1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe RTX 5090 uses the 16-pin 12V-2×6 connector, an updated successor to 12VHPWR. MSI says both connectors have the same maximum power output, while 12V-2×6 improves insertion detection. A 12VHPWR cable may be compatible at the connector, but a modular PSU cable must also be approved for your exact power-supply model. Whichever connection route you use, NVIDIA says the plug must be fully inserted and seated flush.
What is 12V-2×6, and what changed from 12VHPWR?
12V-2×6 is the revised 16-pin (12+4) GPU power connector associated with the RTX 5090 generation. It succeeds 12VHPWR, the earlier connector version. MSI describes the two connectors as having the same maximum power output and says 12V-2×6 improves insertion detection; the revision does not mean the connector has a higher power ceiling.

The standards record includes two distinct events. PCI-SIG lists “12V-2×6 Connector Updates to PCIe Base 6.0” dated August 31, 2023. Separately, a PCI-SIG notice dated January 10, 2023, says the existing 12VHPWR cable-plug drawings were replaced with two options. These should not be conflated as one change. The public listing does not expose the full normative text of the connector update, so exact pin-length differences or millimeter measurements cannot be established from it.
NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 product page and Founders Edition guide explain power requirements and installation, but do not themselves name the card’s receptacle “12V-2×6.” The connector identification and comparison come from MSI’s technical explanation. #1 Best Overall
- Over Temperature Protection (OTP) – The cable features built-in hardware to monitor for extreme temperatures and will shut off power to the GPU if a threshold is exceeded, which prevents damage to the GPU and the cable
- Dual-Tone 12V-2x6 Connector – The cable features grey endpoints where the shaded section vanishes when the connector is fully inserted, giving visual confirmation of a secure connection
- Compatible with Most Modern PSUs – The cable works with any power supply with a native 12V-2x6 connection
- Flexible Debossed Cables – The cables feature a flexible debossed design that allows for easy and precise cable routing while giving your build a professional look
- Stealth OTP Sensor – The Over Temperature Protection (OTP) monitor is incorporated into the cable with a stealth design that is clean and unobtrusive
Can you use a 12VHPWR cable with an RTX 5090?
MSI says 12VHPWR cables and connectors are downward compatible with 12V-2×6 at the connector level. That does not establish that any modular cable with a 12VHPWR label will work with any PSU. Modular PSU-side pinouts can vary, so confirm that the specific cable is manufacturer-approved for your exact power-supply model before connecting it.
For NVIDIA’s direct-cable RTX 5090 option, the product page specifies one PCIe Gen 5 power cable rated for 450W or greater. Check the cable rating and the PSU manufacturer’s compatibility information; the card-side plug shape alone is not enough to verify a safe match. NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 product page.

Direct cable or adapter: which connection should you use?
The right route depends on your exact card, PSU, available cables, and how easily the connector can be fully seated in your case. NVIDIA’s product page lists both a multi-8-pin adapter option and a direct PCIe Gen 5 cable option. Its Founders Edition guide gives more specific instructions for that model, so follow the documentation for the card you own rather than applying Founders Edition requirements to every RTX 5090.
| Connection route | What to verify | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Direct PSU cable | The cable is approved for the exact PSU model and is a PCIe Gen 5 power cable rated 450W or greater for NVIDIA’s listed direct-cable option. | Connector-level compatibility does not prove modular PSU-side compatibility. |
| GPU adapter | Use the adapter requirements and number of independent PCIe 8-pin leads specified in the guide for your exact card. | NVIDIA’s product page and Founders Edition guide describe different adapter wording and cable counts; the guide’s instructions below apply specifically to the Founders Edition. |
For the GeForce RTX 5090 Founders Edition, NVIDIA says to use only the included NVIDIA power connector adapter and connect at least four independent, dedicated 8-pin PCIe cables from the PSU to that adapter. The guide recommends connecting the adapter to the graphics card first, then installing the card. For a partner card, consult that manufacturer’s instructions instead. Does an RTX 5090 require an 850W power supply?
NVIDIA lists an 850W minimum system power supply for the RTX 5090 and notes that a higher rating may be needed depending on the system configuration. This is the product-page minimum, not a guarantee that every system will be adequately powered by an 850W PSU. Consider the rest of your system and follow the requirements for your exact card and PSU.

- Check the power cable or adapter instructions for your exact GPU model. If using a direct modular PSU cable, verify the cable is approved for that PSU model.
- If you have a Founders Edition card, use the included NVIDIA adapter. The guide recommends connecting it to the graphics card before installing the card in the system.
- Insert the plug fully into the GPU receptacle. NVIDIA instructs Founders Edition owners to ensure it is “fully inserted and seated flush against the power receptacle.”
- Route the cable so it does not prevent the plug from sitting flush. Avoid a bend or sideways pull at the connector that interferes with full seating.
The revised connector’s improved insertion detection does not make incomplete seating safe or eliminate the need to follow installation guidance. NVIDIA’s full-seating instruction is in its RTX 5090 User Guide.
