A logo maker’s “free” option may let you design and preview a logo without letting you download a production-ready file. Before choosing one, check three separate things: what you can download, what format and resolution it comes in, and whether the applicable terms allow your intended use. Current examples vary: Shopify says its Logo Maker provides a free ZIP of PNG files, Wix offers a low-resolution JPG sample and puts higher-quality exports in paid plans, and Looka says its design and preview are free but downloads require purchase.
What “free” can mean
Logo makers may let you create, edit, preview, or save a design without charge, while charging for the files you need to use it. A preview or sample is not necessarily a usable final asset. Looka’s help article says users can design, edit, preview, and save logos for free, but must purchase assets to download and use a logo. Wix describes its free sample as one low-resolution JPG. Shopify’s July 2, 2026 guide, by contrast, says its Logo Maker is free and supplies a downloadable ZIP of PNG files.

What the documented options include
| Maker | Free option described | Paid option or limitation | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wix | One low-resolution JPG sample. | Basic lists one logo design, eight 3000 × 3000 PNG files, and commercial usage rights. Advanced adds resizable SVGs and versions for social media, email signatures, watermarks, and app stores. Wix says its logo SVGs have transparent backgrounds. Basic, Advanced, and Brand Plus are described as one-time purchases; Brand Plus is not yet available to everyone. | Wix’s listed plan terms, price, and availability in your location. Its plan documentation describes the paid plans as including “Full commercial usage rights to your logo.” |
| Looka | Design, edit, preview, and save free, according to a help article dated September 24, 2021. | The same article says downloads require purchase and lists $20 USD for one PNG and $65 USD for a multi-file package. | The prices are from a 2021 article, not verified current prices. Check current checkout terms and included files. |
| Shopify Logo Maker | Shopify’s guide dated July 2, 2026 says the tool, formerly Hatchful, is free and provides a ZIP of PNG files in different versions. The guide describes more than 13,000 template possibilities. | The guide says paid premium templates are available in the app; it does not establish a universal paid bundle. | Confirm current tool terms, included files, and rights directly before relying on them. The cited guide is Shopify editorial content. |
| Canva and Adobe Express | Both have official logo-maker pages. | Current plan-level export and licensing details are not established here. | Check the specific plan, export formats, and asset license before choosing either. |
Plan names and feature descriptions can change. Wix’s listed details are vendor statements, and availability and checkout terms may vary by location. Looka’s figures are historical rather than reliable current quotes.

Which file do you need?
PNG for many digital placements
PNG is a raster image. A sufficiently large PNG can work well for a website, presentation, or profile image when it is displayed at a modest size. Check its pixel dimensions and whether the background is transparent if you need to place the logo over a colored surface. A file that looks fine in a preview may become blurry when enlarged.
SVG when scaling or printing matters
SVG is a vector format that can scale without the same pixelation as a raster image. If you expect to resize a mark substantially or send it for print, find out whether a resizable vector file is included. Wix recommends its SVG-including plans for printing and says its logo SVGs have transparent backgrounds. That is Wix’s guidance about its own exports, not a guarantee about every maker’s SVG.

Variants and supporting files
Consider whether you need alternate colors or layouts, a monochrome version, social-media crops, an email-signature file, or a watermark. These extras can save time, but they are separate from the core logo file. Wix’s Advanced plan lists several use-specific versions; other providers’ bundles should be checked individually.

Do not infer commercial permission from the word “free.” Read the license for the exact plan and the assets used in the design, including icons and fonts. Wix lists commercial usage rights for its paid plans. Looka’s 2021 help article says purchase is required to download and use a logo. Shopify’s guide says ownership depends on the tool’s terms, but the guide alone does not establish current rights for every output. Where terms are unclear, check the provider’s current license before putting the logo on a business website, packaging, or merchandise.

How to compare the real cost
- Define the use. List where the logo will appear: for example, a website, social profile, printed materials, packaging, or merchandise.
- Specify the deliverable. Decide whether a raster PNG is enough or whether you need a resizable SVG, transparent background, alternate layouts, or platform-specific versions.
- Read the license. Confirm commercial-use permission for the plan and the design assets, rather than assuming an export is automatically cleared for every purpose.
- Compare the complete bundle. Count the files, edits, and variants included, and separate logo deliverables from bundled brand-kit or website features.
- Check the actual checkout total. Confirm the current price, billing model, availability, and any location-specific terms. Do not use old published prices as current quotes.
A one-time logo purchase and a bundle that also includes brand or website features are not directly comparable. Match the plan to the files and rights you actually need.

An online maker can suit someone who needs a quick, affordable starting point. If originality, differentiation, or a broader brand strategy is important, working with a designer may be a better fit. That is a decision about priorities, not a measured claim that one route always produces a better result.
