Connected systems, sensors, analytics, and automation can help teams plan work, spot equipment problems earlier, coordinate operations, and keep people away from some hazardous tasks. Those are potential benefits, not guaranteed results: value depends on the mine, the problem being addressed, and how well the company changes its processes and develops its workforce.
What does digital transformation mean in mining?
It means using digital systems to connect information and work across mine planning and operations—not simply buying new equipment or installing software. The International Energy Agency identifies applications including remote and automated mining, robotics, modelling, GPS and geographic information systems, sensors, and analytics. These tools can help teams see operating conditions, make decisions, and coordinate work across a mine.

Connectivity is a practical prerequisite. In its 2025 annual and sustainability report, Epiroc describes private LTE/4G/5G, digital radio, and Wi-Fi as communications infrastructure that supports digitalization, automation, and electrification in surface and underground operations. A mine’s terrain, depth, and operating conditions affect what coverage is feasible and how resilient it needs to be. Epiroc’s digitalization overview discusses these connectivity approaches.
Which operational problems can digital systems address?
Safety and exposure to hazards
Remote operation and automation can reduce the need for workers to be physically present in some hazardous areas. Collision-avoidance systems can provide another layer of support around moving equipment. These mechanisms may reduce exposure, but a vendor’s description of a system does not establish an independently measured safety improvement at every mine. Epiroc describes remote operation, collision avoidance, and automation as part of its approach to productivity and sustainability; the claims should be understood in that company-reported context. Epiroc’s automation overview also reports that its software was used by more than 3,900 driverless mining vehicles at year-end 2025. That is a company-reported deployment count, not a measure of safety gains.

Equipment uptime and maintenance
Sensors and analytics can help maintenance teams monitor equipment condition and plan work based on emerging signs of wear rather than relying only on fixed intervals or reacting after a breakdown. Hindustan Zinc reports deploying condition-based monitoring and predictive-maintenance capabilities. Its example shows an application in one company, not a guaranteed result across the industry. Hindustan Zinc’s FY2024–25 digitalization and automation report also records ₹18.77 crore invested in digital and automation efforts during that fiscal year; this is a company-specific figure, not an industry benchmark.
Productivity, planning, and coordination
Digital mine-planning tools, equipment data, and operational analytics can help teams coordinate tasks and identify constraints that slow production. Sandvik describes AutoMine automation, mine-planning software from Deswik, and digital support intended to improve uptime and productivity. These are company-reported capabilities and strategic aims; they do not establish a universal productivity gain. Sandvik’s 2024 annual report describes these offerings.

Energy and environmental performance
Digital monitoring can give operators information they can use to manage equipment and energy use, while automation and electrification may change how work is carried out. These are possible routes to environmental improvements, not proof that a digital project by itself reduces a mine’s environmental impact. The IEA’s estimate that digitalization could reduce operations and maintenance costs by 5% over the period to 2040, saving companies and consumers an average of close to USD 20 billion per year, concerns the broader energy sector—not mining companies alone. It should not be read as a mining-specific forecast. The IEA’s Digitalization and Energy report describes the estimate and the wider range of digital applications.
Why are companies investing if returns are not guaranteed?
Mining operations depend on costly equipment, coordinated work, and decisions made across complex sites. Digital systems offer a way to improve visibility and control over those operations. If a company can identify a maintenance issue sooner, coordinate equipment more effectively, or automate a task that exposes people to risk, the resulting operational improvement may justify the investment. The value case is specific to the problem, site, and implementation; adopting a technology is not itself evidence of a return.

Investment figures can indicate company priorities, but they should not be mistaken for proof of benefits. Sandvik reported SEK 5.1 billion in digital-offering revenue at year-end 2024 against a SEK 6.5 billion target for 2025. That revenue is company-wide, not mining-only. Sandvik’s 2024 digital-shift reporting gives those figures. They show the scale of one company’s digital business ambitions, not the financial return from digital transformation across mining.
What has to change beyond the technology?
Technology creates value only when it fits the work and people who must use it. Deloitte notes variation in digital maturity across mining companies and emphasizes strategy, operating models, change management, and data use. McKinsey’s analysis likewise argues that technology-enabled change requires changes to management systems, culture, and capabilities. Deloitte’s assessment of digital transformation in mining and McKinsey’s analysis of technology-enabled productivity change discuss these organizational requirements.

- Define the operating problem. Specify whether the priority is safety exposure, maintenance, planning, throughput, energy use, or another measurable need.
- Check site conditions and connectivity. Surface and underground operations differ, and digital systems need communications coverage that works reliably in the relevant areas.
- Plan for existing equipment and systems. Mines may have mixed fleets and legacy systems, so compatibility affects how well new tools can share data and support work.
- Set data governance and cybersecurity practices. Decide who can access operational data, how it is managed, and how connected systems will be protected.
- Prepare workers and managers. Training, clear responsibilities, communications, and change management help turn new information and workflows into routine practice.
- Track value against a baseline. Measure the operational outcome the project was intended to improve, rather than treating installation, data collection, or fleet size as proof of success.
How should a mine choose a digital approach?
There is no single package suited to every operation. Compare options against the conditions and objective at the specific site:

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Operating environment: Establish whether the work is surface or underground and what that means for communications, equipment, and worker access.
- Target outcome: Match the proposed system to a defined need such as safer work, better planning, more reliable equipment, or improved coordination.
- Connectivity and resilience: Confirm that communications reach the places where the system must operate and can support work when conditions are difficult.
- Integration: Assess whether the option can work with the mine’s existing fleet, software, and operating processes.
- Governance and security: Consider data access, system responsibilities, and cybersecurity alongside functionality.
- People and measurement: Check whether teams can operate the system and whether the expected benefit can be measured against current performance.
The sources describe varied applications and levels of maturity, rather than one universal solution. The right investment is therefore the one that addresses a real operational constraint and can be sustained through appropriate connectivity, integration, governance, and workforce support.
