To run compatible software from a pen drive, install the PortableApps.com Platform on the drive, open Start.exe from its root folder, then install and launch apps through the Platform menu. This keeps the app files on removable storage rather than requiring them to be installed on your PC’s internal drive—but it does not guarantee that every app keeps all of its data off the PC.
What you need before installing PortableApps
- A Windows PC with permission to download and run the installer.
- A USB flash drive or other portable storage device with enough room for the Platform, the apps you choose, and their files. PortableApps.com does not specify a universal capacity or speed requirement.
- An internet connection to download the Platform and apps.
PortableApps.com supports USB drives as well as other storage locations, including local drives and synced cloud folders. A USB drive is useful when you want to carry the apps between PCs. A synced folder depends on the relevant cloud service and network access to sync changes; the official guidance does not provide a speed, durability, or cost ranking among storage options. PortableApps.com’s explanation of portable apps describes the supported storage choices.

Install the PortableApps.com Platform on a pen drive
- Download the Platform installer from the PortableApps.com website and run it.
- When prompted for an installation location, choose the root of the USB drive. The root is the drive itself, not a folder inside it. PortableApps.com recommends this location for the Platform.
- After installation, open the USB drive in File Explorer and double-click
Start.exein the root. PortableApps.com’s Platform Support guide gives this as the way to start the Platform.
The Platform menu is the launcher for the apps installed on the drive. If Windows asks for permission to run the installer or an app, follow your organization’s policies; running software from USB does not bypass a computer’s security restrictions.

Add apps and launch them from the drive
Install from the built-in app catalog
- Open the PortableApps.com Platform menu.
- Select Apps > Get More Apps.
- Choose the apps you want and complete the installation. The Platform installs them into its portable-app environment on the drive.
- Return to the menu and select an installed app to launch it.
Install a downloaded PortableApps.com app
If you already downloaded an installer in PortableApps.com Format, identified by the .paf.exe extension, open the menu and select Apps > Install a New App. Choose the installer and complete the prompts. PortableApps.com documents both installation routes in its Platform Support guide and Portable App Support instructions.

Some supported apps can also be started without opening the Platform menu: open the app’s installed folder on the USB drive and run its executable. Use the menu when possible, since it provides the normal way to find and launch apps installed through the Platform.
Will portable apps free up space on your PC?
Keeping the Platform and app files on a USB drive can keep those files off your PC’s internal storage. That may help when you want to avoid installing the app files on a particular computer, but there is no universal space-saved figure: the amount depends on which apps and files you store on the drive.

“Portable” is not a guarantee that an app never writes to the host PC. PortableApps.com says its format is designed for portability, while warning that other programs described as portable may leave data on the local computer or behave differently when moved between PCs. Some apps may also have portability limitations. Check the app provider’s guidance if you need to know what it stores locally. PortableApps.com’s definition of a portable app explains this distinction.

- Save your work and close every app launched from the drive.
- Exit the PortableApps.com Platform.
- Wait until the USB drive’s activity light stops flashing, or until drive activity otherwise stops. PortableApps.com advises waiting before removal.
- Use the Platform’s eject control or Windows’ safe-removal option, then unplug the drive after it is ready to remove.
Unplugging while an app is open or the drive is writing can corrupt app files or lose data. PortableApps.com also warns that shutting down while an app remains open can prevent settings from saving or local data from being cleaned up. See its safe portable-app guidance.

Back up the files you care about
For apps in PortableApps.com Format, the Platform’s app-data-only backup feature can help protect app settings and data. It does not back up data for apps outside that format. If you use other software or keep documents on the drive, back up the whole drive or those files separately. The Platform Support guide explains the backup limitation.

- Open
Start.exefrom the drive’s root on the other Windows PC and launch apps from the menu. - Do not assume every app will work identically on every computer. Compatibility and portability can vary by app, and the computer’s security policy may restrict execution from removable media.
- Close apps and safely eject the drive before moving it back to the first PC. If you use a synced cloud folder instead of a USB drive, allow the service to sync changes before opening the same files elsewhere.
PortableApps.com describes the Platform and app options in its Platform features overview. Check the provider’s instructions for any app whose portability or cross-PC behavior matters to you.
