AI money-management apps are not inherently safe or unsafe. The key questions are what financial information an app can access, how the provider and its service partners use and retain that information, whether it reaches an AI model, and what safeguards protect it. Check the specific app’s privacy policy, AI terms, and bank-authorization screen before linking an account; the “AI” label alone does not answer any of those questions.
What financial data might an app access?
Linking an account can expose more than a balance. Depending on the app and the authorization you grant, information may include account identifiers, balances, transaction histories, payment history, and purchases. An AI feature may also process information you type into a chat, along with insights or summaries derived from account activity.

In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission’s guide to the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA) describes nonpublic personal information as personally identifiable financial information collected by a covered financial institution while providing a financial product or service, unless the information is publicly available. Examples include account numbers, payment history, balances, and card purchases. Whether a particular app or provider is covered depends on its business activities and other facts—not simply on whether it offers budgeting tools. FTC: Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act

- Collection: Which identity, account, balance, and transaction fields does the app collect, and are they necessary for the feature you want?
- AI processing: Does the app send financial data or chat prompts to an AI model or another service provider? Are prompts, inputs, or outputs used to develop or improve models?
- Retention and deletion: How long are raw account data, prompts, and derived insights kept? What can you delete, and does deletion extend to copies held by service providers?

The FTC says companies must honor privacy commitments made in policies, terms, promotional materials, and other customer-facing channels. It has warned that using or retaining consumer data for other purposes without clear notice and affirmative express consent can create enforcement risk. As the FTC put it in January 2024, “There is no AI exemption from the laws on the books.” That guidance is a reason to scrutinize a provider’s disclosures; it does not establish what any particular money-management app does. FTC: AI companies must uphold privacy and confidentiality commitments
Security and privacy are different questions
Security is about protecting information from unauthorized access—for example, through encryption, account-access controls, and secure servers. Privacy is about what information is collected, shared, retained, or used, including for AI development. A provider can describe security measures without answering every privacy question, and a limited data-use policy does not by itself demonstrate strong security.

The FTC’s app-security guidance says, “There is no checklist for securing all apps.” It recommends taking stock of what an app collects and retains, avoiding unnecessary data, protecting information on devices and servers, and considering the security of third-party code. The guidance dates to May 2017, so treat it as general advice rather than a current technical audit of any app. FTC: Mobile App Developers—Start with Security

There is no basis for assuming every AI budgeting or money-management app follows the same rules. In the United States, GLBA coverage depends on whether a business is significantly engaged in specified financial activities and on other facts. The FTC’s Safeguards Rule applies to covered financial institutions, with scope qualifications and exemptions. For those covered, the rule describes a written information security program suited to the business and the sensitivity of the information, with measures that include encryption, assessing apps used to store or transmit customer information, multi-factor authentication, and secure disposal. Those are obligations where the rule applies—not a consumer checklist that guarantees an app is safe. FTC: Safeguards Rule—What Your Business Needs to Know

Another U.S. rule relevant to access to personal financial data has had changing compliance dates. The CFPB’s Personal Financial Data Rights page says a court stayed the rule’s compliance dates on October 29, 2025, and that the CFPB had announced possible amendments and plans to propose extending the dates. The page was last modified January 6, 2026. Because this status can change, consult the CFPB’s current page rather than relying on older descriptions of when compliance is required. How to assess an app before linking an account
- Read the authorization screen. Identify which accounts and data are requested, whether access is read-only, and whether the authorization includes functions beyond viewing activity.
- Find the account connection details. Check how the app connects to your bank and what happens to access after you disconnect the app. If the policy or authorization screen does not explain this, ask the provider before proceeding.
- Review the privacy policy and AI terms. Search for account data, prompts, model training or improvement, service providers, sharing, retention, and deletion. Look for separate treatment of raw data, AI inputs and outputs, and derived insights.
- Check security disclosures. Look for information about encryption, authentication, incident handling, and the security of providers that process data. Treat broad claims such as “bank-level security” as incomplete unless the provider explains the relevant controls.
- Match claims to your location. Check which privacy rights and financial rules apply where you live, and whether the provider explains its claimed regulatory status in terms that cover its actual service.
- Limit exposure where possible. Link only the accounts needed for the feature, avoid entering sensitive details into chat unless necessary, and use available deletion or disconnection controls when you stop using the service.
If a provider does not explain whether prompts or financial information are used to improve models, how long the data are retained, or what happens after disconnection, treat that as an unanswered question—not as evidence that the practice is safe or unsafe.

What published figures can—and cannot—tell you
A CFPB working paper examined a dataset of 6,458 unique financial institutions. Within that paper’s dataset, 11% of app-owning financial firms shared data with third parties, and 1% did not encrypt data in transit. These figures describe firms in that dataset, not the current prevalence of those practices among AI money-management apps. They are not a substitute for checking an individual provider’s disclosures. CFPB: Data Spotlight on how financial institutions use and protect consumer data
