A suddenly loud, roaring exhaust—especially at startup or when you accelerate—can be a sign that your catalytic converter has been stolen. If you can safely see underneath the vehicle, a gap in the exhaust or cut, disturbed piping is a stronger clue. Neither noise nor rough running proves theft on its own, so report suspected theft and arrange a professional inspection.
Signs your catalytic converter may be missing
A sudden roar or rumble
Listen for an abrupt change when starting the engine: the exhaust may rumble or roar much louder than usual, and the sound can grow louder as you accelerate. Irvine Police Department describes this as a common sign when a converter is missing. Irvine Police Department guidance and Delaware State Police guidance also describe this kind of noise.

A gap or cut in the exhaust
If you can see the underside from a safe position, look for an open gap where the converter would normally connect sections of the exhaust, or piping that appears cut or disturbed. This is a more direct clue than sound alone. Do not crawl under a vehicle supported only by a jack; if you cannot inspect it safely, have a qualified repair professional check it.
Rough or sputtering driving
Delaware State Police also lists rougher running or sputtering while changing speed as a possible sign. But exhaust damage and other vehicle faults can cause similar symptoms, so drivability changes are not confirmation by themselves.

Symptoms that do not confirm theft
A smell, warning light, or loss of power may accompany vehicle problems, but the official sources cited here do not establish any of them as a necessary or specific sign that a converter was stolen. Do not rely on one of these symptoms to diagnose theft.
What to do if you suspect theft
If the theft is happening now
Do not approach or confront the people involved. Move to safety and contact local emergency services to report a crime in progress. The appropriate emergency number depends on your country or region; Police.uk’s guidance likewise advises reporting an active theft and not approaching suspects.

If you discover the theft afterward
- Stay clear of the underside. Photograph visible damage from a safe position if you can.
- Report it to local law enforcement. Use the local non-emergency reporting route unless there is an immediate danger or crime in progress.
- Contact your insurer. Ask whether your specific policy covers the stolen part and related damage; coverage is not guaranteed.
- Arrange an inspection. Ask a trusted mechanic to inspect the exhaust system and other affected components before a replacement is installed.
Decide whether it is safe to drive
If you are unsure whether the vehicle can be operated safely, do not drive it; contact a repair facility or roadside assistance. DuPont Registry’s guidance also advises against driving when you are unsure the vehicle is safe to operate.
Replacement rules depend on where you live
Do not choose a replacement based only on whether it physically fits. Emissions requirements vary by jurisdiction and vehicle. In California, the Bureau of Automotive Repair says a replacement must meet the exact requirements for that vehicle and recommends consulting a licensed Smog Check station. The replacement may need to be an OEM converter or a CARB-approved aftermarket converter with an Executive Order number applicable to the exact vehicle. See California BAR’s catalytic converter guidance. Other jurisdictions have their own rules; do not assume California requirements apply elsewhere.

Reducing the risk after repair
Official guidance identifies several possible deterrents, but none guarantees that theft will be prevented. Ask your vehicle manufacturer or a qualified installer what suits your vehicle and will not interfere with the exhaust system.
- Parking: Use a garage or secure, well-lit parking when available.
- Alarms: Consider a vibration-sensitive alarm that can alert you to tampering.
- Identification: VIN or license-plate marking may help identify a recovered converter.
- Shields or cages: A vehicle-compatible catalytic converter shield or cage may make access more difficult. Confirm fit and installation with a qualified shop.
In California, BAR cautions that a prevention device must not damage or modify the converter or conceal required identification, and recommends installation by a licensed shop. Its guidance on replacement and prevention is available from California BAR and CARB’s aftermarket catalyst program.
