Safer Alternatives to Prediction Markets for Learning Probability and Current Events

Practice forecasting current events without buying or selling event-contract shares. See how Metaculus, Good Judgment Open, and offline exercises differ.

You can practice probability and follow current events without buying or selling event-contract shares. Forecasting platforms such as Metaculus and Good Judgment Open ask you to estimate the likelihood of future events; when questions resolve, scoring and feedback give you a way to review your judgment. For a no-platform option, a classroom or study group can use the same forecast-and-review routine offline.

Forecasting is different from trading event contracts

A forecast is a probability estimate about a defined event. A prediction market involves contracts tied to outcomes: the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) describes event contracts as financial products, often structured around yes-or-no outcomes with fixed payouts and expiration dates. A contract price reflects traders’ perceived likelihood, but participating can mean losing the amount invested. Fees and taxes may also affect returns. The CFTC warns that “All speculation involves risk.” CFTC: Event contracts

The CFTC is a U.S. regulator, and its explainer describes regulated U.S. markets; it is not a complete account of every country’s laws or every platform. If legal access matters, check current local rules and official regulator information. The CFTC also advises customers to understand contract rules, risks, fees, settlement terms, and the provider’s identity and registration status.

What to use instead

Metaculus

Metaculus describes itself as an online forecasting platform and aggregation engine. Participants submit numerical probabilities to questions, and the platform aggregates forecasts using a recency-weighted median. Once questions resolve, forecasts receive scores. Its FAQ distinguishes this from prediction markets, where participants generally buy or sell shares using real or virtual currency. Metaculus calls forecasting “a systematic practice of attempting to answer questions about future events.” Metaculus FAQ

Metaculus also runs tournaments. Some offer cash prizes or medals, so do not assume every activity is prize-free: check the terms for the particular tournament or event before joining. Metaculus FAQ

Good Judgment Open

Good Judgment Open hosts public forecasting challenges on major political, economic, and technological events, and identifies Good Judgment as its operator. It can provide a way to practice on current-events questions without treating each forecast as a financial position. Before participating, check the challenge’s scoring method, rules, and any attached incentive. Good Judgment Open

Offline or classroom practice

A teacher, study group, or individual can practice without a forecasting platform: define a question and how it will be resolved, record probabilities and reasons with timestamps, then check the outcome against the stated source. This is a practical adaptation of forecasting techniques described by Metaculus, not a claim that a particular classroom method has been experimentally validated. How to make a useful forecast

The quality of the question matters. Before estimating a probability, make sure the event has a clear outcome, a stated resolution criterion, an information cutoff, and a time horizon. Metaculus says its questions are specified so participants can understand which outcomes count, and asks participants to submit precise probabilities. Metaculus FAQ

  1. Choose a resolvable question. Avoid vague prompts such as “Will the situation improve?” Prefer an event that can be checked against a clear criterion by a stated date.
  2. Write down the information available. Note the date and the relevant evidence before deciding. This timestamp helps distinguish a forecast made in advance from an explanation assembled after the result.
  3. Look for a base rate. Ask how often similar events have occurred. Metaculus recommends finding relevant base rates and breaking complex questions into smaller parts, so one dramatic headline does not dominate the estimate. Metaculus learning resources
  4. Give a number, not just a hunch. State a probability such as 30% or 70%. A precise estimate makes it possible to compare confidence with outcomes over time.
  5. Record why you might be wrong. Write the strongest counterargument or an alternative explanation. Metaculus recommends considering alternatives, listing reasons a forecast may be wrong, and using a devil’s advocate in group discussion. Metaculus learning resources
  6. Return after resolution. Compare the outcome with both your probability and your reasoning. Metaculus recommends reviewing successes as well as mistakes and treating feedback as useful information. Metaculus learning resources

Metaculus says steady quantitative feedback and regular practice can improve forecasting accuracy. That is the platform’s description, not an independently established effect size for an individual learner. It also reports that its forecasts were in the 99.5th percentile of the ACX prediction tournament in 2023 and the 97.7th percentile in 2024; those are Metaculus-reported results, not independent verification. How to compare platforms and activities

Forecasting services differ in how questions are selected and resolved, how performance is scored, and whether prizes or other incentives are offered. Access, privacy, and participation terms can also change; check each platform’s current policies rather than assuming that one service’s terms apply to another.

Option How you participate Feedback and incentives What to check
Metaculus Submit probabilities to questions; the platform aggregates forecasts using a recency-weighted median. Forecasts are scored after resolution. Some tournaments offer cash prizes or medals. Question resolution criteria and the terms of the particular tournament or activity. Metaculus FAQ
Good Judgment Open Join public challenges forecasting political, economic, and technological events. Scoring and incentives depend on the challenge; check its current rules. Challenge-specific scoring, rules, and any incentive. Good Judgment Open
Offline or classroom practice Record individual probabilities and rationales against a shared, clearly defined question. Compare forecasts with resolved outcomes using a stated source; no platform incentive is required. Question wording, timestamps, resolution source, and a consistent review process. Metaculus FAQ Metaculus learning resources
Event-contract market Buy or sell contracts tied to event outcomes. Contracts can pay out for a correct outcome and lose value or the investment if wrong; fees and taxes may affect returns. Contract terms, risks, fees, settlement, provider status, and applicable local rules. CFTC: Event contracts

What forecasting practice can—and cannot—tell you

Repeated forecasts with clear resolution criteria and feedback can help you examine how well your confidence matches outcomes. Metaculus illustrates calibration by saying that when its forecast is 70% likely, the event occurs roughly 70% of the time. That is the platform’s reported illustration, not a promise about an individual question or a guarantee that a crowd estimate will be right. Metaculus on its forecasting performance

A platform estimate is still an estimate, not certainty. For decisions involving money, safety, or other serious consequences, consider the underlying evidence and the limits of the question as well as the aggregate probability.
