If violence is happening now, or you believe someone is in immediate danger, move toward a safer place if you can and contact emergency services if that is the safest available option. You can ask for help making a plan whether you are staying, preparing to leave, or already separated; you do not have to decide about the relationship first.
What a safety plan can—and cannot—do
A safety plan is a set of options tailored to your circumstances, not a promise that violence can be prevented and not a test you have to pass. It can help you think through what to do during an escalation, how to reach support, and what may make day-to-day life safer. The National Domestic Violence Hotline says responsibility for abusive behavior belongs to the abusive partner; planning is about protecting yourself, not controlling their behavior.

There is no cannabis-specific safety protocol that can predict what a partner will do. Focus on actions you have observed—such as threats, force, or access to weapons—rather than assuming cannabis use alone explains or predicts violence.
How to notice patterns without treating cannabis as the cause
If it is safe to do so, consider noting when incidents occur and what happened: the partner’s use, threats or force, injuries or damage, whether weapons were accessible, whether children or others were present, and what helped you get to safety. A record is optional; do not keep one if your partner might discover it and that could put you at greater risk.

Think ahead about where to go and how to get help
- If safe, identify areas of the home with an exit and away from weapons. Think about where you could move if an argument escalates.
- Keep a phone accessible if doing so is safe, and consider which trusted person, local shelter, or other support you could contact.
- You might agree on a code word or signal with a trusted friend or neighbor. Be specific about what you want them to do if they receive it.
Make a plan for children and other household members
Give children age-appropriate directions for reaching a safer place or getting help. Do not ask them to intervene, protect you, or place themselves between adults. If other household members are involved, consider what they can safely do without entering the conflict.

Notes or records of threats, injuries, or property damage may be useful to you, but only keep them if your partner cannot find them without increasing danger. If you are unsure, ask an advocate about safer options. Do not rely on whether cannabis was used as the sole measure of risk; consider the pattern and level of force you have experienced.

A phone is not automatically private: a device or communication channel may be monitored, discovered, or unsafe to carry. Do not assume that buying a new or prepaid phone will solve that problem. If you can, ask an advocate about a safer way to communicate.

- Children’s school or care arrangements
- Whether your mailing address needs more privacy
- Which trusted people should know when to seek help
An advocate can help tailor these choices to your situation rather than relying on a generic checklist.
How to support someone experiencing violence
Ask what the person wants and what would feel helpful. The National Domestic Violence Hotline recommends asking, “How can I help?” Respect their decisions, even if you would choose differently, and discuss possible consequences before taking action. Do not automatically contact police or confront the partner; the survivor may know that either action could increase risk.

- National Domestic Violence Hotline: Call 800-799-SAFE (7233). Phone and chat support are available 24/7. Advocates can help develop a plan around your circumstances.
- 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline: Call or text 988, or use online chat, for 24/7 support with mental-health, suicide, or substance-use crises. It is not a domestic-violence-specific safety-planning line.
- Immediate danger: 911 is commonly used in the United States, but whether contacting emergency services is the safest option depends on your circumstances and location.
Service availability and legal options vary by location. These resources can offer support, but they cannot replace an individualized assessment of your situation.
