Same Claude, Different Harness: Why Terminal-Bench Results Can Change

Claude Opus 4.8 reportedly scored differently on Terminal-Bench 2.1 under two harnesses. The comparison illustrates why benchmark scores depend on the full agent setup, not just the model name.

Claude’s benchmark score is not determined by the model name alone. In a September 2026 article, Robert Imbeault reported that Claude Opus 4.8 scored 85.4% ± 0.8% on Terminal-Bench 2.1 using Backboard CLI, compared with a published 78.9% for Claude Code—a reported gap of 6.5 percentage points. The author’s figures are not independently verified here, so treat them as a reported comparison, not a definitive ranking of harnesses.

What the reported Terminal-Bench comparison says

Imbeault’s September 18, 2026 article attributes both results to the same underlying model, Claude Opus 4.8, but different software harnesses: Backboard CLI and Claude Code. It reports 85.4% ± 0.8% for Backboard CLI and cites a published 78.9% for Claude Code. The difference is 6.5 percentage points. The article’s direct page was unavailable for independent checking, so these should be described as the author’s reported results rather than independently verified leaderboard entries.

The reported Backboard CLI evaluation used 89 tasks, with five attempts per task, for 445 trials. The article says the run cost $280.72 and compares it with a reported $552.67 cost for a then-verified leader scoring 83.8%. Those costs and leaderboard standings are tied to the article’s reporting context and can become outdated; they are not a current price comparison or a guarantee of what a repeat run would cost.

Why the harness can change the score

A benchmark result belongs to the complete evaluated system, not just the model label. A harness governs how an agent receives instructions, interacts with tools, manages context, and proceeds through its agent loop. Differences in those choices can affect whether the model completes a task successfully, even when the underlying model is unchanged.

That is why “Claude Opus 4.8” alone is not enough information to reproduce or interpret a result. Provider, prompt, tools, context strategy, retry and recovery rules, and attempt count can all matter. Change any of them and the comparison is no longer a clean test of harness alone.

Other reported comparisons show why there is no universal winner

Across multiple agentic benchmarks

A Synopticon Research working paper, last updated May 11, 2026, reports a median absolute gap of 15.6 percentage points across 64 same-model harness pairs on nine agentic benchmarks. The paper assembled public-leaderboard data and defined pairs with aligned model versions and benchmark tasks; it excluded changes in reasoning effort, sample count, and skill toggles from its harness-pair definition. This is evidence that harness differences can be substantial in the collected comparisons, not a universal estimate for production tasks.

A different model and benchmark

For CORE-Bench Hard, the same working paper reports Claude Opus 4.5 at 42.2% with Princeton’s CORE-Agent and 77.8% with Claude Code. This involves a different model generation and benchmark from the Terminal-Bench 2.1 comparison, so it should not be read as confirmation of either Terminal-Bench score or as a direct cross-benchmark comparison.

A narrow coding-task counterexample

A GitHub-hosted report on a single Rails-generation task found that Opus 4.7 under opencode had better API correctness and lower reported cost than the tested Claude Code runs. Its authors explicitly caution that the prompt and task were narrow. It is a useful counterexample to the idea that one harness always wins, not enough evidence to rank tools generally.

How to compare harnesses fairly

To find out whether a harness helps with your workload, hold the model and benchmark conditions steady and make the remaining differences visible. A useful comparison records:

  • Model and provider: exact model version and the provider serving it.
  • Workload: benchmark version, task set, and any task-specific prompt changes.
  • Harness configuration: prompt, available tools, context handling, and agent-loop behavior.
  • Run policy: retries, recovery behavior, attempts per task, and total trial count.
  • Results: aggregate score, variation across attempts, and representative failure cases—not just the best run.
  • Cost accounting: cost measured over equivalent runs and time windows, with the accounting method stated.

Without those details, a score gap may reflect more than the harness being compared. Public benchmark results can also reward tuning for that benchmark, and success on a benchmark does not establish that the same setup will work better on an ordinary production task.

What to take from the numbers

The reported Terminal-Bench comparison is a reason to treat the harness as part of the system being evaluated. It is not proof that Backboard CLI is generally better than Claude Code, nor that a larger benchmark score guarantees better results for your own tasks. Synopticon’s analysis also found weak correlation between cost and score difference across 43 pairs with cost data, so higher spending should not be assumed to buy a larger harness gain.

For a practical decision, test the same model on representative tasks using the configurations you would actually deploy. Compare reliability, failure modes, and cost alongside the aggregate score; keep the setup aligned enough that you can tell which change produced the difference.
