Yes. Runway Dev exposes both models through an API. Use the model ID gen4.5 for new text-to-video or image-to-video generation, and aleph2 for in-context video editing. You need a Runway Dev account, and you can submit jobs with the official SDK or HTTPS. The practical differences are the input each model expects, the project quotas that apply, and the output-format surcharges.

What the Runway API exposes

Runway’s developer service treats Gen-4.5 and Aleph 2.0 as separate API models. A request identifies the model explicitly, so your application can route creative generation and editing jobs differently rather than relying on a web-app preset.

Model ID Primary task Input concept
gen4.5 Generate a new clip from text, or animate an image Text prompt alone, or text plus an input image
aleph2 In-context video editing An existing video that the model edits according to your instruction

Runway describes Gen-4.5 as capable of generating from text alone; an input image is not mandatory for that mode. Aleph 2.0 is not presented as a blank-canvas text-to-video model. Its workflow starts with a source video and applies an edit in context.

How to call Gen-4.5

Account and transport

Create or use a Runway Dev account, install the official SDK if it fits your stack, or send HTTPS requests directly. The getting-started example submits a video-generation request to https://api.dev.runwayml.com/v1/image_to_video. Despite the endpoint name, Gen-4.5 text-to-video is enabled by leaving out promptImage.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Core request fields

A representative Gen-4.5 request includes these fields:

  • model: set to gen4.5.
  • promptText: the natural-language description of the scene and motion.
  • ratio: one of the ratios supported for the selected mode.
  • duration: the requested clip length accepted by the API.
  • promptImage: include an image reference for image-to-video; omit it for text-to-video.

The following illustrates the text-only shape without an image input:

{
  "model": "gen4.5",
  "promptText": "A slow aerial move over a misty pine forest at sunrise",
  "ratio": "1280:720",
  "duration": 5
}

Use the authentication and job-polling conventions from the SDK or the current API guide. The material available here specifies the request fields and endpoint, but does not establish a universal duration range for Gen-4.5, so treat duration as a validated API parameter rather than assuming that every number of seconds is accepted.

How Aleph 2.0 differs

Aleph 2.0, identified as aleph2, is designed for in-context edits. Your application supplies a source video and an instruction describing the change, such as replacing an object, altering a visual treatment, or extending an edit while preserving the surrounding context. The source clip is therefore a hard prerequisite; a text prompt with no video is not the documented Aleph workflow.

Input videos must be between 2 and 30 seconds long, encoded at 30 frames per second or lower, and no larger than 1080p. Aleph preserves the input-video resolution up to that 1080p ceiling. If your source is longer, higher-frame-rate, or higher-resolution, transcode it before submission and verify the resulting metadata.

The supplied material does not state a separate Aleph output-duration range beyond the 2–30-second input requirement. Plan around the source clip’s duration and confirm the response for the specific operation you are automating.

Inputs, ratios, and file-transfer limits

Gen-4.5 dimensions

Gen-4.5 text-to-video supports two dimensions: 1280×720 landscape and 720×1280 portrait. Image-to-video supports a broader set:

How to provide media

Images, videos, and audio can be supplied as HTTPS URLs or base64 data URIs. The transport limits are different:

Asset HTTPS URL limit Base64 data-URI limit
Image 16 MB 5 MB
Video 32 MB 16 MB
Audio 32 MB 16 MB

Remote URLs must use HTTPS, contain a domain name, and return valid Content-Type and Content-Length headers. Runway does not follow redirects. A signed URL that redirects through a download service, omits the length header, or expires before the job starts can fail even when the file itself is valid.

API pricing per second

Runway Dev lists model rates for 2026. These are base generation charges before professional-format or HDR surcharges.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Model Base rate What the rate covers
Gen-4.5 $0.12 per second Generation time for the Gen-4.5 model
Aleph 2.0 $0.28 per second Editing time for the Aleph 2.0 model

For a simple estimate, multiply the clip duration in seconds by the applicable rate. A five-second Gen-4.5 render has a $0.60 base charge, while a five-second Aleph 2.0 edit has a $1.40 base charge. Actual billing can be higher when you select a professional or HDR delivery profile.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Professional and HDR surcharges

  • ProRes and PNG-sequence output add 5 credits per second.
  • 10-bit SDR and HDR profiles add 20 credits per second.
  • When the output exceeds roughly 4 megapixels, the 10-bit SDR/HDR surcharge rises to 40 credits per second.

The model rates are stated in dollars per second, while these format additions are stated in credits per second. The available material does not provide a dollar conversion for credits, so do not fold the surcharge into a dollar estimate without checking the account’s current credit valuation.

