For work, personal, client, or other ongoing identities, create a separate browser profile for each context. Profiles keep cookies and sign-ins apart along with broader browser data such as history, bookmarks, and settings. If you need two accounts on the same site inside Firefox, Multi-Account Containers can separate their cookies and site data without requiring another full profile. Use a guest session for temporary browsing, not a reusable identity. None of these options is a password barrier against someone who can use your device.
Choose the right kind of separation
The useful distinction is how much browser data you want separated and whether you need to reuse the session. A profile is the broadest practical choice for a persistent identity; Firefox containers are narrower; Edge guest mode is temporary.

Vendor documentation: Google Chrome Help on multiple profiles, Mozilla Support on Firefox profiles (updated June 12, 2026), and Microsoft Support on Edge profiles and guest mode. Firefox’s profile interface is rolling out gradually, so the available controls may differ by installation.

- Create one profile per ongoing identity. In Chrome, use the profile control to add a profile; Chrome supports names, photos, and color schemes to make the active context recognizable. In Firefox, use profile management and, if useful, profile selection at startup. Exact interface availability can vary, and Mozilla says its new profile system is rolling out gradually.
- Give each profile an unmistakable label. Names such as “Work” and “Personal,” paired with distinct colors or photos where available, reduce the chance of signing into an account in the wrong context.
- Check the active profile before signing into a site or the browser itself. A Google Account sign-in to Chrome can save bookmarks, passwords, and other settings to that account and make them available on other signed-in devices. Firefox profiles are local by default; they do not automatically sync or sign you into an account. Configure Firefox Sync separately if you want syncing.
- Keep each identity’s site sign-ins in its own profile. Open the profile that matches the account before visiting the site. This preserves separate cookies and sessions without repeatedly signing out and back in across identities.

Use Firefox containers for multiple accounts in one profile
If you want to remain in one Firefox profile but keep separate logins for the same website, assign each account context to a different Multi-Account Container. Mozilla summarizes the distinction this way: “Profiles separate all data (bookmarks, settings, add-ons). Containers separate only cookies, logins and site data inside one profile.” Containers are therefore useful for account-level separation, but they are not a substitute for a separate browser environment when you also want different history, bookmarks, settings, or extensions.

Use Edge guest mode for a temporary session
Choose Edge guest mode when you need a fresh temporary context rather than a profile to reuse. Microsoft says guest browsing does not retain browsing history, download history, or cookies and site data after all guest windows are closed. Files downloaded during the session are still saved on the device, so guest mode does not remove those files.

Understand what profile separation does—and does not—protect
Profiles organize and separate browser data; they do not prevent another person with access to the same device from opening another profile. Google warns, “If someone has your device, they can switch to any other Chrome profile on it.” Treat profile names and colors as context cues, not access controls. The documented separation here also does not establish protection from device-level access, malware, malicious extensions, or online tracking generally.

Edge session-only cookie policy
For administrators or users relying on Edge’s CookiesSessionOnlyForUrls policy, check startup restoration settings as well. Microsoft documents that when Edge is configured to restore URLs from previous sessions, the session-only cookie policy is ignored for those sites and cookies are stored permanently. Before deleting a profile
Check what is stored locally and what is synced before removing a profile. Removing a Chrome profile erases its bookmarks, history, passwords, and other settings from that computer. Removing an Edge profile permanently deletes that profile’s browsing data stored on the device, while synced data may still remain in the account’s cloud storage. Consult Google Chrome Help or Microsoft Support for the browser’s current profile controls and details.
