Those figures are not a guarantee for every server: map size, player capacity and workload change what you need. Decide whether you will self-host or rent a managed server, then check the exact plan against your intended map, players, plugins and network setup.
What are the requirements to host a Rust server?
Facepunch’s Creating a server guide lists a Windows-, Linux- or macOS-based system, 12 GB of free RAM and 15 GB of free disk space as a baseline. It strongly prefers SSD or NVMe storage. Facepunch cautions that the figures vary with the use case and server population, so treat them as a starting point rather than a guarantee for a large, busy or modded server.
These are dedicated-server requirements, not the specifications for the PC used to play Rust. The official guide does not provide a universal CPU model, bandwidth minimum or formula mapping player counts to RAM. It says larger maps require more memory and disk space, while higher player capacity calls for a faster CPU.
Map size and player capacity are workload choices
The guide documents world-size settings from 1000 to 6000. Its example launch command uses a world size of 4000 and a maximum of 10 players; those are setup examples, not recommended specifications or a hosting tier. Choose your map and player limit based on the community you intend to serve, then verify that the machine or plan can handle that workload. Plugins and other changes may add demands, but the official documentation does not quantify them.

Storage and operating system
Use the free-space figure as a minimum reference, not as a total-drive recommendation: maps, saves, server files and backups all consume space. The guide favors SSD/NVMe performance but does not prescribe a drive capacity for every setup. Facepunch lists Windows, Linux and macOS as supported system families; check its current installation instructions and your host’s supported operating systems rather than relying on an older, dated minimum-version statement.
Should you self-host or rent a managed server?
Self-hosting offers control over the machine and configuration, but you are responsible for installing and updating the server, maintaining the operating system, configuring firewall rules and ports, and keeping a reliable public network path. Facepunch describes installation and updates through SteamCMD in its server setup guide. If the machine is behind a home router, public access may require port forwarding.

A managed game-server service can reduce the operating-system and network administration you handle, to the extent the provider actually manages those tasks. It does not remove the need to select an appropriate workload, configure the game, or check what the plan includes. Compare offers on the following points:
- Workload fit: included memory, CPU limits or performance information, storage type and capacity, player slots, map-change support, and plugin support.
- Administration: what the provider updates and maintains, and whether you get root access, supported tools or only managed controls.
- Network: server region and latency, access to the ports you need, query-port visibility, Rust+ support and the provider’s DDoS response.
- Continuity: backup frequency, restore controls, update and restart handling, and support availability.
- Total cost and exit terms: renewal pricing, extra charges for memory, storage or IPs, and cancellation terms.
This is a comparison checklist, not a claim that every provider offers every feature. Check current specifications and terms directly. Facepunch mentions OVH GAME servers in a guide for an advanced hidden-server scenario; that example is not a general endorsement or proof that an ordinary community needs that infrastructure. Its hidden-server guide discusses strong DDoS protection and the ability to change IPs quickly for that particular risk profile, but no host can be assumed attack-proof.

Which ports and network settings does a public server need?
A public setup needs the game port and query port configured with the right protocols. Facepunch documents both as UDP; the query port must be accessible for server-browser visibility and cannot be the same as the game port. RCON uses TCP. The guide’s example uses game port 28015/UDP and RCON port 28016/TCP. If you do not explicitly set a query port, it defaults to one above the larger of the game or RCON port.
Do not copy example ports blindly: verify the actual values configured in the server and allowed by the provider or firewall. On a home network, Facepunch says port forwarding is likely necessary for public access and recommends a static local address for the server. Open only the ports and protocols required for the features you use, rather than broadly exposing services.

Rust+ is optional and needs an additional listener
If you want Rust+ companion features, the Rust Companion Server needs an internet-reachable TCP port. Facepunch gives its default as the game port plus 67 or the RCON port plus 67, whichever is greater; with the guide’s example defaults, that is 28082. See the Rust+ Server instructions for setup details.
Keep the server’s companion.id with the server and its backups. Facepunch says not to share it, reuse it across servers or delete it casually: it represents that server’s Rust+ identity.

Hiding a server is not a substitute for network security
Facepunch’s advanced hidden-server guide is for operators trying to reduce public discovery and attack exposure. In the described setup, Rust has no built-in whitelist; the guide discusses alternatives such as a uMod plugin or skip-queue approach. Query-port access can make a server visible to server-list systems, but hiding that port does not guarantee secrecy or prevent attacks. The guide warns that IP leakage remains likely.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What changes if you use a custom map or plugins?
Custom maps need a separate download host
Remote players download a custom map from its URL, not from the Rust game server. Facepunch requires a direct download URL that remains available; a page that makes users click through is not sufficient. Confirm that your chosen host lets you set the map URL and that the external file host is reliable. For a custom-map setup, remove procedural map arguments such as server.worldsize and server.seed. Follow the custom-map hosting instructions.
Plugins add update work
Facepunch’s server guide notes that Oxide/uMod must be updated after server updates. It also warns that running SteamCMD in a startup script can revert files to vanilla. If plugins matter to your server, check how a managed provider handles framework updates and recovery before buying; with self-hosting, include that work in your maintenance plan.
How much RAM does a Rust server need?
The official baseline is 12 GB of free RAM, but Facepunch explicitly says requirements are not fixed. Larger maps need more memory, and the documentation offers no authoritative RAM-per-player equation or sizing table. It also does not establish a guaranteed tier for modded servers.