Project quotas, concurrency, and automatic tiers

Limits are enforced per model and per project. The daily-generation and monthly-spend ceilings are separate from the number of jobs that may run simultaneously. All video-generation models share the video concurrency limit, so parallel Gen-4.5 and Aleph traffic consumes the same project-level lane.

Tier Concurrent generations Generations per day Monthly spend limit
Tier 1 1 50 $100
Tier 2 3 500 $500
Tier 3 5 1,000 $2,000
Tier 4 10 5,000 $20,000

Runway says tier upgrades apply automatically when the required spend criteria are reached. Because the quotas are project-scoped, a second project is not a substitute for understanding which account and project your SDK credentials target. Build a queue that respects the concurrency value, count successful and failed submissions against your operational budget, and monitor both daily generations and monthly spend.

Output formats and post-production choices

Both models share three editorial delivery containers selected with the outputFormat field:

prores ProRes .mov Editorial workflows that need an intraframe master
png_sequence ZIP of individual PNG frames; a separate WAV is supplied when the output includes audio Compositing, frame-level processing, or custom encoding

The shared editorial containers are standard dynamic range. ProRes profiles listed for the service include 422 Proxy, 422 LT, 422, 422 HQ, 4444, and 4444 XQ. Selecting ProRes or a PNG sequence triggers the professional-output surcharge described above.

HDR availability

Gen-4.5 also offers native HDR outputs, including hdr10 and hlg, plus additional HDR ProRes, PNG-sequence, EXR-sequence, and 12-bit master options in the documentation. These choices are distinct from the default SDR MP4 delivery and can incur the 10-bit/HDR credit surcharge.

Aleph 2.0 supports sdr_rec709_10bit. Runway documents a separate /v1/video_to_hdr workflow for converting an Aleph edit to HDR rather than treating every Aleph render as natively HDR.

Which model should your application use?

Choose Gen-4.5 when you need a new shot

  • Start with a written concept and no source video.
  • Generate from text alone, or provide a still image to guide the animation.
  • Target the two text-to-video dimensions, or use the expanded image-to-video ratio list when a reference image is available.
  • Budget the lower base per-second rate shown in the pricing table, plus any selected format surcharge.

Choose Aleph 2.0 when you need an edit

  • Begin with a 2–30-second source clip at 30 FPS or below.
  • Keep the source at or below 1080p so the documented resolution-preservation behavior applies.
  • Describe the in-context change rather than asking for an unrelated new scene.
  • Use the separate HDR conversion workflow if the finished edit must be delivered in HDR.

Account for shared project headroom

A pipeline that mixes both models should reserve concurrency for the more expensive or time-sensitive operation. For example, a batch editor can queue Aleph jobs while allowing a separate lane for Gen-4.5 concept renders, but the combined number of active video jobs cannot exceed the project’s tier value.

Implementation checklist and common failure points

  1. Confirm the project. Verify that your Runway Dev credentials point to the intended project and that its tier has enough daily and monthly allowance.
  2. Validate the media locally. Check duration, frame rate, resolution, file size, MIME type, and byte length before uploading or publishing a URL.
  3. Use a direct HTTPS asset URL. Ensure the host returns Content-Type and Content-Length, does not redirect, and keeps the URL valid for the entire job.
  4. Select the correct model ID. Send gen4.5 for generation or image animation and aleph2 for an edit based on an existing video.
  5. Set a supported ratio. Text-only Gen-4.5 requests are limited to 1280×720 or 720×1280; image-to-video has the additional documented dimensions.
  6. Choose delivery before rendering. Leave outputFormat at mp4 for the default H.264 result, or select ProRes/PNG when your post-production pipeline justifies the extra credits.
  7. Throttle submissions. Queue requests above the project’s concurrency limit and stop new work when the daily-generation or monthly-spend ceiling is reached.

If a Gen-4.5 text request is rejected because an image is missing, check that you have omitted promptImage; text-to-video does not require one. If an Aleph request fails validation, inspect the source clip against the 2–30-second, 30-FPS-or-lower, and 1080p-or-lower requirements before changing the prompt. If a remote asset cannot be fetched, test the URL without redirects and confirm the required headers.

Practical decision

Runway’s API is suitable for both automated shot creation and automated video editing, but they are different workflows. Build Gen-4.5 integrations around prompt-driven generation and ratio selection; build Aleph 2.0 integrations around validated source clips and in-context instructions. Treat output format, HDR requirements, and project quotas as part of the initial job design, not as post-processing details, because each can change delivery compatibility, credit usage, or whether the request is accepted.
