To factory-reset an unlocked Samsung Galaxy A12, back up anything you want to keep, confirm the Google Account credentials and screen-lock code used on the phone, then go to Settings > General management > Reset > Factory data reset. Tap Reset and follow the prompts. The process erases data stored on the phone, and Google may ask you to verify ownership during setup afterward.
Before you reset the Galaxy A12
Back up what you want to keep
A factory reset deletes data stored on the phone, including personal data, customized settings, downloaded apps, messages, contacts, and photos. Back up or transfer important files first, then verify that the backup finished. Google notes that data saved in a Google Account may be restored, but apps and their data are uninstalled from the device. See Google’s Android reset guidance and Samsung’s reset guidance.

Check your account and screen lock
Before starting, make sure you know the Google Account username and password previously used on the A12, as well as its screen-lock PIN, pattern, or password. If you recently changed the Google Account password, Google advises waiting 24 hours before resetting. Its general Android guidance also recommends charging the phone to at least 70% and connecting to Wi-Fi or a mobile network; it says a reset may take up to an hour. These are general Android recommendations, not A12-specific guarantees. Google explains the preparation steps here.

Understand Factory Reset Protection before setup
Factory Reset Protection (FRP) is an ownership check, not a reset shortcut. The A12 manual says that adding a Google Account activates FRP and that account credentials are needed to use the phone after a factory reset. Google says a protected phone may ask for its screen lock or for a Google Account previously added and synced to the device. If you cannot provide the requested credentials, the phone cannot be used at setup until you recover account access. Google’s device-protection guidance describes the verification requirement.

If you own the phone but cannot access the account, use Google Account recovery or contact Samsung through an authorized support route. Samsung UK advises locked-out customers to bring proof of purchase to an authorized service center. Do not treat FRP-bypass instructions as a normal reset procedure.

Prepare the A12 for sale or transfer
Remove your Google Account from the phone before resetting it if you are handing it to someone else. Samsung says this removes Google FRP for the transfer. Its example route for Android Nougat and later is Settings > Accounts and backup > Manage accounts > Google Account > Remove account. Labels may differ by software version; the A12 manual also says removing all Google Accounts disables FRP. Then perform the Settings reset described above. Samsung’s instructions cover account removal and reset.
Choose another reset route only if its requirements fit
| Route | When it may work | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Settings reset | You can unlock the phone and open Settings. | The A12 manual documents this route; back up first and expect an ownership check during setup if FRP applies. |
| Button-based reset | Settings cannot be opened, including in some lockout situations. | Samsung and Google describe button-based resets generally, but the exact sequence can depend on the A12 variant and software. Verify current instructions for your exact model rather than guessing. Google or Samsung may request credentials afterward. Google’s general guidance; Samsung support. |
| Remote erase with SmartThings Find | The phone is online, signed in to a Samsung Account, and remote-control settings are enabled. | This option is conditional and will not work if the required account, connection, or settings are absent. Samsung’s reset page. |
If Settings is available, use the documented A12 menu route rather than a button sequence. For a button reset, consult current Samsung instructions for the precise model and software; the available A12 manual information does not establish one sequence that applies to every variant.

Factory reset versus restart
A soft reset is simply restarting or powering the phone off and on; it does not erase long-term stored data. A hard reset or factory reset restores factory settings and permanently erases data on the device. If you are troubleshooting a problem that may be caused by a third-party app, Samsung recommends trying Safe Mode before wiping the phone. Samsung explains reset types and troubleshooting.
