A Jagex account is the account system; the Jagex Launcher is software for accessing games. Because no specific launch is identified here, check that release’s official announcement for any extra requirements rather than assuming a deadline, migration rule, or progress reset.
1. Identify your character, game and current login
Start by listing the character or characters you want to play and whether each is for RuneScape or Old School RuneScape (OSRS). Note whether you currently sign in with older RuneScape credentials or with a Jagex account. That distinction matters: upgrading an existing character replaces its old login details with Jagex account credentials.

A Jagex account can manage up to 50 characters, according to Jagex Support’s Jagex Accounts FAQ. If you have several characters, check which ones are associated with the account you intend to use before launch.

2. Secure the login email and recovery options
Confirm you can open the email address associated with your login, and secure that email account with two-step verification. Jagex account two-factor authentication is required by default through email codes; the account also supports a mobile authenticator app and backup codes. Save backup codes somewhere secure and separate from the device you use to sign in, so a lost or unavailable phone is not your only recovery path. Review Jagex’s current setup and recovery instructions before changing account settings.

3. Decide whether and when to upgrade to a Jagex account
Jagex says upgrading is currently optional: “For now, it’s entirely up to you whether you upgrade to a Jagex account or not.” The same FAQ says Jagex plans to make Jagex accounts mandatory in the future, but that is not a present requirement. Do not upgrade solely because an unnamed launch is assumed to require it.
If you choose to upgrade or link a character, follow the current steps in the Jagex Accounts FAQ and verify access to the login email first. The credential change is important: your former RuneScape login details are replaced by Jagex account credentials. Allow time to sign in and confirm the correct character appears before launch day.
4. Choose and test an access route
The launcher and the account are separate: the account holds login credentials and character management, while the Launcher is an application used to access Jagex games. Jagex’s current FAQ lists Launcher access for Windows and macOS and says a Linux Launcher Beta is possible. It also describes access to the official RuneScape and OSRS clients and RuneLite through the Launcher. Platform and client availability can change, so check the FAQ for your device rather than relying on an old setup guide.

If you play through Steam, Jagex says a character imported to a Jagex account can still be played through Steam. The FAQ says only one character can be linked per Steam account and recommends enabling Steam Guard. Check the current account instructions if Steam is part of your setup.

- Open the official Jagex account FAQ or the relevant official return page for your game and device.
- Download or update the official client or Launcher from the official page.
- Sign in with the credentials that apply to your character: Jagex account credentials if upgraded, or the existing login route otherwise.
- Confirm you can reach the intended character and game, and resolve any recovery or client issue before launch day.
5. Check OSRS-specific account protections
For OSRS, review your Bank PIN and Jagex’s security guidance. Jagex warns players about phishing links in emails and in-game messages. Do not sign in through an unexpected link; navigate directly to the official RuneScape site instead. These points are OSRS-specific advice and should not be mistaken for a launch requirement.
6. Recover access or return after a break
If you cannot sign in, use the official recovery route rather than repeatedly guessing credentials or following links sent in messages. The OSRS return page links to client downloads and account recovery. RuneScape players can use the RuneScape return page, which also points to a returning-player guide.
7. Verify the actual launch requirements
This title does not identify which game or release is launching. Once you know the launch, read its official announcement and check for any account, client, platform, migration or character-specific requirements. Do not infer a launch deadline, mandatory migration, compatibility guarantee or progress reset from general account guidance.
