What loremfile.dev provides
loremfile.dev is a hosted library of synthetic files for development and QA. The September 24, 2026 article described 228 files across 78 formats, including 19 edge-case files; the homepage currently lists 231 files. The project changelog records additions after the article, while the repository README still refers to 228 files and catalog version 1.2.0. These figures describe different project snapshots, not a single synchronized catalog count. The dated article, the current homepage, the repository README, and the changelog show those distinctions.

The homepage groups fixtures across documents, images, video, audio, text, web and data files, archives, fonts, binary files, calendar and mail formats, certificates, and edge cases. The collection includes both ordinary valid examples and deliberately malformed or truncated inputs. It is intended for test cases such as upload handling, MIME or file-type detection, parsing, data imports, office-document handling, media playback and seeking, HTTP range requests, and size boundaries. The catalogue describes available fixtures; it does not establish that they cover every real-world file or failure mode.

Start with the behavior under test, rather than choosing a file only by its extension. Use the catalog and manifest to check the relevant properties:

- Format and MIME type: Match both the expected format and the content type your application handles.
- Valid or malformed input: Choose an ordinary file for a success path, or a broken, truncated, or otherwise edge-case fixture for rejection and recovery behavior.
- Size and media properties: Check the listed file or media characteristics against the boundary, playback, or seek condition you need.
- HTTP behavior: If the test depends on cross-origin access or partial downloads, check the project’s stated CORS and byte-range support.
- Content integrity: Use the published manifest or sums file to verify that a downloaded file matches its expected SHA-256.
Because the files are synthetic, they are useful as controlled inputs but are not a substitute for representative production data, real customer documents, or a security review. Do not assume a passing test against a fixture proves that an application handles every genuine file a user may submit.
How to download and verify a file
The homepage provides curl, JavaScript, and Python examples. For a repeatable download, use the project’s documented canonical host and compare the downloaded bytes with the matching manifest entry:

- Find the fixture path in the catalog and note its expected SHA-256 value in the manifest or sums file.
- Download the published path using the language or command-line example on the homepage. Keep the path fixed in your test configuration rather than selecting a different file on each run.
- Verify the bytes by calculating the downloaded file’s SHA-256 and comparing it with the published value. A mismatch means the file received does not match that manifest entry; do not treat the expected hash as proof of service availability.
- For CI, cache the download where practical and use the project’s GitHub Action if its path selection and hash comparison suit your workflow.
The exact download code depends on the fixture path and language; use the current examples on the homepage rather than assuming that an example path or catalog count will remain unchanged.

What “stable URL” does—and does not—mean
The project README says, “The bytes at a published path do not change.” It also says availability is not promised and a file may be withdrawn for legal reasons. In practical terms, a stable path is intended to keep returning the same content when it is available; it is not an uptime guarantee. The project’s published hashes let you check content identity independently of that availability caveat. Read the repository README for the project’s wording.

Request limits and CI use
The homepage and September 2026 article advise keeping automated requests below 30 requests per second per IP. The repository README expresses its limit as 300 requests per 10 seconds per IP. Treat these as published rate guidance for the service, not as a target for routine test runs: cache fixtures in CI and avoid bursts of parallel downloads.
