Rust, Tauri, and React 2FA Authenticator: Key Design Choices for a Zero-Knowledge Vault

A TOTP app must access account secrets to generate codes. Here is what a zero-knowledge claim requires, how to constrain the Tauri IPC boundary, and how TOTP differs from WebAuthn.

A Rust, Tauri, and React authenticator can keep a synced vault unreadable to its server only if the user’s device controls the decryption key—and the app still has to access each shared secret locally to generate a code. A secondary article about OtpVault reports use of AES-256-GCM and Argon2id, but those reported choices do not independently establish that its design is zero-knowledge or secure. The article’s description is a starting point for examining the design, not an audited implementation to reproduce blindly.

What the authenticator must do

A TOTP authenticator stores a shared secret for each account and uses it with the current time to calculate a short-lived one-time password. The algorithm is specified in RFC 6238; it is related to HOTP, which uses a counter instead of time. The totp-rfc Rust crate documentation describes support for both algorithms and lists HMAC-SHA-1, HMAC-SHA-256, HMAC-SHA-512, and six-, seven-, or eight-digit outputs. These are crate-supported options, not evidence of which settings OtpVault uses.

That shared secret is the sensitive asset. A displayed code is temporary, but anyone who obtains the underlying secret can generally generate codes for that account. A secure design therefore has to protect the secret across its lifecycle: enrollment, local storage, unlock, code generation, backup or synchronization, and removal.

What “zero-knowledge” can—and cannot—mean here

For a cloud-synced vault, the useful claim is usually that the service cannot decrypt the stored account secrets because it does not possess the decryption key. That is narrower than saying the app never handles plaintext. To calculate a TOTP code, a working client must access the account’s shared secret in usable form at least briefly.

The OtpVault description reports AES-256-GCM for encryption and Argon2id for key derivation. Those names alone do not prove that a service cannot read the vault. The claim depends on details such as how the user’s unlock input becomes a key, whether the server ever receives that key or plaintext, how encryption nonces and authentication are handled, and whether decrypted data is exposed through logs, backups, crash reports, or the interface. The secondary description does not establish those implementation details or provide an independent security audit.

Questions a build should answer

  • Who can decrypt? Identify whether the key is derived or unlocked only on the user’s device, and whether any server-side component can recover it.
  • What is encrypted? Specify whether the vault payload includes every account secret and any associated metadata that could reveal account relationships.
  • When does plaintext exist? Map the moments when secrets are present in memory, passed between Rust and the WebView, displayed, or copied.
  • How does recovery work? Explain what happens if the user forgets the unlock credential or loses every device. If recovery makes the vault accessible to a service, that changes the zero-knowledge claim.

These are design and verification questions, not claims about OtpVault’s actual answers.

Separate the Rust core from the React WebView

Tauri treats its Rust core and frontend WebView as different trust groups. The IPC bridge connects them, and capabilities determine which core commands the WebView is allowed to invoke. Tauri also cautions that application security depends on Tauri, Rust and npm dependencies, application code, and the devices running the app. Its v2 security documentation is the relevant reference for this boundary.

For an authenticator, keep privileged work behind narrow Rust commands and treat every IPC argument as untrusted input. For example, a command that returns a code for a selected account is a smaller interface than one that lets the WebView request arbitrary vault data or invoke general-purpose cryptographic operations. Validate identifiers and parameters at the command boundary, and configure capabilities so the WebView can call only the commands it needs.

Minimize secret exposure in React

  • Keep vault decryption and TOTP generation in the core where practical, rather than retaining all decrypted secrets in long-lived React state.
  • Return only the data the current view needs. A code display does not ordinarily need the underlying shared secret.
  • Consider how copy actions, UI state, debugging output, error handling, and browser-visible storage could expose data.
  • Document which values cross IPC and why; the bridge is a security boundary, not merely an implementation detail.

This is a design approach, not a description of the unverified OtpVault command architecture.

A practical build sequence

  1. Define the threat model. Decide whether the goal is to protect a local device, prevent a sync service from reading vault contents, or both. State what happens when the device is compromised or unlocked.
  2. Implement and verify TOTP behavior. Choose the algorithm and output parameters required by the accounts you intend to support, then test against the applicable standard and known test vectors. Do not infer OtpVault’s choices from the crate documentation.
  3. Design the encrypted vault lifecycle. Specify enrollment, encryption, unlock, code generation, lock, backup or sync, and deletion before wiring up the UI. Record exactly when plaintext secrets are available.
  4. Keep the IPC surface narrow. Define explicit commands and payloads, validate inputs in Rust, and grant the WebView only the capabilities those commands require.
  5. Review dependencies and data paths. Inspect the Rust and JavaScript dependency set and check whether secrets reach logs, telemetry, crash reporting, clipboard history, or persistent frontend storage.
  6. Document recovery and limitations. Explain what users can recover, what they cannot, and what account-level backup codes or alternate sign-in methods they should preserve.

This sequence provides a way to reason about a Rust/Tauri/React authenticator; the available OtpVault coverage does not establish that the project followed these steps.

TOTP and WebAuthn solve different problems

TOTP is a shared-secret method: both the account service and authenticator rely on a secret from which valid codes can be generated. WebAuthn uses public-key credentials scoped to a relying party and bound to authenticators. The W3C Web Authentication specification describes that public-key model; the webauthn-rs documentation outlines the server, browser, and authenticator roles.

Factor Credential model Practical distinction
TOTP app Shared secret used to generate time-based codes Useful where services offer codes, but entering a code does not by itself make a login phishing-resistant.
WebAuthn security key or passkey Public-key credential associated with a relying party A distinct authentication method; implementation depends on service and authenticator support.

The Rust Project’s policy for its own critical systems ranks FIDO2/WebAuthn security keys first, hardware-enabled WebAuthn passkeys second, and TOTP apps third, advising privileged users to choose the strongest method supported by the service. That is policy for the Rust Project’s context, not a universal ranking for every organization. Rust Project MFA policy.

A hardware security key is an optional alternative for accounts that support WebAuthn, not a requirement for building or using a TOTP authenticator. The webauthn-rs documentation names YubiKeys as examples of security keys and cautions that user verification may not be guaranteed by the key.
