In RuneScape: Dragonwilds, start by learning how the Crafting Table and Journal work, then use each skill’s tree to see what your actions are unlocking. Gather resources, craft and repair equipment, prepare for danger, and explore Ashenfall at your own pace. The game supports solo play or groups of up to four, with cross-play across platforms according to Jagex’s launch announcement.
What should you do first in RuneScape: Dragonwilds?
Dragonwilds is a survival-and-crafting game set on Ashenfall, separate from the RuneScape MMORPG. Its progression links gathering, crafting, skills, equipment, potions, magic, exploration, and combat; Jagex does not prescribe one mandatory beginner route.

- Get access to a Crafting Table. Enter Build mode, choose the Basic Survival tab, and place the table. Interact with it to see what you can make and which resources each item requires.
- Check the Journal before gathering. Use its recipe reference to identify what you need, rather than collecting materials without a purpose.
- Open the Skills menu as you play. Select a skill to view its XP requirements and tree. Use the tree to understand which abilities, spells, traits, or buffs its levels can unlock.
- Prepare before pushing into danger. Treat equipment, potions, skills, and magic as parts of preparation for exploration and combat. Magic also has practical uses, including helping with resource gathering and crafting gear or shelters.
- Keep equipment in working order. Tools and other items wear down and eventually break. Use the Crafting Table’s Repair mode to restore worn equipment.
This is a flexible survival loop, not a fixed sequence: gather and craft, build skills through relevant actions, check unlocks, prepare, and then explore.

Jagex’s guidance does not establish a recommended beginner level for specific regions or a universally best skill order.
How do you craft and repair tools?
Crafting from the table
Use Build mode to place a Crafting Table from the Basic Survival tab, then interact with it. The crafting interface shows resources you own and the requirements for items. The Journal is useful for reviewing recipes while planning what to collect.

Repairing worn equipment
Items and tools lose durability with use and can eventually break. At the Crafting Table, switch to Repair mode to restore them. Make repair part of your preparation for exploration so a worn tool does not catch you unready.

Jagex frames skills, prepared potions, crafted gear, and spells as support for travelling through dangerous regions and facing the Dragon Queen. Build readiness through the systems you have available rather than relying on an assumed power threshold: the official guidance does not specify exact region gates, recommended skill levels, or a single optimal build.

- Inspired by the record-breaking online universe that’s captured the imagination of millions worldwide, RuneScape Kingdoms: Shadow of Elvarg is the official cooperative board game for 1-5 players.
Agility can also matter for traversal. In its 29 July 2026 Update 0.12.1 announcement, Jagex described six fixed-route Agility courses with leaderboards, passive XP while running, a horizontal dash added to double-jumping, breakfall for non-fatal falls, and discoverable Kebbit Burrows that provide shortcuts. The announcement also says higher Agility reduces sprint stamina use and increases carrying capacity.
