How to Choose a Projector Screen Size and Throw Distance for Your Room

Calculate projector throw distance from image width and your model’s throw ratio, then verify screen size, offset and mounting geometry before installation.

To work out how far a projector should sit from your screen, first choose the screen’s aspect ratio and diagonal size, convert that diagonal to the image’s horizontal width, then multiply the width by the throw ratio listed for your exact projector and lens. For a zoom lens, calculate the minimum and maximum supported distances. Before mounting, check the model’s offset, lens shift, reference points and clearance requirements in its manual or manufacturer calculator.

How do you calculate projector throw distance?

Throw ratio is the distance from the projector’s lens to the screen divided by the image’s horizontal width. Rearranged, the calculation is:

Throw distance = image width × throw ratio

Sony Support states the relationship as “Width of screen x Lens throw ratio = Throw distance.” Use the throw ratio for the exact projector and lens—not a ratio from another model. The distance is measured from the lens reference point; the projector’s body depth and rear clearance affect where the unit can physically sit.

How far should a projector be from a 100-inch screen?

There is no single distance for every 100-inch screen. In these examples, 100 inches means the image’s diagonal, while the calculation needs its width and the projector’s throw ratio. A 100-inch diagonal 16:9 image is about 7.2 feet wide in BenQ’s example. At the example ratio of 1.13:1, that gives a throw distance of about 8.2 feet. This is a BenQ US example, not a universal placement rule.

  • 120 Inch Viewing Screen :Features 16:9 aspect ratio with a 120 inch diagonal, offering an expansive 104" x 58" viewing area

Sony’s separate worked example uses a 100-inch-wide image—not a 100-inch diagonal image—and a 1.39:1–2.23:1 zoom range for the VPL-FHZ75. The resulting supported throw-distance range is 139–223 inches (3.53–5.66 m). These two examples cannot be compared by distance alone: they use different image-width assumptions and projector specifications.

What size projector screen fits your room?

Start with the usable wall and where people will sit, rather than choosing the largest screen the wall can hold. Decide which aspect ratio suits your usual content and the available screen area; common formats in BenQ’s guide include 16:9, 4:3 and 2.35:1. A room that cannot accommodate a larger image may be better served by a smaller screen.

  • 1. 【Lightweight & Foldable 16:9 Screen】 Designed for casual indoor and outdoor use. This high-density polyester projection screen offers a wide viewing angle. It is incredibly lightweight and folds compactly to fit in your own backpack, making it the perfect budget-friendly choice for camping, backyard movie nights, or temporary setups.
  • 2. 【Important: Material & Best Environment】 To achieve extreme portability and a highly cost-effective design, this screen is made to be thin and lightweight. IT IS NOT a thick, heavy-duty professional home theater screen. For the best image quality, we highly recommend using it in completely dark environments or hanging it directly against a solid, opaque wall..
  • 3. 【Foldable Design & Crease Removal Guide】 Please note: The screen is shipped folded in basic packaging to minimize costs, so creases are normal upon arrival. To easily remove wrinkles, simply stretch the screen tightly using the included accessories for a few days, or iron it on the LOWEST heat setting with a damp cloth.
  • 4. 【What's Included & Wall Safety Warning】 Package includes: 1x Projector Screen, Ropes, Hooks, and Double-Sided Tapes for quick setup (NOTE: Stand, bracket, and carry bag are NOT included). WARNING: Only use the tape on completely smooth surfaces like glass or tile. For painted walls, strictly use ropes or nails to prevent the tape from damaging your wall paint.
  • 5. 【Budget-Friendly Casual Viewing】 Built for convenience and extreme value, this minimalist screen is the perfect entry-level accessory for casual family gatherings. If you are a professional cinephile looking for a premium, heavy, wrinkle-free fixed-frame screen with luxury packaging, this highly portable model might not fit your advanced needs.

Use viewing angle as a guide, not a rule

BenQ’s screen guide attributes a minimum 30-degree field of view to SMPTE and a 40-degree cinematic recommendation to THX. It also gives diagonal-based heuristics: viewing distance of 1.6 times the screen diagonal for standard viewing, or 1.2 times for cinematic viewing. Treat these as recommendations reported by BenQ, not universal medical or ergonomic standards; your preferred image size and seating arrangement may differ.

How to choose a screen size and calculate the placement

  1. Measure the room. Measure the usable screen wall and the maximum distance available between the screen and projector lens. Account for seating, doors, windows, the projector body, cables and any planned mount. Check the manual for the model’s precise lens-to-screen reference points.
  2. Choose the aspect ratio. Match it to the content you watch most and the screen area you can use. Formats discussed in BenQ’s guide include 16:9, 4:3 and 2.35:1.
  3. Pick a candidate diagonal. Make sure the image fits the wall and suits the intended viewing position; wall capacity alone does not determine a comfortable size.
  4. Convert diagonal to image width. Use the chosen aspect ratio. Do not insert the diagonal directly into the throw-distance formula. For a 100-inch diagonal 16:9 image, BenQ’s example gives an approximate width of 7.2 feet.
  5. Look up the exact projector’s throw ratio. For a fixed ratio, multiply image width by that ratio. For a zoom range, multiply the width by both the minimum and maximum ratios to find the supported distance interval.
  6. Check mounting geometry. Use the manufacturer’s model-specific table or calculator to confirm offset, lens shift, screen position and placement limits. Throw distance alone does not tell you where the image will land vertically.
  7. Verify before drilling or permanently mounting. Confirm the measurements and image geometry against the selected projector’s installation instructions.

Why the projector model changes the answer

Different projectors can place the same-sized image at different distances. A zoom lens gives a range of possible distances, while lens offset and shift affect how the image aligns with the screen. A short-throw model may suit a shallow room, but the label alone does not establish that it supports your chosen image size or installation: check the exact model’s specifications and placement table.

Manufacturer tables are model-specific, not interchangeable charts. For example, Epson’s EB-992F reference lists a 100-inch 16:9 image at a projection distance of 134–181 cm with a 23 cm offset. Its 150-inch entry lists 202–273 cm and a 35 cm offset. Those figures describe that model’s table, not projectors generally. Epson also notes that image size changes with distance and can vary with zoom factor, aspect ratio and other settings.

What to check before installing

  • Optical distance: Measure from the lens reference point specified by the manufacturer, not automatically from the projector’s back or front edge.
  • Zoom range: Treat the calculated minimum and maximum as the model’s supported interval, then verify the intended position in its calculator or manual.
  • Offset and lens shift: Confirm that the projector can place the image at the required screen height and alignment; throw ratio does not determine vertical position.
  • Physical clearances: Allow for the projector body, cables, mount and ventilation or other clearances specified by the manufacturer.
  • Screen and seat fit: Check the chosen diagonal and aspect ratio against the usable wall and actual seating position before fixing the screen or mount.
