Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve delivers the fighter-jet spectacle and squadron drama of a Top Gun fantasy, according to reviewers, while keeping its flying firmly in arcade-action territory rather than realistic simulation. Its campaign pairs cinematic dogfights with ground and naval attacks; a separate online mode adds cooperative and competitive play. The game launches worldwide on October 2, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.

Does Ace Combat 8 fulfil the Top Gun fantasy?

For cinematic aerial action, reviewers say it does. Tom’s Guide highlights cockpit-camera storytelling, radio chatter, squadron camaraderie, and the rush of flying a modern fighter. Those elements make the game feel like a blockbuster flight adventure rather than a procedural military simulation.

The comparison has limits: Ace Combat 8 takes place in the fictional world of Strangereal, and its flight model is arcade-like. Tom’s Guide praises the sense of speed and spectacle, but also notes a tension between exhilarating action and the realities of war. The result is best approached as an action game with a military setting, not as a realistic depiction of combat.

What happens in the campaign?

The story begins after the Republic of Sotoa captures the capital of the Federation of Central Usea. You fly as the Wings of Theve alongside squadmates including Baxter, Tasha, and Coster. The premise gives the campaign a unit-level focus: missions are not just a sequence of targets, but part of a larger conflict experienced by a squadron.

ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE - PlayStation 5
  • ACE COMBAT 8 DELIVERS HIGH-OCTANE AERIAL ACTION! Step into the cockpit and take flight as an elite pilot across stunning skies. Enter intense dogfights, eliminate threats, and rise through gripping missions to earn your wings. The game is developed by PROJECT ACES, the acclaimed team behind the franchise.
  • AERIAL WARFARE IN LIVING SKIES. Campaign Mode showcases stunning visuals with dynamic multi-layered cloudscapes that capture the majesty of living skies. Feel the rush of a fast-paced arcade-style gameplay and deploy powerful weapons to dominate the battlefield.
  • A VISCERAL JOURNEY FROM COCKPIT TO GROUND. Beyond the chaos in the air, breathtaking first-person scenes reveal your pilot’s story through breathtaking cinematics. Experience the pressure of command, the weight of decisions, and the bonds forged in battle. Between missions, bond with your squad members, rise to meet adversity, and prove yourself as a true ace.

Bandai Namco describes a mix of dogfights, ground-support missions, and naval strikes. Before sorties, players can choose aircraft loadouts and special weapons; squad commands also shape how missions unfold. That variety gives the campaign room to move between air-to-air combat and attacks on targets below or at sea.

Tom’s Guide reports that the campaign runs for more than 30 missions, with individual missions often lasting 15 to 30 minutes and packing in multiple objectives and set pieces. Those are the reviewer’s observations, rather than a publisher-specified mission length. The review also notes a tutorial and a story-focused difficulty option, useful for players who want the narrative and spectacle without as much pressure from the combat.

How does the flying and control feel?

Tom’s Guide describes the game as built around controller play, with joystick and throttle pairing available as an option. That points to a clear distinction from simulator-first games: the intended appeal is responsive, cinematic flying rather than replicating the workload of piloting a real aircraft. The reviewed material does not establish compatibility for any particular joystick or throttle model.

PC Gamer’s review credits weather and changes in aircraft handling with adding texture to aerial combat. These are reviewer judgments about how the game plays, not a promise of simulation-level flight modeling. Expect weather and handling to affect the action, while the overall experience remains arcade-oriented.

What is ACE COMBAT ONLINE, and is there cross-play?

ACE COMBAT ONLINE is a separate online component, not simply another campaign chapter. Bandai Namco describes co-op and competitive activities, and says the Air Base hub supports up to 100 players. The publisher also describes cross-play. PC Gamer characterizes the online offering as including PvP, co-op, and special raid-boss encounters, and calls it a live-service mode; that assessment should not be read as a guarantee about how long seasonal content or services will continue.

Bandai Namco says the Ace Pass provides seasonal online rewards. Steam also lists a Deluxe Edition that includes the game, a customizable cosmetic set, and a Premium Ace Pass Plus Voucher, as well as separately purchasable downloadable content. These are digital edition and add-on details; check the store listing for the edition and content currently offered in your region.
