fi band and signal strength are practical compatibility issues. Requirements are product-specific: WiZ’s setup instructions specify a 2.4 GHz b/g/n Wi-Fi network, and LIFX says its lights use 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. LIFX warns that weak signal can lead to timeouts, offline messages, or slow control. WiZ network requirements; LIFX Wi-Fi requirements

- Check the exact bulb’s Wi-Fi band and router requirements before purchase or setup.
- For local app control, make sure the router remains powered and the phone is connected to the required home network.
- Check whether the feature you care about—such as voice control, remote access, or an automation—needs an internet connection for that product.
- Keep the wall switch on if you want the bulb available to receive wireless commands.
Quick outage checks
- Confirm what is still powered. Check the bulb, router, and any hub. A bulb without power cannot receive a wireless command.
- Connect your phone to the home Wi-Fi. Local app control may require the phone and bulb or hub to be on the same local network.
- Try the feature you need locally. Test the app while at home; do not use remote access or a voice assistant as proof that local control is unavailable.
- Consult the model’s support guidance. Manufacturers specify which controls, setup steps, and integrations work without internet for their products.
