There is no distinct released game officially named “RuneScape 4” established by the Jagex sources reviewed. If you are weighing “RS4” against “RS3,” the useful comparison is Jagex’s current RuneScape—often called RS3 by players—versus Old School RuneScape (OSRS). You can access both through one RuneScape account, but your character progress is separate: an existing RuneScape character does not carry its stats or items into Old School.
What “RuneScape 4” means—and what to compare instead
Jagex’s official product and support pages use the names RuneScape and Old School RuneScape. “RS3” is common player shorthand for the current mainline game; the official support label is simply “RuneScape.” Jagex’s Reignited material describes a restored and remastered RuneScape experience, but does not identify it as a separate product called RuneScape 4. Its news index does not substantiate a released game by that name either. See Jagex’s RuneScape and Old School, RuneScape Reignited, and news.

So the practical question behind “Should I play OSRS or RS3?” is whether you prefer Old School’s retro identity and player-voted major changes, or RuneScape’s current restoration direction and modernised systems. Those are different approaches, not evidence that one game is objectively better.
Will your account and progress transfer?
One RuneScape account provides access to both games, but it does not create one shared character. Jagex says Old School requires a new character; character information, stats, and items do not transfer between the two. Your existing RuneScape profile and its items remain in RuneScape.

- Grab your capes and party hats, because we’re going to Gielinor!
- Inspired by the record-breaking online universe that’s captured the imagination of millions worldwide, RuneScape Kingdoms: Shadow of Elvarg is the official cooperative board game for 1-5 players.
That makes the restart the first decision for returning players: if the appeal is keeping the character they already built, continue in RuneScape; if starting over sounds enjoyable, Old School is an option without giving up the original profile. The account-access information does not establish that every membership or billing condition is identical, so check the current terms shown for your account before paying.
How the two games approach change
Old School RuneScape: a retro starting point that keeps evolving
Old School launched in 2013 from a 2007 backup. Jagex says it has since become something new rather than remaining a frozen copy. The game retains a retro identity, while major changes are subject to player voting. That gives players a formal say in significant proposals, but does not mean every update is decided by a vote. Jagex describes the game and its voting approach on its RuneScape page.

RuneScape: a restoration and modernisation direction
Jagex’s Reignited presentation describes a remastered journey with restored systems and interface elements, modernised combat, rebuilt systems, and officially supported integrated plugins. It also points to further story chapters in 2027. These are descriptions of RuneScape’s current direction, not a promise that every system or update will follow the same approach. The details are live-service information and may change; consult Jagex’s current Reignited page for the latest presentation.
Jagex’s January 2026 RS25 announcement also described an integrity-focused roadmap and RuneScape’s 25th year. Together, these official updates show that the mainline game is being actively reshaped, so comparisons based only on an older impression of RS3 may miss its current direction. Jagex’s RS25 announcement provides that dated context.

Choose by experience, not by a presumed winner
| What matters to you | RuneScape (often called RS3) | Old School RuneScape |
|---|---|---|
| Presentation and identity | Current mainline game with a remastered/restoration direction described by Jagex. | Retro-styled game that began from a 2007 backup and has continued to evolve. |
| How major change is framed | Jagex describes studio-led restoration and rebuilt systems shaped by player feedback. | Jagex says major changes are governed by player voting. |
| Progress from your existing character | Your existing RuneScape profile and items stay here. | Requires a new character; stats, items, and profile information do not transfer. |
| Combat and interface details | Jagex says combat is modernised and the interface and systems rebuilt; specific mechanical comparisons are not established by these descriptions. | Retro identity is established; the cited official descriptions do not provide a detailed mechanical comparison. |
The table is a decision aid, not a scorecard. If you want to preserve your current character, the separate profiles matter more than the games’ labels. If you are deciding on feel, consider whether the retro presentation and vote-governed major changes appeal more than RuneScape’s restoration and modernisation direction. The official descriptions do not support a blanket ranking of combat depth, balance, or overall quality.

Jagex publishes separate recommended specifications for RuneScape and Old School across PC, Mac, Android, and iOS. Look up the requirements for the specific game and device you plan to use rather than assuming that one game’s compatibility guarantees the other’s. Jagex also warns that Steam Deck is unsupported and may not offer full functionality. Check the current recommended specifications before installing.

Do player-count claims tell you which game is busier?
Not from the franchise-wide figure in Jagex’s January 2026 announcement. Jagex said the franchise had welcomed over 300 million player accounts; that is a cumulative account figure across the franchise, not a current active-player count or a breakdown between RuneScape and Old School. It cannot establish which game is busier now. The same announcement’s planned RuneFest 2026 capacity of 6,000 fans is an event figure, not a measure of either game’s population. Jagex did not provide a like-for-like active-player comparison in that announcement.

A practical way to make the choice
- Decide whether to keep playing your existing character. If retaining its progress is essential, stay with RuneScape; Old School starts a separate character.
- Pick the update approach that suits you. Old School puts major changes to player voting; RuneScape’s current messaging focuses on restoration, rebuilt systems, and modernisation.
- Check your device against the right game’s requirements. Use Jagex’s current specifications for your platform, and treat Steam Deck as unsupported.
- Try the choice that fits your preference, not an assumed “next version.” “RuneScape 4” is not substantiated here as an official released product, and neither game is established as the universal winner.
