To choose the address used for new messages, change the default sending account in Mail: on iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Apps > Mail > Composing > Default Account; on Mac, open Mail > Settings > Composing and choose an account beside Send new messages from. These controls choose the sender, not the app that opens when you tap an email link.
Set the default sending account on iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps > Mail > Composing > Default Account.
- Tap the email account you want Mail to use for new messages.
This menu path is reported by iDownloadBlog’s guide, updated September 24, 2026. Apple’s official support pages cited here document the separate default-email-app setting, not this sending-account path. Menu names can vary after software updates, so check the labels on your device if they differ.

Set the default sending account on Mac
- Open the Mail app.
- Choose Mail > Settings. On older macOS versions, this may be called Preferences.
- Select Composing.
- Beside Send new messages from, choose the account you want as the sender.
The same iDownloadBlog guide reports an Automatically select best account option. It selects an account based on the first recipient and the current mailbox rather than using one fixed sender. Choose a specific account if you need new messages to consistently show one address.

- Choose the address you want recipients to see as the sender.
- Consider which account is associated with the mailbox you are using, particularly if you enable automatic selection on Mac.
- Check the sender on an individual message when the account matters; the instructions cited here establish the default for new messages, but do not establish identical behavior for replies or messages started in other apps.
If you mean the app that opens email links
The default email account and the default email app are different settings. The account setting selects the sender for new mail. The app setting selects which application handles links that open an email message.
On iPhone or iPad
- Update to the latest iOS or iPadOS available for your device.
- Open Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Email.
- Select the email app you want to use and follow any additional on-screen steps.
Apple documents this setting in its guides to changing default apps for features on iPhone and iPad and changing default apps on iPhone. It controls the app used when opening links to send email, and an app must support the feature to appear. If the app you want is missing, Apple advises contacting its developer.

On Mac
- Install the email app you want to use.
- Open Mail and choose Mail > Settings (or Preferences on older versions).
- Select General.
- Choose the app beside Default email reader. If it is not listed, select Select and choose the app in the file dialog.
These steps come from Apple’s Mac instructions for changing the default web browser or email app. Mail may need an email account set up before you can change the reader; Apple says you may be able to remove or disable that account afterward. If you use webmail, choosing a browser may not make it open automatically for email links. Some browsers and webmail services have their own settings, so check those too.
