Yes—an asynchronous app can use AWS Lambda without a Lambda charge while eligible monthly usage stays within AWS’s listed allowance: 1 million requests and 400,000 GB-seconds per month. That does not guarantee a zero bill for the whole app. Connected services, usage beyond allowances, and account-plan terms can add costs. The best fit is work that starts from an event and finishes within Lambda’s execution limits, rather than a server that must run continuously.
Which async apps fit Lambda?
Lambda runs code in response to invocations rather than keeping a server process running between requests. It can suit bounded tasks triggered by services such as Amazon S3, Amazon SNS, Amazon EventBridge, Step Functions, or CloudWatch Logs. AWS counts asynchronous events as Lambda requests, so each event contributes to request usage.

This model works for tasks that can start, do their work, and finish within the function’s limits. It is a poor fit for a worker that must stay alive indefinitely or a job that cannot be divided into shorter invocations. Lambda does not by itself provide a durable job queue, database, static-site hosting, or a custom domain; those needs require other services, whose costs must be considered separately.
Check execution and payload limits first
- Execution time: A standard Lambda function can run for up to 900 seconds (15 minutes). A longer task needs a different design, such as splitting work into steps or choosing another compute service.
- Payload size: AWS documents a 1 MB limit for asynchronous invocation payloads, and 6 MB each for synchronous requests and responses. These are service quotas, not performance guarantees.
- Memory and CPU: Configurable memory ranges from 128 MB to 10,240 MB. AWS allocates CPU in proportion to memory, so memory selection can affect both runtime and cost.
- Deployment package: Direct API or console uploads allow packages up to 50 MB zipped and 250 MB unzipped, including layers and custom runtimes. Larger upload packages can use S3. Container-image packages have a separate maximum uncompressed size of 10 GB.
These documented limits are published in the AWS Lambda quotas documentation.

Choose how the app receives HTTP requests
If the app needs a basic public HTTP or HTTPS endpoint, start with a Lambda Function URL. AWS describes these as a simple, direct HTTP endpoint for a Lambda function. Function URLs follow standard Lambda pricing and have no additional charge for the URL endpoint itself; invocations and any other services the app uses can still incur charges.
Use API Gateway when the app needs API-management features such as request throttling, stage management, API keys, documentation, WebSocket APIs, private APIs, or WAF integration. It offers more controls than a direct Function URL, but its own pricing belongs in the cost estimate. AWS describes an API Gateway free tier, but check the current pricing page for eligibility and terms rather than assuming it covers a particular deployment.
| Choice | Best fit | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| Lambda Function URL | A straightforward HTTP endpoint where direct access, built-in CORS, and basic monitoring are enough. | No separate endpoint charge; Lambda usage and connected-service charges still apply. |
| API Gateway | An API needing management controls or capabilities such as throttling, stages, API keys, or WebSockets. | Include API Gateway pricing as well as Lambda and connected-service costs; verify current free-tier terms. |
See AWS’s Function URL documentation and comparison of Function URLs and API Gateway to select a front door based on required features.

What “free Lambda” covers—and what it does not
AWS’s Lambda pricing page lists a monthly allowance of 1 million requests and 400,000 GB-seconds for Lambda Functions. AWS prices requests and execution duration separately; memory allocation affects compute resources and duration pricing. The free allowance applies to eligible Lambda usage, not automatically to every component of an application.
For larger asynchronous events, AWS’s pricing page says events above 256 KB incur additional request counts in 64 KB chunks up to 1 MB. Check the live AWS Lambda pricing page for current rates and details.
The total bill can include services used alongside Lambda, such as an API front door, storage, queues, databases, logs, or data transfer. It can also change if usage exceeds allowances. AWS distinguishes account plans and offer terms; paid-plan users pay standard rates for eligible usage beyond credits or after credits expire. Check the AWS Free Tier page and your account’s billing terms before relying on an allowance. Free offers and plan rules can change.

Estimate the bill before deploying
There is no reliable app-wide price without the workload and architecture details. Estimate with your AWS Region, expected event and HTTP request volume, memory allocation, average execution duration, payload sizes, and every connected service. Then compare the estimate with the live pricing pages and the actual account plan.

Remember that asynchronous events count as Lambda requests.
- Estimate function usage: For each function, identify the memory setting and expected execution duration. Compare request count and compute duration with the monthly Lambda allowance.
- Add the front door and dependencies: Include API Gateway if used, plus storage, queues, databases, logging, networking, and any other services the design requires.
- Check account terms and monitor usage: Confirm which offers or credits apply to the account, then use AWS billing and usage tools to track actual charges after deployment.
A low-traffic app made of short, bounded invocations may remain within Lambda’s monthly allowance. Whether the complete app costs nothing depends on its supporting services, usage, Region, and account terms—not just on choosing Lambda.
